It's all a bit nasty to be honest. Genuine typos or mistakes that are actually humorous (eg. 'escape goat'), fine. But just snarking at people's spelling and grammar - who may well have dyslexia or whatever - is just cuntish.

But who are you decide what is humourous and what’s cuntish? Mileage varies.

MikeUniformMike · 15/07/2020 18:45

No it isn't. I know some people with dyslexia, and in no way would I poke fun at them or anyone else who was genuinely dyslexic.

Some of the mistakes are from autocorrect or are typos, but many like the Chester draws are from not using the right words.

If you know what someone means, it doesn't matter so much, but I see so many spelling mistakes on SM that it worries me.

Ravenesque · 15/07/2020 18:56

I was looking to buy a brooch on eBay a few years back and got so uptight about spelling that if someone had "broach" instead of "brooch" I wouldn't even consider looking at it.

I am, quite obviously, a mentalist.

@MerryInthechelseahotel

Mixing brought and bought up is better than saying 'brung' which is what they say round here Shock I hear everyday "I brung it" and it is painful for me!
We have 'brang' here - weeps
Amibannedorwhat · 15/07/2020 19:07

@thedancingbear

I hope it's going to become a non PC pastime snarking at spelling. Although if you can't do it on MN then where else?

I tend to agree. It's all a bit nasty to be honest. Genuine typos or mistakes that are actually humorous (eg. 'escape goat'), fine. But just snarking at people's spelling and grammar - who may well have dyslexia or whatever - is just cuntish.

Agreed. Just nasty.

Tbh I’m not comfortable with that Whine the Poo one, the profile is still visible and judging from the name English probably isn’t his mother tongue.

MikeUniformMike · 15/07/2020 19:19

I usually look for alternative spellings on ebay. I've had a bargain or two, and have contacted some sellers to let them know if they have listed something using the wrong word (if I hadn't wanted to bid).

When I am looking for something specific, and something is listed as being it, it can be annoying. The one I've noticed recently is shows listed as brogues when they were oxfords or derbys.

@WhatTheD1ckens

I suppose it is sort of funny handwriting but GUID?!
I have a very faint memory that when I started reading Blyton aged about 7 I thought her signature said Guid (or at least started with G)
Mrhodgeymaheg · 15/07/2020 19:26

Normally I turn a blind eye to this sort of thing, as I'm dyslexic and write some howlers myself, but I must say I am tempted by those gorgeous swede boots.

Autocorrect is usually to blame for some of those mistakes.

Yester · 15/07/2020 19:57

It is funny though. I'm dyslexic and often don't even know where to start with words. I can spot other people's though. I don't mind people taking the piss out of my howlers. I spent about 10 minuted trykng to spell this word today...still no idea! But this was my best effort: Kai bosh.

thedancingbear · 15/07/2020 20:27

I'm not the arbiter of anything. I do think, if you're going to take the piss, and you're punching down rather than punching up, then it's probably not cool.

Clearly, some people with dyslexia etc. are fine with their difficulties being the butt of jokes, but many will not be. As I say, it's wankerish.

SnickettyLemon · 15/07/2020 20:29

I saw a couple the other day. Mind you I feel awful as the sellers may have been dyslexic.

I get this all the time. Trying to figure out words that are simple to most people, I spent 30 min one day trying to work out how to spell chaos and I was so off with how it started even the spell checker couldn't work it out. I can't use android anymore because I'm able to corrupt their spellchecker. 🤣
MintyMabel · 15/07/2020 20:57

*”Bureau" or "drawers" are both better and would avoid this issue.

Wouldn’t that be “bewrow”?

Cadent · 15/07/2020 21:04

See, now I wouldn't do that - correct / call out someone's missing words / SPAG. That seems ruder to me than an anonymous thread where individual posters aren't mentioned.

thedancingbear · 15/07/2020 21:10

Right. So you don’t like it yourself, but it’s fine for you to stick the boot into others?

Thanks for clarifying.

@thedancingbear I didn’t say I didn’t like it, I said I wouldn’t do it anyone.

I honestly don’t care! My typos on MN can fill a book! Wink

haha that guy's reactions are as funny as the texts Grin

Loveinatimeofcovid · 16/07/2020 02:13

@Allflightscancelled probably Jane Austen. She also spelled choose chuse. It’s a misspelling of brand new though.

Loveinatimeofcovid · 16/07/2020 02:18

@ladycarlotta I’m pretty sure it’s just a common misspelling of brand new referring to branding irons etc. Similar to fire new as in just forged.

I recently got a Mulberry coin purse on eBay for £3.50 because the listing was misspelt and nobody else bid for it.
MikeUniformMike · 16/07/2020 20:40

Green with envy. How did they spell it?

I have accidentally misspelt a brand name in a listing. I noticed within a few hours though.
