Will face masks make you more likely to shop and eat out?

I understand the reasons for making face masks compulsory. But I’m not sure whether I’ll want to go out into the shops or restaurants and spend money on the high streets unless I really need something specific once everyone’s faces are covered.

Will compulsory face mask make you:

YES - MORE likely to go out shopping/ eating out on the high street

NO- LESS likely to go out shopping

I hope we don't see the pathetic tantrums that we have seen in the states. At least we don't have a constitution for people to make up parts of.

Porcupineinwaiting · 14/07/2020 09:04

@HorseChestnutTree quite a lot of asthmatics are delighted at the introduction of face coverings as not being able to breath - something that COVID is very good at - is something they fear.

Most asthmatics lead perfectly normal lives, - we are not a on the verge of death at all times, as the "underlying conditions " rhetoric would have you believe.

Imissmoominmama · 14/07/2020 09:05

I use Apple Pay a lot. I had to pull my mask down in Booths yesterday so that my phone could recognise my face. Back to the debit card!

MandosHatHair · 14/07/2020 09:06

I'm more than happy to wear one for the supermarket shop and any other essential shopping. I'll be giving 'recreational' shopping a miss for a little while longer because I don't want to wear a mask for a prolonged period of time.

ThatDamnScientist · 14/07/2020 09:06

@TheGreatWave

I will wear one, but I was simply go back to limiting where and when I go.

And it is ridiculous telling someone who lip reads they can be exempt, because it is others wearing a mask that is the issue.

It isn't the person who lip reads bit the person supporting someone who relies on lip reading.
vanillandhoney · 14/07/2020 09:08

I'll just shop online. I can't wear a mask due to autism and don't fancy all the staring and judging that I'll be on the receiving end of, so I'll just stay home. Far easier that way.

userxx · 14/07/2020 09:08

I'll go out less. Crazy really as we need to get the economy going again 🤷‍♂️

keepingbees · 14/07/2020 09:10

I will wear one if I have to go in a shop. I won't be going out to leisurely shop and browse. I don't see how they can be used when eating out.
I can't understand why this rule has come at this point when no one had to wear masks at the beginning and height of the pandemic. As usual it all seems like an afterthought, too little too late.

Wankerchief · 14/07/2020 09:10

'RE apple pay, or just use a passcode or fingerprint rather than facial recognition, simple solution to a non problem

Shakirasma · 14/07/2020 09:10

Until this pandemic I genuinely had no idea that we were such a nation of whingeing drama queens, its embarrassing! Just wear a damn mask and go about your business ffs.

Mrsemcgregor · 14/07/2020 09:11

@HorseChestnutTree people can’t complain about the “death of the high street” if they are the ones refusing to shop because they don’t like wearing a mask. They could choose to suck it up in order to save the high street but they are making the valid choice to stay home. Yes it’s ok to make the choice but they can’t then stamp their feet because the shops are suffering. Or would they prefer more people died?

I have asthma and long term complications from having caught covid in a shop 3 months ago. I still use daily steroids to breath easier. I wear a mask to make sure I protect other people, I don’t know if I can still catch and carry covid - I could have it right now and so could you.

BakedBlossoms · 14/07/2020 09:12

Well I was quite happy to go out to eat already (and have done a few times since restaurants and cafes were allowed to open again), but I hadn't been to many shops now. I'm quite happy to go wearing a mask though, and for others to wear them.

People are just hysterical about masks and it's pathetic. My 4 year old wears one without complaining, for crying out loud.

BakedBlossoms · 14/07/2020 09:14

quite a lot of asthmatics are delighted at the introduction of face coverings as not being able to breath - something that COVID is very good at - is something they fear.

My driving instructor is asthmatic and says she cannot wear a mask for this reason.

bluebluezoo · 14/07/2020 09:14

No I’ll be staying in unless essential.

I lip read so it makes things very difficult. I spend the entire conversation asking people to repeat themselves, then doing that awkward giggle hoping it sounds like agreement with whatever they’ve just said.

