To hate washy covers of songs

powershowerforanhour · 15/07/2020 22:39

Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" in the Volvo ad
Proclaimers' (I'm Gonna Be) 500 miles -Viagra ad
On the radio- some shit version of Toploader's Dancing in the Moonlight

All sung in a wishy washy breathy pathetic style. Probably by the same person. Who sounds like they could barely blow out a candle.

Born to be Wild is associated with one of the most famous counterculture films ever.
500 miles should be sung near the end of a concert with a horde of drunk fans roaring the "Ba dah bah" line back
Even Dancing in the Moonlight was a nice bouncy summer tune till she got her pallid hands on it.

I'm not against covers- and some slow covers can be decent occasionally- but this stuff has all the power of the tepid urine of an anaemic gnat.

@shadyzadienjoy
I just Googled them. They're french & their name stands for New Wave. They have a whole album full of English New Wave songs from my teenage years sang in this soft wishy washy way. Awful!!
Mind you if you can't sleep I suggest you have a listen. I've just woken from a mI'd morning nap, they sent me to sleep! Now I'm behind with my house work. ..

Dawny65 · 17/07/2020 10:58

Nouvelle Vague have even covered This is not a Love Song by Public Image. I never thought Johnny Rotten would sell out by letting his tunes be covered like this. So much for his punky, rebellious, anarchist & antI-capitalist image he portrays

ShebaShimmyShake · 17/07/2020 11:03

Holy cow, THIS is how you cover a Green Day song.

user1471565182 · 17/07/2020 11:05

Dont forget the appalling mock north european accent they have to adopt

SerenDippitty · 17/07/2020 11:05

I like the Carpenters’ cover of Ticket to Ride. (Dons tin hat)

HandsOffMyRights · 17/07/2020 11:09

@SerenDippitty

I like the Carpenters’ cover of Ticket to Ride. (Dons tin hat)
And I've no issues with this either as Karen didn't try to sing in a 'breathy' and 'little girl' way (which I am so sick of hearing on covers). I adore KC's voice and originality.
HandsOffMyRights · 17/07/2020 11:12

And that version of Manic Monday....Gives me the rage.

PuppyMonkey · 17/07/2020 11:22

Came on here specifically to grumble about Manic Monday.

Also the horrendous Can't Get You Out of My Head on The Secrets She Keeps - thank God I watched it on iplayer so I could FF through the opening credits.

LoafingLiz · 17/07/2020 11:30

Dancing in the Moonlight needs a punch in the chops.

Radio gets turned off every time 😡

Gingernaut · 18/07/2020 09:25

I understand the weak, breathy, 'little girl', singing style is called 'Indie Girl'.

www.acelinguist.com/2018/10/dialect-dissection-indie-girl-voice.html?m=1

They all seem to sound like Björk wannabies singing the theme tune to the latest Scandi-noir gore fest.

I like covers, but only if they bring something new and distinctive to an existing song.

I adore Postmodern Jukebox and while I may not like every song they cover, they add a vintage twist to modern songs.

BlusteryShowers · 18/07/2020 10:20

I'm going against the grain to say I love an acoustic cover version! It's one of my favourite playlists on Spotify. Not all of them are breathy and slow, mind you but they are a nice bit of relaxing background music for when I'm working.

They even organise them by season so I can have autumn acoustic for instance with a wooly jumper, thick socks and a hot chocolate and go FULL PINTEREST Grin

powershowerforanhour · 18/07/2020 14:18

Do you like your username weather so you can go full hygge-chic?

BlusteryShowers · 18/07/2020 23:03

@powershowerforanhour haha! Yes absolutely, and I gaze out of a wet window from under my fluttery eyelashes Grin

Chicchicchicchiclana · 18/07/2020 23:16

That Kate Rusby cover of Manic Monday tops the pile of a very shite pile indeed. There was another thread where we had a good old moan about it the other day, deeply satisfying to find there are so many of us who feel the absolute RAGE at this type of singing.

And give me Dolly singing her own song I Will Always Love You any day of the week!

Gingernaut · 19/07/2020 01:06

Kill me now.

MzHz · 19/07/2020 11:04

@Gingernaut

Kill me now.

Oh lord god! I didn’t even know such a thing existed!

Won’t listen to it cos, you know, but wishy washy version of something already fairly wishy...

Gingernaut · 19/07/2020 11:12

@MzHz

It only came out on 6th July. So, 'new'.

YouTube comments are very flattering, although it does sound like some commentators haven't realised this is a cover. Confused

Deedoubleyou · 19/07/2020 11:13

OMG thank you! This is my absolute pet peeve of the moment my family laugh at how angry I get!

Love Island last year was also full of these slow down, wishy washy covers of dance songs last year.

thebees · 19/07/2020 11:13

Blandness in music was one of the responses to the early 80s and all the conflict/hardship/political polarisation there was. Let us hope for no repeat.

LolaSmiles · 19/07/2020 11:16

YANBU!

I thought someone was taking the Mick when I heard the Toploader cover. It's terrible.
Ironic that more than one person has slated the ‘Toploader cover’. You do know THEY covered ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’, right?
I'm not seeing the irony. The Toploader one is good and this new one is breathy and yet another awful cover in that's silly breathy voice that everyone and their dog is doing.

People aren't slating someone for doing a cover. They're saying the cover is awful. No irony.

nevermorelenore · 19/07/2020 14:12

@Dawny65

At least when Nouvelle Vague did it it was something new. I actually didn't mind them at the time because it was very tongue in cheek. Too Drunk to Fuck is also a great cover.

Holy hell I saw the viagra advert the other night. It was so so shit. If I had a penis, that song would make me lose my erection too. At least it replaced that old advert with the dirty looking man dancing around.

Skyliner001 · 19/07/2020 14:24

They are so bad

donnatellme · 19/07/2020 14:29

Ellie Goulding murdered the beautiful song "River" - I feel depressed every time I hear it. The Joni Mitchell version is heartbreakingly beautiful , the Goulding version just sounds insipid and bland. There should be laws against bad cover versions.

Silentplikebath · 19/07/2020 14:33

I’m so glad other people feel the same about so many wonderful songs that have ruined by singers who can’t really sing.

Amummyatlast · 19/07/2020 14:39

I think we need to add the recent cover of Tracy Chapman’s ‘Fast car’ to the list of shit covers. What were they thinking.

I also loathe the recent cover of ‘Dancing in the moonlight’. Stop destroying good songs!
