Smashed makeup from Ebay (pictures)

I ordered a Tarte eyeshadow palette from eBay. It was a good price but still a "treat" for me to get. Condition and photos described it as new.

It has arrived but one of the eyeshadows is completely smashed. It's over the other colours and messy when I opened it. It was well packed and in a hard shell, so I can only think it was broken before I got it.

AIBU to complain? I was so looking forward to getting it.

I just checked the original ad and it says "no returns"...

She doesn't look like a business.

How many did the seller have for sale? I'm really wary of buying make-up from eBay as there are so many fakes, sometimes if it sounds too good to be true it usually is. Can you Google images of the name of your pallette and compare? Where was it posted from? If you don't want to accept three pounds refund I don't think you are BU, as you said it's a nice treat. I'd be gutted. If you buy from beauty bay, revolution etc they tend to be really good about sending a replacement

Pollypocket89 · 16/07/2020 12:29

They can type no returns but its meaningless as ebay side with the buyer in the product arrived faulty or not as described

Bella444 · 16/07/2020 12:30

@MinnieJackson I'm sure it's real and she only had the one.

Sigh ... lesson learnt I think.

@Pollypocket89 thank you for that info.

When you say “inside its box”, do you mean there was the Perspex box of eyeshadow (of which you’ve sent a picture) and then that was in a cardboard box And then she bubble wrapped the cardboard box? I’m trying to assess how robust and protective her wrapping was for the kind of product it is.

Honestly, eyeshadows are so fragile and mail handlers often very rough. I received a bundle of baby clothes in a cardboard box from
Ebay and it was half open with the clothes about to spill out - rough mail handling. But the seller could have secured the box better with better applied tape and more of it!

Bella444 · 16/07/2020 12:40

@Piglet89 yes, plastic case which holds the shadows, then the original cardboard box, then bubble wrap and then soft plastic envelope.

I really would have thought it would have been protection enough if the shadow had been fine to begin with? But I may be wrong!

OP posts:
Piglet89 · 16/07/2020 12:43

No I’m not sure you can assume that. Was there much of a gap between Perspex box and cardboard box? Is there room for the former to be bashed around inside the latter?

Bella444 · 16/07/2020 12:44

@Piglet89

No it's a tight fitting box designed for the compact.

I have emailed the seller to see if I can send it back.

I would say that's been damaged during delivery (I assume you saw photos of it when you purchased it and it was all in tack?). Did the seller write "fragile" on the outer packaging (I would have). If the seller had sent it special delivery they would have been insured for damage and could put in a claim on that otherwise I think you should write it off as a delivery incident. It's only one colour that's damaged, the rest are fine.

Bella444 · 16/07/2020 12:46

I heard from the seller. They are happy for me to send it back and they will give me a refund Smile.

Perils of buying from ebay.

That's good news, most eBay sellers are reasonable people ( though admittedly some aren't)

What I would do next is, Wrap the item really well, if possible put some polar bear poo packing around it as well as the bubble wrap as I find this protects things better from dropping and bashing, but take pictures of it before you do, take another picture to show your excellent wrapping and the sellers address clearly marked , then make sure you get a proof of postage from the post office. Email seller to say it is on its way.

NewnameOldposter · 16/07/2020 13:09

@viques
I've gotta ask:
if possible put some polar bear poo packing around it as well as the bubble wrap

Tried to Google it, but nothing showing up

Time40 · 16/07/2020 13:19

That seller's response is rubbish! You deserve a full refund - and Ebay will give you this. Tell the seller you want a full refund, and if she says No, open a complaint with Ebay for a damaged item. It's easy to do.

Bella444 · 16/07/2020 13:19

She's asked me to clean it and put the broken eyeshadow back into its base?? I've explained again that it's shattered (she has pis) but said I'll do my best!

Thanks for the advice everyone.

The seller might be able to claim it back from the delivery service which would help

Regularsizedrudy · 16/07/2020 13:33

I’d just mush the broken on back into the pan.. bit annoying but faffing around trying to get a refund would annoy me more

Bodgedboxdye · 16/07/2020 13:38

I’d raise it with eBay.

£3, when you paid £27. /: how rude.

You should get full refund through eBay.

Bodgedboxdye · 16/07/2020 13:40

Sorry.

Didn’t read all of thread. Hmm

Glad you’ve got it sorted. (:

EnterNight · 16/07/2020 13:42

Your seller needs to send you a return label. Please don't pay for return postage on this yourself.
Raise it with eBay.

And yes eBay and makeup is always a bad idea. Rat urine and arsenic being just two of the ingredients found in some fake eye shadow that was analysed a few years ago.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 16/07/2020 13:44

Bit late now but if you're willing to pay that much on ebay, then why not wait for a sale on tarte.com? I got some lovely goodies when they had 40% off.I have a 15% code if you'd like it?

Wexone · 16/07/2020 13:46

As someone who buys EBAY a lot, you need to check pictures here, was this part of the eye shadow in tact in the pictures. If so then I would guess it was damaged during postage, this can happen. Then it is up to you if you can accept it or not, what did you pay for it ? there are plenty of you tube videos to show you how to fix it, it is not completely unusable , you will just have to be careful when you use it and carry it. If it was me and I really loved it I would take her refund and keep it. Its up to you and how much you really want to have it

Those packing chips of polystyrene! We call it polar bear poo, though I expect real polar bear poo is much larger (and smellier and not pale green or cream)
