to not tell the neighbor about gas bbq

On Sunday I cooked a few sausages on a gas bbq. It wasn't on long. Was just one pack of sausages to have for lunch as it was a nice day. I have never noticed a lingering smell when I have used a gas one so didn't pay much thought.
My neighbor though shouted out while my 3 year old was in the garden -
A fucking bbq? would have been nice if you had said something, your fucking selfish! now my fucking washing stinks!
I've had no issues with her before shes always been chatty when passing outside. Lived here 3 years and both moved in at the same time. She smokes cannabis outside several times a day and I've never said anything but I find that stink more offensive.

If she says anything again maybe point out that her cannabis makes YOUR washing smell!

Shoxfordian · 16/07/2020 12:42

Ignore her

monotata · 16/07/2020 12:42

Oi oi hash head! Give me a heads up next time you have a sneaky joint!

Bargainhuntbore · 16/07/2020 12:48

Tell her to go fuck. Seriously.

I have PMT issues thik week😡

Birdy65 · 16/07/2020 13:02

She was completely unreasonable with the way she spoke.

However, it is quite selfish not to warn neighbours of any BBQ’s if they have washing out.

I think it’s good neighbour etiquette to let them know.

Porcupineinwaiting · 16/07/2020 13:18

She was rude. But round here neighbours warn each other of lunchtime bbqs if washing is out.

MsEllany · 16/07/2020 13:22

Why would you mention a gas bbq? They don’t smell like charcoal bbqs so what she was smelling was food, and unless you’re bbq is right next to her washing then she’s talking bollocks.

But yes, next time she smokes outdoors shout back to her.

NotShiny · 16/07/2020 13:26

You can smell gas bbq's and get smoke off them. Mh neighbour has one and I can smell smoke upstairs in bedrooms when she does it. Not as much as a normal one, but it still smokes, and sausages would need a good 20 mins at least? Think I'd have not done it if washing out next door to be honest, but her response was rude.

chellochello · 16/07/2020 13:30

You've got every right to have a BBQ in your own garden - a gas one would smoke a lot less than a charcoal one so shouldn't have any effect on her washing - I do normally give my neighbours a heads up it they have washing out and we're planning on a charcoal BBQ but I wouldn't not have the BBQ.

Jaxhog · 16/07/2020 13:31

YABU if she already had her washing out. That's just common courtesy.

But the swearing is also rude.

Beautiful3 · 16/07/2020 13:32

Our neighbours always tell us when they're putting their bbq on if they're using the bbq. It's just good manners.

Ohtherewearethen · 16/07/2020 13:33

If be tempted to use her words back at her. Next time she's smoking a joint outside, shout, "Fucking cannabis? Would have been nice if you had said something, you're fucking selfish! Now my fucking washing stinks!"

See how she responds to that.

NotShiny · 16/07/2020 13:35

Gas bbq's do still smoke, not as much as a charcoal one but they do.

MaxNormal · 16/07/2020 13:35

She has completely invalidated any point she might have had by speaking to you in that way. How dare she. Tell her to get fucked.

SoloMummy · 16/07/2020 14:13

She was rude, understandably irked, due to your discourteous behaviour.

BurtsBeesKnees · 16/07/2020 14:15

Ignore her, rude sod

Megan2018 · 16/07/2020 14:16

I’d be having bbq 3 times a day for the next 3 months and reporting her drug use.
You do not need permission for a bbq.

Bluntness100 · 16/07/2020 14:19

Oi oi hash head! Give me a heads up next time you have a sneaky joint!

This made me chuckle.

I’ve never known anyone warn their neighbours when having a bbq. Honestly mumsnet is like a parallel universe sometimes, where you can’t paint your side of the fence without asking and need to go knock on all your neighbours doors if you’re having a bbq. I assume disturbing them as they are working out how to make their chicken last a week and how to clean the loo without a loo brush,,,🤣

jessstan2 · 16/07/2020 14:20

You're not unreasonable, she is and foul mouthed with it. The smell of food cooking probably made her hungry and jealous.

contrmary · 16/07/2020 14:20

Shout back something like "Yeah, sometimes I'm a cunt when I've not had a shag in a long time too".

InTheWings · 16/07/2020 14:29

Sausages cooking on a BBQ make smoke with the fat dripping on to the flame whether it is gas or charcoal .

Gas doesn't cause the initial short smoke that charcoal does, but the cooking creates the same amount.

Sounds like she was having a bad day. Interruption to cannabis supply, maybe.

I would ask a neighbour to stop smoking near my fence and windows if I could smell the smoke.

MaxNormal · 16/07/2020 14:30

My neighbours light barbeques quite frequently when we have infrequent warm sunny days.
I cannot picture a universe whereby I then swear at them over the fence.
