NEED GONE! That seriously pisses me off. Why do they think that telling people 'NEED GONE', will make others want to buy it? Usually they've got a stupid price on it and if anyone dares to offer a more reasonable amount they get shouted down.

Doilooklikeatourist · 15/07/2020 16:58

I went to an advice evening when DD was in Sixth form , and the speaker ( from student finance ) was telling all the parents that student finance would borrow everyone the money

MinnieJackson · 15/07/2020 16:59

I had to got through and edit it before returning it

Muphry's law strikes again! 😁

I hate how people mix up brought and bought

Me too, it drives me nuts! Although, I am dyslexic and prone to making mistakes I just can't see. Other people's mistake however jump straight out at me. It can be a real problem because when I read I don't decode words like a non-dyslexic does. When I read, I'm reading the context, one wrong word and it can change the whole meaning, especially words I've never heard spoken. 😂

I never get that either. I assume that if they're desperate to get rid of it they're going to be less bothered about the price. But noooo, there it is - a scrotty bit of knackered furniture they want £150 for.

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 15/07/2020 17:35

I just searched for Chester Drawers in my local FB Marketplace and there are loads of them! And I did spot a 'Shays Long' a few weeks back....

I used to work with someone who would interrupt meetings to say 'we are going off on a tandem'. She was quite senior so there was a lot of silent shaking.

I hope it's going to become a non PC pastime snarking at spelling. Although if you can't do it on MN then where else?

I could put one of my dyslexic DH's shopping lists up for you - poor guy had to ask me today how to spell "Sloping".

It's often down to local dialect variations.
Or people who don't have a very high level of education and … that's not really their fault.
Or spell check/auto-predict got the better of them.
Or English isn't their first language.

Professional adverts, job applications and publications that should know better, however, are fair game.

I really wish there was a stamp or watermark for dyslexia so that you could effectively flag "a dyslexic person wrote this, don't judge it on its spelling". Maybe it should be a sunflower.

@BeijingBikini

Oh god, I saw an estate agent write up a really expensive house as being in a "sort after" street. If I was selling my house for that much I definitely wouldn't want a listing littered with spelling mistakes...
Several of my local estate agents seem to have an agreement that houses have Principle bedrooms. Maybe cos I live in a posh area.

I wouldn't want a Rough house with unprincipled bedrooms

MikeUniformMike · 15/07/2020 17:56

@NotMeNoNo, we live in a country with free education for all, there is no excuse.

It is not poking fun at people who have dyslexia.

Those who say chester draws don't seem to know what they are saying.

Cassilis · 15/07/2020 18:07

(And to my shame it has just struck me like a thunderbolt why he is called Eeyore)

I thought it was the noise a donkey makes! Is it not?

Cassilis · 15/07/2020 18:08

I know. I was making a joke. Gah.

Really OP? You can tell us, I won't judge! I'm the worst for remembering sayings.

When our house was on the market it was apparently ‘continently placed’ for the city centre Hmm. Despite many requests they never updated the description!
Toomboom · 15/07/2020 18:16

I see this on my local face book all the time. I resist the urge to correct their spelling, but it drives me mad.

Whenwillthisbeover · 15/07/2020 18:20

Swede boots, 😂- they are the same colour as mashed swede too.

I tend to agree. It's all a bit nasty to be honest. Genuine typos or mistakes that are actually humorous (eg. 'escape goat'), fine. But just snarking at people's spelling and grammar - who may well have dyslexia or whatever - is just cuntish.

ladycarlotta · 15/07/2020 18:22

@Allflightscancelled

Actually *@Loveinatimeofcovid*, I saw BRAN new in a classic novel once. It was a Jane Austen or possible a Thackery (maybe Vanity Fair?). Shook me, a bit. Got me to wondering if that was actually the original phrase, perhaps from when goods were packed in bran for delivery?

Anyway, just thought I'd mention it. Bloody sticks in my craw when I see it now Grin

I know it's in Our Mutual Friends - Dickens. But I'm sure it's elsewhere too. Yeah, it means fresh out of the packing bran.
thedancingbear · 15/07/2020 18:23

Yes there is. Dyslexia, or just not being particularly good at reading or writing.

It is not poking fun at people who have dyslexia.

Yes it is.
