To hate washy covers of songs

powershowerforanhour · 15/07/2020 22:39

Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" in the Volvo ad
Proclaimers' (I'm Gonna Be) 500 miles -Viagra ad
On the radio- some shit version of Toploader's Dancing in the Moonlight

All sung in a wishy washy breathy pathetic style. Probably by the same person. Who sounds like they could barely blow out a candle.

Born to be Wild is associated with one of the most famous counterculture films ever.
500 miles should be sung near the end of a concert with a horde of drunk fans roaring the "Ba dah bah" line back
Even Dancing in the Moonlight was a nice bouncy summer tune till she got her pallid hands on it.

I'm not against covers- and some slow covers can be decent occasionally- but this stuff has all the power of the tepid urine of an anaemic gnat.

YANBU.

I knew before you even opened your thread that you'd mention the viagra ad!

It's totally awful, absolutely trashes the song. Sometimes covers can be great but I don't understand this sudden trend for taking great rock/upbeat songs and turning them into simpering ballads. It happens at Christmas as well.

Dita73 · 16/07/2020 02:49

I’m with you 100%! I blame Ellie bloody Goulding. John Lewis are to blame too. The majority of their Christmas ads have got a classic song slowed down with a breathy female vocal and it ruins it. Unfortunately it’s not just Christmas ads now,it’s all year round. I cannot bloody stand it! If anyone screws up anything by Prince I’ll seriously lose it!

Binkybix · 16/07/2020 02:54

Yes, yes, a million times yes. Every fucking Christmas another one is ruined.

sparkli · 16/07/2020 04:32

Oh yes! Heard a similar type cover of Manic Monday on the radio last week. Awful, and the viagra add is an abomination. Probably a nice wee earner for the Proclaimers, mind you!

talkingkrustydoll · 16/07/2020 06:30

I've found my people. I saw this advert the other day and had good old rant about it. Luckily my 15yr old knows the original and actually agrees with me.

I have a real hatred of whispering so this kind of music really gets on my nerves.

ShebaShimmyShake · 16/07/2020 06:58

Ellie Goulding can breathe? Whenever I've heard her, her voice has been compressed and stretched until she sounds like a very shouty robot. Might have to check this stuff out just to see what she sounds like, although probably not since I don't care. Hate every song I've heard.

leftovercoffeecake · 16/07/2020 07:15

Ugh yeah I hate it! I’ve heard some people refer to that kind of voice as singing in cursive Grin

daytripper28 · 16/07/2020 07:19

OP you are not wrong!!

Fucking shite sad excuse for music!!

At last I can express my discontent properly. Can also add the very drippy and wet advert that is the Lloyds advert with the foal? It's just a fricking bank people - not a whole philosophy and life support system.

[my family are sick of hearing me rant on - it is no doubt rather tedious for them]

BarbaraofSeville · 16/07/2020 07:20

To be honest, I have no opinion on these, but they give DP the absolute rage.

I don't know if it's fashion, or some sort of royalties dodge, ie if they ruin the song beyond recognition to the original, they don't have to pay the royalties to use it in an advert.

Judethe0bscure · 16/07/2020 07:20

Completely agree!

However it seems to work the other way round.

Has anyone heard the cover of Sound of Silence by The Disturbed?

poorbuthappy · 16/07/2020 07:22

I still don't understand why the songs from the Greatest Showman so soon after the film was released. Bloody ruined them.

Scout2016 · 16/07/2020 07:32

I YANBU - they are painful, hate with a passion and I can't understand why any one thinks we need YET ANOTHER one. I was going to blame Novelle Vague and those radio 1 live lounge sessions where a talentless popstrel "wows and suprises" everyone by churning out an insipid version of Black Sabbeth or something, just to show how varied their tastes are.

Lunaballoon · 16/07/2020 07:42

I was saying this to DH when we heard the Born to be Wild car ad. We were both sat opened mouthed - what a fucking abomination!

JMG1234 · 16/07/2020 07:52

For me, it's Leona Lewis' cover of Run by Snow Patrol. I like Leona Lewis but it's so slow, I can feel my anger bubbling after the first two lines. It's as if someone took the original and played it at a quarter speed.

talkingkrustydoll · 16/07/2020 07:59

@daytripper28 my dd can't stand that advert with the foal either.

Funkyslippers · 16/07/2020 08:17

I can't abide Eva Cassidy's Somewhere over the Rainbow Yeah I hate it too. She changed the tune as well as making it very dull

Funkyslippers · 16/07/2020 08:18

I really hate Your Song at the best of times, so you can imagine how I feel when I hear Ellie Goulding's breathy, annoying version. Such an awful song to start with. Those words! A six year old could write better!!!

sashh · 16/07/2020 08:31

I blame Whitney Houston.

Specifically her version of 'I will always love you', which I do have to say worked, but spawned a trend to slow everything down.

Scout2016 · 16/07/2020 08:51

@sashh did she slow it down? I think it's same but with the illusion of being slowed down brought on by warbling and elongation.

I like the use of Your Song in Moulin Rouge. Ewan can't really sing (or, at times, act) and it's not a great song but it works for me. Not too wishy washy though so maybe doesn't count.

AftonGlen · 16/07/2020 08:57

Has anyone heard the pathetic cover of New Order's 'Blind Faith'? It is one of the adverts just now, I couldn't tell you who it was for as I was so incensed by the wishy washy singing. Fuck sake! Hmm

Zenithbear · 16/07/2020 09:00

I agree. I hate them. I saw the Steppenwolf ad and felt like I had blood coming out of my ears.
It's unbelievably shit. The original is amazing and can't be bettered, especially by this slow breathy bollocks.

TroysMammy · 16/07/2020 09:06

When I read the OP's title I immediately thought of that wishy washy, insipid cover of Dancing in the Moonlight. It doesn't make you feel like dancing, it's a lullaby.

HandsOffMyRights · 16/07/2020 09:12

I hear you OP! Hate this current trend.
Usually a classic rocking track, usually covered by a female singing in a 'baby' voice, always slowed down.

I think I heard a Tears for Fears one the other day (not the Jules one, I don't mind that version).

Not heard the New Order True Fairh one. Sounds hideous.

HandsOffMyRights · 16/07/2020 09:13

@Dita73

Yy! This explains it for me too.
