AIBU to realise that if I "came into money" I would quite my job immediately and never work again?

Just that really. Has anyone else come to the realisation through lockdown that they would happily quit working for other people and never do paid work again?

I've only just realised this the last month or so. Before that I was always one of those obnoxious people who thought they'd keep working even if they won the big lottery "for something to do". Now 🤔...I've just had enough of it. A life time's worth. I'd quit for a paid off house and a tiny living at this point. To hell with holidays and consumer society.

Of course I won't...yet...but does anyone else just feel totally done?

YABU: Yay work! 🎉
YANBU: Totally done 🤨

No. I quit my job due to having to work from home. And went and got a job where I can actually go to work.

I have enough money to finish but what the fuck would I do?

Amberfest · 16/07/2020 20:37

YANBU. Work would not see me for dust.

Totally agree with a PP about team bonding and Zoom (or in our case Teams) calls and our manager's insistence on both - with your camera on so you can contemplate your double chins and the strange sticky up bit of hair on your crown and everyone fake gushing enthusiastically.

Wanky bollocks, I'd love to just walk away.

Amberfest · 16/07/2020 20:39

And just to add, I do currently work from home and did BC, but I just want to be left alone to do the damn work.

There are a million better ways to spend my time.

Lostinengland · 16/07/2020 20:42

@Turnedouttoes

I always used to be one of these people too and was adamant I’d work as long as I could but since lockdown I utterly hate the drudgery of it. I see all these people on furlough while I’m sat inside at a laptop all day every day and think about all the things I could be doing instead.

DP earns plenty and he loves his job and would never leave it so as long as the winnings allowed me to do all the things I’d want to during the week, I’d be very happy!

I would maybe do something I’m passionate about though, something like party planning or organising little events for people. Not for the money, just that I’d love it!

You see this just shows it takes all sorts, I would pay good money to have great dinner parties and bigger parties that I didn’t have to organise! Not fancy Kardashian-style ones - just be able to have ten friends round, fed delicious food that I didn’t have to make or clear up! Music, table settings everything organised for me.
ShirleyPhallus · 16/07/2020 20:45

Pre baby I was all “I love my job! I don’t want to just be someone’s mummy, I’ll definitely be back ASAP”

Now I’m like “the miracle of life is such a wonderous joy, behold my perfect child and let me be pregnant again immediately so I can dedicate my life to bring up these divine beings”

Wannabefarmer · 16/07/2020 20:46

@edwinbear

I’d too would be out like a shot. Then spend my days on exotic holidays and shagging unsuitable men who only wanted me for my money. I’d be absolutely fine with that.
Fucking same
MulticolourMophead · 16/07/2020 20:46

I would quit if I had the money. I'm currently working on going to university next year, which wouold be much simpler if I did't need to work while studying.

ShirleyPhallus · 16/07/2020 20:49

@Turnedouttoes as someone who used to do party planning, let me assure you it sounds wonderful but it’s a pretty crap job. Totally thankless, long hours, hard work and pretty tight budgets. Keep it as something you’d like to do but never make the switch to actually do it!

FizzyPink · 16/07/2020 20:51

Good to know @ShirleyPhallus Perhaps I’d stick to just planning my own parties with all my millions then Grin

Potatobug · 16/07/2020 20:52

If I could, I would never work again. I would travel the world, learn new tricks, just have fun.
I can easily spend a day just watching films, listening to music, googling random stuff, cooking, looking out of my head, staring into space, lazing about like a bad cat. The most important things in life.

If you have millions in the bank what motivates you to go out like a hapless slave and waste your day working for someone else?

ssd · 16/07/2020 20:53

I agree.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 16/07/2020 20:56

Structure and routine Blush

SimonJT · 16/07/2020 21:00

I need the structure and routine, I also couldn’t start my own business as I would be absolutely crap at it.

RedRumTheHorse · 16/07/2020 21:01

All those people planning to be freelance or run a business like a cafe are setting themselves up for much more work than their 9-5.30 job.

I ran a business and was freelance recently but even though I'm lazy between projects you have to answer your phone at any random time as anyone can give you the right work.

I do have to admit I did enjoy basically telling one guy I was doing work for where to go. It oddly has been the best decision I've made as I ended up in an interesting niche area.

Musmerian · 16/07/2020 21:01

@IwishIhadaMargarita - that’s pretty sweeping. I’m a teacher I live my job and I wouldn’t quit. It’s a meaningful and interesting thing to do.

PicsInRed · 16/07/2020 21:02

Structure and routine

...might be 🤣

The good old cows do make their way faithfully to the milking shed at 5 each and every morning 🤔

WhoWants2Know · 16/07/2020 21:03

My work is only partly about the money, so I might well continue doing it in some form even if I didn't need to. Actually, if I came into a fortune I would likely pour some of the money into developing the projects that I care about most. Even when my basic needs for food, shelter and security are met, I think I would feel hollow unless I was continuing to learn and develop and try to leave the world better than I found it.

Gillian1980 · 16/07/2020 21:06

I’d be gone!
I really like my job but if I was rich I would rather lead a life of leisure.

BikeRunSki · 16/07/2020 21:07

I like my job, but have struggled with it and homeschooling through lockdown. I’m exhausted, and have realised that actually, even if the dc ever go back to school, I’d happily never work again.Plenty to keep me occupied.

Northernsoullover · 16/07/2020 21:09

I would do a sociology degree. I love the subject but I'm studying something more vocational. After that I'd take painting classes, and pottery classes.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 16/07/2020 21:10

The good old cows .....

And I'm one of 'em. Happy life though. Got everything I need. And nothing I don't Blush

Stripeytopgirl · 16/07/2020 21:20

100%. & i’d give them the finger on the way out 👋🏾🖕🏾

Russellbrandshair · 16/07/2020 21:26

I love these responses. I was half expecting someone to come on and piously suggest that if you come into any money at all you should gift it ALL to a homeless person. That’s what they would do because they are morally superior 😆

MissMogwai · 16/07/2020 21:29

YANBU I'd be off if I won the lottery 😂
"Keep my mug and the biscuits in the drawer to remember me by"

That said, I do like my colleagues so I'd definitely take them for a drink or two.

I'd go back to university and do a Masters or something. Then I'd swan about being a lady of leisure the rest of the time. 🥂

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 16/07/2020 21:34

Absolutely. I can't understand people who say they would be bored if they didn't work. I could think of plenty of things to fill my days. I would absolutely love it.
