New business name brainstorm

Mumsnet hive mind is usually amazing with threads like these and I love a good pun if nothing else so here goes.

I’ve been making crossword puzzles of family names as gifts for my friends and family for a little while now. I use wooden letter tiles with black lettering (a bit like scrabble), on a white background, usually in a black picture frame. It's usually 3-4 names and I try to connect/cross them as much as possible. I’ll attach a picture. Nothing frou frou, very clean modern look. The are always very well received, become a talking point for guests and have been called “our favourite baby gift”. Now I’m hoping to turn a hobby into a business. I’ve been brainstorming names and a list is below. Feel free to critique, pick a favourite or add a new one!

I know there are a lot of rules to consider. What am I selling? Who is it for? I’m happy for the name to have a ‘crossword’ as I don’t think I’ll be selling anything else for now. And it crystallises the idea. The main target is new baby, new pet, wedding, blended families so there is a ‘family gift’ theme. Etsy is the obvious choice but I’ll be on Fb and Insta as well so I want the name to be less cottage industry, more modern interior.

Never a cross word

Callmedolly · 15/07/2020 14:04

Just make sure it doesn't sound like you're a company that makes actual crosswords! (which i think most of them do, sorry!) Circle of trust sounds a bit spooky or exclusive.

I like 'The Connection Collection' best, and also Family Frames.

Could you try a play on words around 'Triple letter score or triple word score like they have in scrabble?

Good luck!

I’ll get my thinking cap on but please consider all these things first

  • check you can get the web domain (even if you don’t want a website now you might at some point).
  • check other similar names on fb, insta etc. Also if you go for a long name can it be shortened to fit with social handles etc.

@catgirl1976

Never a cross word
I like this one a lot. Ties in the crossword pun and the loving family element of having the names interconnected :)

I don’t think you need a name for your “business”. I think you need a name for your Crossword Name Picture Things.

Always be thinking of your customer. Do they care who made/supplied their Crossword Name Picture Things? Not really. Do they want to talk about their Crossword Name Picture Things to other people? Hopefully, yes.

Who made the Rubik’s Cube? Who made the Slinky? Who cares?

Livelaughwhat · 15/07/2020 17:42

I like Rabble. That’s what I affectionately call my family and it’s a play on the word (sc)rabble. Rabble Frames

Abrandnewbrand · 15/07/2020 17:44

@DollyDoneMore you make a very good point, yes a company name might as well end up being different to that particular product. Maybe I'm not thinking big enough.. Smile What would you call the crossword puzzle thing?

These definitely sound more scrabble orientated so think the crossword reference is a bit misleading. I've also seen lots of people doing this so I'd do a bit of research locally about what's on offer.

I like ‘Names in a Frame’ as a product name and ‘The Connection Collection’ As a brand name

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 15/07/2020 17:52

Be aware of Etsy's terms concerning their fees and usage of your pictures to advertise their site without benefit to you as a seller.

Who made the Rubik’s Cube?

Mr Emó Rubik.

DollyDoneMore · 15/07/2020 21:28

No, he invented it. He didn’t sit in his kitchen bashing them out.

PatricksRum · 16/07/2020 09:40

Do you have a picture OP

HermioneMakepeace · 16/07/2020 09:41

Name Frame.