Nquartz · 14/07/2020 09:15

I hate wearing one because no matter what I do my glasses mist up & I start hyperventilating.

I only wear one on my weekly shop and I think it will put a stop to DD & I "just popping into co op for a magazine" type visits so we will spend less bit it won't be a huge amount.

Bluesheep8 · 14/07/2020 09:16

But how does it work in pubs/restaurants? So I have to wear a mask to go into a shop for 5 minutes, but then take it off to sit in a pub to eat and drink with other people 1 metre away for hours? Confused

SkinnyChicky · 14/07/2020 09:17

Most masks are not small enough to stop small water droplets, let along a virus suspended in the air. Not to mention that most people dont wear them properly. Not doing anything other than essential food shoping until the rule changes.

Nquartz · 14/07/2020 09:18

Although just seen the tip about taping it to my nose so I'll try that!

HorseChestnutTree · 14/07/2020 09:21

People can’t complain about the “death of the high street” if they are the ones refusing to shop because they don’t like wearing a mask

But I am not sure that many people are stamping their feet about it. It seems to be the government is now worried about the economy, so they are hoping this will make people feel safer going out and about. Only some people have said they don't want to go out and about in a mask so they will stay at home. Why is that causing so much venom in others? What is it you want? For people to be frog marched to the high streets to be forced to spend money? If people don't want to shop, for whatever reason, then that is perfectly fine.

I am sorry you have had a difficult time with COVID but surely people staying home rather than going out and about even with masks makes it safer for you? I can't understand why you are getting worked up about others choosing to stay home, I really can't.

IdblowJonSnow · 14/07/2020 09:22

Neither. I pretty much only go shopping when I need to anyway. My DH tends to do most of food shopping and has worn a mask for the last few weeks. I've got no objection to wearing them in shocks to help protect staff who are exposed to potential risk all day.
Re mtg friends in bars/restaurants that would deter me because I speak quietly anyway and i think people wouldn't know what i was saying and being out for 2 or 3 hours and wearing a mask is very different to a 30 min dash around a supermarket. But I'm not opposed to it in principle.
I personally think that aiming to eradicate it is a better stance than flattening the curve. If its stays at a level where 100 ish people are dying a day then it's still circulating in amounts where it can suddenly go through the roof again. If we can get it to the tens or less then that's a much better situation to be in by September when all the schools return and more people will be back at work and using public transport more.

Hercwasonaroll · 14/07/2020 09:23

Far less likely. Going out had just got to an acceptable point. Social distancing but felt safe.

Now I won't be able to hear anything I'll go back to being a recluse.

Costacoffeeplease · 14/07/2020 09:23

We go out to eat and drink wearing masks. We wear them to enter the restaurant, remove them once seated and only wear them again when going to the loo (and therefore passing staff and other customers) or leaving the restaurant

It’s not rocket science

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 14/07/2020 09:24

I'll go out more. I haven't been wearing one because it felt pointless when 90pc of people weren't, but it did make me uncomfortable and I do think it should be compulsory for those who arent exempt. Last time I went to the shops some manky guy was sneezing all over the place and not even attempting to do it in a tissue / elbow. Gross.

To me, putting up with a slight inconvenience to help make vulnerable people safer is a no brainer. I am surprised about how many people say 'I don't want to wear them, it only protects the old and vulnerable'...that's millions! It's slightly uncomfortable, that's all. Unless you have a genuine medical reason not to wear them eg panic attacks, autism, asthma, get over it. Yes the government messed up the message and it's a bit late, but that doesnt mean that doesn't help spread the disease

Hingeandbracket · 14/07/2020 09:25

I won't mind wearing a mask to go to the shops. There is fuck all chance of me going out for a meal and wearing one however.

Hercwasonaroll · 14/07/2020 09:26

IT'S NOT A SLIGHT INCONVENIENCE IF YOU CAN'T HEAR!!
