A question for Irish landlords/Estate agents

I am posting here for traffic. AIBU for wondering why Irish landlords and Estate agents do not give accommodation to people on Housing Asistance Payment.

I have been looking for a two bedroom property anywhere around Dublin and the surrounding counties for 2 and a half years now and I can't even get a viewing now.

I am a respectable woman who has fallen into difficulty in my life and it seems like no one will give me a chance. My partner of 10 years left me and our 4 month old baby to be with another woman. It ended in a very unhealthy way which has had a very negative effect on my life. I had to move back to my parents which was not ideal as both of them suffer with their mental health. It is a difficult house to live in.

I just want to give my son a good life and it seems impossible. I am not working because I have no childcare for my son until he starts his montessori placement when he is 3.

I just wonder when life will get better and someone will help us. Does anyone have any advise to help me in my search for a property? Anything would be helpful because my life is getting harder.

Renting might be easier outside Dublin and its commuter belt. Can you extend your search to other areas?

Yes I have searched in all the counties where HAP is accepted by the council but no landlord will take it. I would consider moving anywhere

HAP is capped and if landlords can get more by renting privately then that's what they will do.

Crazycrazylady · 24/07/2020 21:29

We're landlords and gladly accept HAP. Never had an issue.

A close relative is a landlord and gladly accepts HAP too, but @ShiveringCoyote does have a point. There is a cap on HAP and it varies by area - a list of the rent limits is available online. I think maybe in Cork or Galway (counties rather than cities), HAP limits are reasonably high, but rents are lower, so you might do better.
