Will face masks make you more likely to shop and eat out?

I understand the reasons for making face masks compulsory. But I’m not sure whether I’ll want to go out into the shops or restaurants and spend money on the high streets unless I really need something specific once everyone’s faces are covered.

Will compulsory face mask make you:

YES - MORE likely to go out shopping/ eating out on the high street

NO- LESS likely to go out shopping

I won't be going anywhere where I have to wear one.

What an absolute crock of shit.

CamDram · 14/07/2020 07:45

That should say:

YABU- you will be MORE likely to go out shopping/ eating out after face masks are compulsory

YANBU- you will be LESS likely to go out shopping/ eating out after face masks are compulsory

I have been wearing a mask to go shopping since lockdown started so will continue as before. I go the supermarket once/twice per week and high street shopping for the first time yesterday.
The way the pandemic has been handled in the uk has been shambolic.

Goosefoot · 14/07/2020 07:46

Less, I think. I really dislike them, others wearing them more than myself, really.

KatherineJaneway · 14/07/2020 07:48

It won't make a blind bit of difference tbh. If I have to go out and shop, I will. If I want to eat out, I will. Don't like wearing a mask but what can you do 🤷‍♀️

DappledThings · 14/07/2020 07:49

I've had hardly any reason to go to the shops for months. I needed a birthday card last week and had DC in town for the first time since March. We popped to a card shop then had a lovely coffee/babychinno in our favourite cafe and it felt like a nice slice of normality.

If I'd had to have a mask on I'd have done that in and out of the card shop asap and no wandering about or stopping for coffee. Less money spent on my high street.

PersonaNonGarter · 14/07/2020 07:50

There are loads of threads on this, with tonnes of people insisting that people wearing masks will make them more likely to shop because they ‘feel safe’.

That’s bullshit, of course. Anyone who knows anything about consumer psychology or how retail works to get people to spend, knows that putting people in masks will reduce both footfall and average spend.

We just have to hope that common sense prevails and that the mask thing goes back to being optional.

ScrapThatThen · 14/07/2020 07:50

I think this is a sensible time to take additional precautions. And it would be nice if people stopped commenting negatively to people wearing them.

milveycrohn · 14/07/2020 07:50

I dislike wearing a mask and will go shopping as little as possible.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/07/2020 07:51

Won't make a difference to me. I'd prefer not to wear one but if I have to I have to. I'm not going to let it stop me living my life.

romeolovedjulliet · 14/07/2020 07:51

i'm shopping online instead, can't wear a mask as it will trigger ptsd and that in turn seriously affects my mental health

runbummyrun · 14/07/2020 07:51

I won't be going anywhere now. What a load of shit.

Cupcakegirl13 · 14/07/2020 07:53

I won’t be going anywhere they are mandatory unless it’s an absolute urgent need ! I think it’s a joke that this government have editors for 4 months to implement this as things subside. How can it possibly be taken seriously.

crossstitchingnana · 14/07/2020 07:54

Why are we so opposed to wearing a face covering? It helps to save lives. The people it pisses off are those who want to pretend Covid has gone away. Well, it hasn't.

Wankerchief · 14/07/2020 07:55

Why are the British So anti mask when our crisis is unmanageable and and mask wearing countries have it under control. We have the highest death rate in europe By a huge amount and still saying we will wilt, pass out and fieif we put a thin price of cloth over our mouths for Even a second

This is why everyone hates britain and america. We are stuck with the we are better do we dont need to fo anything attitude.

Mrsemcgregor · 14/07/2020 07:56

I think barring the most extreme of reasons people really do just need to get over themselves. Yes it’s a bit uncomfortable and embarrassing at first but we are in a pandemic and this might help prevent cases. Spain and Italy have 86% of the population wearing masks and here we are whining and grizzling like the bloody Americans. Now THATS embarrassing.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 14/07/2020 07:57

The amount of people who claim to have a genuine reason as to why they absolutely cannot even consider wearing one, is staggering.

PicsInRed · 14/07/2020 07:58

Less likely. If a nice day out shopping is actually a miserable day where I can't see what's just down in front of my face, and I cant breathe freely, why would I go shopping? Pointless. So I won't.

This will finish off the high street and also destroy the malls - where you won't even be able to take your mask off when you exit a shop.

I'll stick to essentials for now and buy books from shudder amazon.

NiknicK · 14/07/2020 07:59

Less likely. I’ll be sending my DH to the shops or shopping online from now on.

PenelopePitstop49 · 14/07/2020 07:59

The virus has affected 0.04% of the population, and is now believed to have mutated into a much less deadly form. Yes elderly people and those with serious health conditions need to be protected, but the general population en masse doesn't.

Less than 400 people under 45 have died. Out of a population of 66 million +.

It literally is insane.

I'll wear it when I have to go to the supermarket, but I won't go leisure shopping. Many will do the same.
nannynick · 14/07/2020 08:00

Neither - already wear a face covering when going shopping and I avoid doing that too often... roughly every 8-10 days.

CamDram · 14/07/2020 08:01

I don’t mind wearing a mask, in fact I have to day to day at work.
What will feel so odd will be seeing everyone else wearing them- just seeing eyes and no face. I think it will mean me just dashing into a shop for a specific item if I really need it rather than enjoying a relaxing wander round (and the additional spending that inevitably led to) as I used to.

Vivana · 14/07/2020 08:01

Think about us retail staff who have to wear them for hours on end and now Boris wants us to encourage shoppers to wear them.

Sorry Boris but I'm not encouraging shoppers to wear masks it's not.my job to do that so you can stick that idea where the sun dont shine.

KetoPenguin · 14/07/2020 08:01

I think the combination of not having gone shopping much during lockdown and not liking to wear the mask will make me a lot less likely to go into town unless I really need something. I've got used to staying in and ordering stuff. I'm not anti mask but I just don't like wearing it.
