To hate washy covers of songs

Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" in the Volvo ad
Proclaimers' (I'm Gonna Be) 500 miles -Viagra ad
On the radio- some shit version of Toploader's Dancing in the Moonlight

All sung in a wishy washy breathy pathetic style. Probably by the same person. Who sounds like they could barely blow out a candle.

Born to be Wild is associated with one of the most famous counterculture films ever.
500 miles should be sung near the end of a concert with a horde of drunk fans roaring the "Ba dah bah" line back
Even Dancing in the Moonlight was a nice bouncy summer tune till she got her pallid hands on it.

I'm not against covers- and some slow covers can be decent occasionally- but this stuff has all the power of the tepid urine of an anaemic gnat.

The cover of Oasis ‘Wonderwall’ in the Renault Clio advert was horrendous.

If you’re not Noel or Liam. Don’t sing it.

(That means you too MrSneakyBlinder....however good at Karaoke you think you are!)

nevermorelenore · 16/07/2020 15:05

Oh god. 5 minutes on YouTube and I think I've found the worst one. And I like Billie Eilish. She has some great original songs. Someone get that girl a coffee before she falls off her chair.

Takethatandparty30 · 16/07/2020 15:18

I completely agree, why take a brilliant upbeat song and take away everything that made it good? They make me angry!

belvoirbeaver · 16/07/2020 15:20

@StealthPolarBear

Yes I hate this too. Usually the video is the women staring into the distance. Whoever covered your song by Elton John is the person I can't bear.
And the woman is always in a white nightie.

I cannot stand all these covers. I blame the John Lewis Christmas adverts. And the Radio 1 live lounge. Thats a cesspit of breathy covers.

Crispsnatcher · 16/07/2020 15:25

I had this exact discussion with someone a few years back. Whiny breathy female voices wrecking songs to their hearts content. Ams they all sound the sodding same. I'm glad it isn't just me, I thought I was being irrational.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 16/07/2020 15:52

The Disturbed’s cover done well, made there own but give a nod to the original.

Johnny cash’s cover of Hurt (Nine Inch nails) is equally excellent.
Or Kurt Cobain’s cover of Man who stole the world.

Not I just ran up 20 flights of stairs and I’m trying to sing breathless covers or a cover than is exactly the same composition as the original just a lot shitter.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 16/07/2020 16:08

Triple j’s “Like a version” has a lot to answer for.
Few are great, Most are average, some are just crap.

lynsey91 · 16/07/2020 16:13

I too want to know who the posters are that think you are being unfair. Are they tone deaf?

There are some good cover versions of songs and a couple I prefer to the originals - Pet Shop Boys and You were always on my mind and Phil Collins Baby Love to name two. But I hate all the ones mentioned.

I don't like female singers with weak breathy voices anyway - can't stand Katie Melua.

Why can't the advertisers use the original versions. I felt murderous when John Lewis used the Lily Allen version of the Keane song. I did say that on another thread on here some months ago and was told her version was so much better!

The Kylie Monogue cover I hated so much I had to record the programme so I could whizz past it.

You're welcome :)

LadyofTheManners · 16/07/2020 20:07

I was shouting at the radio about 3 days ago
Some teen bloody American has brutalised No More I love Yous by Annie Lennox. It's shockingly shite. Embarrassingly so.
There are so many properly bad ones. You had that awful version of Power of Love a few years back that made me want to shove my radio out a window.

Yes! It's horrific isn't it! I'd have thrown the radio.out of the window if it wasn't my car one!
TheSoapyFrog · 16/07/2020 20:23

God yes!!! I'm so glad it's not just me that loathes this.

TreesoftheField · 16/07/2020 20:36

As I'm reading this an advert has murdered 'Venus'...... Gargh an amazing upbeat song being whined out by someone on life support

How can anything by Lily Allen be anything other than shit? She doesn't even have a singing voice, she uses her talking voice throughout, and it doesn't even have a pleasant tone; it's nasal and whingey. Didn't she crucify Dub Be Good to Me a few years ago?
Gingernaut · 16/07/2020 20:37
and it drove me nuts.

I couldn't work out where I had heard it before. Then I Googled it and worked it out.

Julie Covington's version was a cover of

The latest one is a complete travesty.

MiddlesexGirl · 16/07/2020 20:46

Can I slot Anne Hathaway's truly awful breathy talky rendition of I Dreamed A Dream in with all the covers?

ShinyFootball · 16/07/2020 20:51

This desecration needs to stop.

It is an OUTRAGE.

Why are they doing it? Why why why?

Mind you I have form for this. They used smalltown boy on a boots ad a couple years back and I was livid at taking such a groundbreaking political song and making it about a boy fancying a girl and buying her shit from boots.

titsmcgee · 16/07/2020 20:56

I'm buoyed by the disdain for Katie Melua on this thread. She is my kryptonite. I once had to flee midway through a brunch date because they played that bloody "bicycles in Beijing" song. There was no second date.

The80sweregreat · 16/07/2020 20:59

I think it was Ella Henderson who did ' your the one that I want ' on the X factor in a breathy slow whine. I really liked her singing up to that point as she's is good.
I blame John Lewis too for all this slowing down the numbers : I wonder if they will bother with a Christmas song and ad this year ? Anything covid related and I will not be happy!

The80sweregreat · 16/07/2020 21:05

I don't mind Katie Melua , but I couldn't listen to a whole album of her singing.
The ' can't get you out of my head' slowed down isn't great.
Best upbeat cover was ' wonderwall ' by Mike flowers pops! Some can be better than the original ( sometimes) and occasionally I don't realize they are cover versions!

MulticolourMophead · 16/07/2020 21:11
Completely agree!

However it seems to work the other way round.

Has anyone heard the cover of Sound of Silence by The Disturbed?
I love the Disturbed version.

It's not wishy washy, but in your face.

The80sweregreat · 16/07/2020 21:12

The disturbed did ' smooth criminal ' too I think? Or someone did ., That was good.

The80sweregreat · 16/07/2020 21:15

Weird Al jankovic ( I think that is how you spell it) and his comedy parodies of songs are funny! The E bay song is a classic.
Covers with a twist.

lynsey91 · 16/07/2020 21:32

I am in the minority in that I am not keen on The Disturbed's version of Sounds of Silence.

It's one of my all time favourite songs from one of my favourite films though. The first film I saw at the cinema with a friend rather than my parents (we played truant from school to see it)
