AIBU to realise that if I "came into money" I would quite my job immediately and never work again?

Just that really. Has anyone else come to the realisation through lockdown that they would happily quit working for other people and never do paid work again?

I've only just realised this the last month or so. Before that I was always one of those obnoxious people who thought they'd keep working even if they won the big lottery "for something to do". Now 🤔...I've just had enough of it. A life time's worth. I'd quit for a paid off house and a tiny living at this point. To hell with holidays and consumer society.

Of course I won't...yet...but does anyone else just feel totally done?

YABU: Yay work! 🎉
YANBU: Totally done 🤨

I would skip out

Russellbrandshair · 16/07/2020 18:35

YANBU. I will NEVER understand people who say "I'd be soooo bored!". Really? you literally cant think of anything to do other than go to the office?!
With a ton of money you could set up a charity, you could travel, you could help disadvantaged people, you could volunteer, you could take up great hobbies- whatever you fancy, you could go out for meals, cinema, read, rescue some animals, you could buy a boat and sail away into the sunset, you could get a home gym and get super fit, you could buy a holiday home and flit between the two. The things you could do are endless. I guess some people have very tiny imaginations 🤷🏼‍♀️

I would be out like a shot

Mumtumwobble · 16/07/2020 18:38

It would have to be a significant lottery win, but yes I’d quit and do some volunteer work most likely with vulnerable teenagers. I’m an experienced secondary teacher (Head of department) and I really like working with the kids, but lots of other aspects of my job I could easily live without. I wouldn’t want to just be in the house all day.

Lostinengland · 16/07/2020 18:38

If you think of the most privileged in society, up until about the Second World War it was considered slightly bizarre/uncouth to work.

Imagine being a lady in the thirties, a proper wealthy one. You literally would never in your whole life make a meal, clean a floor, wash, iron or hang up your own clothes, work for a living, run your own bath, pick up a towel, sort out a boring errand. Like constantly being at a five star hotel where the staff are there just for you. One of the books I read by an ex scullery maid (there was a spate of them towards the end of the 20thC) was one of 14 full time (ie 5am-10pm, 6.5 days a week) staff for a father and son.

CAN YOU IMAGINE YOUR LIFE?!?!

Livpool · 16/07/2020 18:39

Oh I wouldn't work my notice - I would pay them to cover me

KeepingPlain · 16/07/2020 18:39

I'd do charity work. But I wouldnt work for money.

I'd do more in my hobbies and take up other hobbies I currently can't afford and don't have the time for.

Wecandothis99 · 16/07/2020 18:40

I would buy a cafe or restaurant or bar that I could just own but have others manage it. But I wouldn't answer to ANY FUCKER ever again Smile

Jaxhog · 16/07/2020 18:42

Yep - it's called retirement.

ChewChewsBiscuitTin · 16/07/2020 18:43

I'd do my employers the courtesy of launching my laptop over the fence onto their premises from the window of of my newly acquired Bentley, but then I have always been too nice for my own good!

Bentley you say? Now that's a quality motor and would be the top of my list.
RedRumTheHorse · 16/07/2020 18:47

I would work but I like my work when I work for the right companies as I get to work remotely.

I would just employ lots of help so I would have time to do hobbies I enjoy which oddly includes charity work.

Tlollj · 16/07/2020 18:48

I would never work again.
Never go back just text my manager.
I would also never be bored.

Awww, I could certainly go for that life...the wealthy lady, not her scullery maid Grin

And if it was a euromillions sort of win. I wouldn’t ever do any house work, wouldn’t drive anywhere, would never wash another cup up.

JaJaDing · 16/07/2020 18:50

YANBU.

Money might not buy you happiness but it does buy you choices, and I know which choice I prefer out of seeing the fjords in Norway (preferably on a luxury boat) or sitting in rush hour traffic AGAIN!

Hyperion100 · 16/07/2020 18:51

100% with you. I'd quit in a heart beat, sell the house and travel until I couldnt travel anymore.

FizzyPink · 16/07/2020 18:58

I always used to be one of these people too and was adamant I’d work as long as I could but since lockdown I utterly hate the drudgery of it. I see all these people on furlough while I’m sat inside at a laptop all day every day and think about all the things I could be doing instead.

DP earns plenty and he loves his job and would never leave it so as long as the winnings allowed me to do all the things I’d want to during the week, I’d be very happy!

I would maybe do something I’m passionate about though, something like party planning or organising little events for people. Not for the money, just that I’d love it!

AnotherBiteMe · 16/07/2020 18:59

I would probably quit my job but I'd go back as a volunteer. I'd start a charity linked to my work and another one to help young single mums go back to college.

FinallyRelief · 16/07/2020 19:02

We can just about live off DH money and so this period of time has really helped me reflect and I've decided to go out on my own so I still want to do something and enjoy my job - just realised where I work and the people I work for are not my people - albeit I'll miss the socials - Xmas dos etc

I think my boss will understand but I'll deffo see it through for now - I might even be made redundant.

edwinbear · 16/07/2020 19:05

I’d too would be out like a shot. Then spend my days on exotic holidays and shagging unsuitable men who only wanted me for my money. I’d be absolutely fine with that.

LongPauseNoReply · 16/07/2020 19:05

I set up my business to basically run itself so it earns 24/7 with max 10 hours “work” a week. It means that I have the rest of the time free. It’s earned me a lot of money, I could retire now and never work again but I love what I do and would probably do it for free.

I’ve done it backwards Grin

DH doesn’t have to work (see above) but he does because he loves his job. I think that makes a difference in the decision.

YeahWhatevver · 16/07/2020 19:10

Now that the work/life balance has really hit new lows I've realised I don't enjoy my job one bit anymore.

It's been made harder by WFH but the salary and quality time has masked my distain for it.

Now the quality non work time has fucked off and my salary can't really be spent I've become aware that my work is a very negative part of my life.

I'd just need a sniff of and excuse and the financial means to drop it like a hot potato

ClashCityRocker · 16/07/2020 19:13

I've had to take a paycut during lockdown and it has made me realise that I can live quite comfortably on much less money than I currently earn. This has definitely become a factor in future planning. I feel like it's given me a chance to step away from the rat race and re analyse.

Now, if I won enough money to never work I suspect I'd be a perpetual student.

PicsInRed · 16/07/2020 19:17

Now the quality non work time has fucked off and my salary can't really be spent I've become aware that my work is a very negative part of my life.

You know, that's a huge part of it. And even the little bits of work which made it worth while, some friendly banter, a few laughs, a chat in the kitchen, Friday drinks, summer party, all gone.

Just various managers stressing over the WEINESS and what's apping you to Zoom about it as you sit in your house-office.

Hmm Grim.
