Do I pay my hairdresser double?

My mum and I have been discussing our first post lockdown haircut. I won't get mine done for a while (shielding) but should we pay double first time back? If not, how much would/do you plan to tip?

For reference a cut costs roughly £20 for mum and £30 for me and this wouldn't break the bank for either of us but equally don't want to seem OTT.

YABU - double?! What you thinking?!
YANBU - of course you should pay double, they haven't been able to work for the last 3 months.

I pay my hairdresser what she charges, I never tip, it makes me squirm thinking about it. She runs her own business & charges accordingly, to me it just feels patronising to tip. I maybe out of line here in accepted practice but I just can't do it.

This ^
I have a mobile hairdresser. It is her own business. She is a confident, professional woman. She works out what the right price is, that is cheap enough that people will pay / want to use her, but expensive enough that it covers all her expenses, her taxes, her 'pay' and enough to cover any holidays / annual leave / sick leave. As all self employed business people do.
If she chooses to put her prices up - that is fine, and I understand completely. If she doesn't, that is her considered judgement.

There are exceptions and people that 'fall between the lines' but most people should have either received furlough or, if self employed, that grant.

It’s a lovely though but not one I’m nice enough to have had £10 each on tip would suffice.

If you want to give generous tip I’m sure they’ll appreciate it

People tip hairdressers...?
Really?!
I have never in my life offered a tip and wouldn’t think to.

I don’t tip either! Not at £45 a haircut and £65 for colour

@JinglingHellsBells

Is that because they earned over the limit for self employed grant?

*@lifesalongsong* There is no limit- you get 80% of your average earnings over a 3-month period, based on your tax return over the last 3 years.

Can you link that please, I'm sure Martin Lewis said there was a limit and he knows his stuff

I'm getting my hair done tomorrow Grin by my usual mobile hairdresser. I usually pay £55 plus £5 tip, I will be giving him £70 tomorrow, it wont make a massive difference to what he has missed out on but it's a gesture and acknowledgement of how he has been missed and how much he is appreciated!

My hairdresser has put her prices up 10% which is totally fine and understandable, plus I gave a tip. My cut and colour (minus tip) was £77 so couldn’t afford to pay double.

I had mine cut today - alleluia!! I paid exactly the same as before. At the price mine costs, there was no question of paying double!

Just to say as well, a pp sorry can’t remember who, did touch on this earlier - our job has suddenly become a high risk profession. Those of us who have vulnerable family and friends feel like we perhaps can’t see them for their own protection. I certainly won’t be going to the pub or to eat out any time soon as i don’t want to put my dc, their dad, his elderly mum or my friends at any more risk from being in contact with me than they already are. My life is strictly work/home for the foreseeable. So it is super nice when people make kind gestures that show they appreciate this. But it’s by no means expected - i’m in the same boat as people in retail and lots of other jobs. And a lot of my clients are regulars and such lovely people, i’ve genuinely missed them. Just putting it out there: remember to be kind (but obvs kindness isn’t just about tipping, if you’ve loved being back at your hairdresser’s, and love and appreciate their work, tell them!)

I've been double paying taxi drivers........it's been an awful time for self employed people who had the rug pulled from under them. We've had a few, too many suicides. Probably as a direct result.

If people want to pay double and can afford to then that can only be a good thing.

My friends mum is a mobile hairdresser and is doing mine for the first time in a couple of weeks. I'd usually pay between £70-£80 for my hair at a salon, she is charging me £55 as I know her daughter. I'll be paying her £60. If she needed or wanted more, she would have asked for more when I asked her for the price.

Why would anyone pay double?

I gave mine a fiver tip. He said to me who hasn’t benefitted from lockdown if your furloughed your getting paid for staying at home and if you have business premises you get so many thousand grant from the government so financially it didn’t sound like it had it him hard.

Madame My occupation is riskier than yours but I have just carried on as normal. You don’t need to stay home, go out for that meal or take the kids to the park.

Re tipping... My hairdressers has pots on the desk, with each employees name on, so you tip the junior who washed your hair, & the person who cut it. I went to a different hairdresser for a while, he kept the tips pot under the counter so you had to ask for it. Asking for it was awkward, but tips clearly werent expected, as they seem to be in my current place with the pots out.

I paid my hairdresser double. She's a friend and has cut my hair for more than ten years. I would have had the haircut in that time so it was budgeted for. I have been paid (and have worked) throughout.
I'm lucky. Everyone's circumstances are different

@lifesalongsong No I don't have time to link. It will be on HMRC website.

I claimed as I am s/e and got what I described. I can also claim for another 3 months up to October. Maybe you are confusing it with the furlough scheme which is 80% of salary up to £2500 a month?

And anyone who is self employed AND has been on a payroll for some of their earnings can't claim all or much of the s/e grant ,depending on how much they earn through a payroll.

Lifesalong Jingling there is a limit.

Two actually. £50k and under for total earnings and around £6 to £7.k max for individual grant

Minted I guess is all relative?

The self employed ones I know have 4-5 clients a day. All of them pay between £50- £60. So call that £250 a day. Yes, there's product to pay for and insurances, I understand all that.

But even at £200 a day - that's £1k a week.

Hardly skint! I would definitely call £4k a month minted.

I have always paid by card and I have always tipped. The tip is put aside by the owner and given to the hair stylist when they are given their pay after deduction for chair rental etc.

I have been once since they opened up and I tipped more than I usually would but not double as it is pretty expensive as it is.

I tip for all services I receive providing they have been good.

I will pay double what I usually do - but I go to a hairdressers that's a social enterprise, so you pay what you want to anyway. I also contributed to a justgiving page to support the organisation & its staff during lockdown. I normally base my payments on the average hourly rate.

My first haircut was at another local hairdressers, as I wanted it cut before coming on holiday and regular salong not open in time. I didn't tip at all because they charged for my hair (just above the shoulder on one side, shaved on the other) as long.

You're wrong. If you earn over 50k you don't get anything.

You'll need a long time to find a link @JinglingHellsBells as you're wrong, as @MarshaBradyo has posted there is a limit of £50000, if your profits are more than that you get nothing, I did take 20 seconds to check even though I couldn't imagine Martin Lewis would be wrong
