AIBU?

Do I pay my hairdresser double?

My mum and I have been discussing our first post lockdown haircut. I won't get mine done for a while (shielding) but should we pay double first time back? If not, how much would/do you plan to tip?

For reference a cut costs roughly £20 for mum and £30 for me and this wouldn't break the bank for either of us but equally don't want to seem OTT.

YABU - double?! What you thinking?!
YANBU - of course you should pay double, they haven't been able to work for the last 3 months.

My hair recent haircut was £53 (usual price) and I didn't tip. The hairdresser has been on paid furlough, and is now fully booked for a while.

My husband took himself and DS (age 5) to a different hairdresser and was slightly shocked to be charged £30 each...

Why the hell would you pay them more than normal?!

I never tip! Like others have said, surely the prices they charge have taken into account all the costs/overheads and they charge enough to make a profit.

I assumed hair dressers in larger salon franchises were PAYE staff and not self employed. Self employed does make sense though. I go to a very popular salon in my city and noticed that A LOT of their staff have left over lockdown (and even the few months preceding). I did wonder how they could up and leave so fast, even though they had clients booked in.

They’re very active on Instagram and have photos of all their staff up, so it’s obvious when someone has left (their posts get deleted and them unfollowed lol). The lady that has cut my hair for 3 years left last week and my upcoming appointment is now with someone else Sad

Are those people saying they will pay double also planning to pay double for a meal out , a cinema ticket etc? So bizarre !

My self employed hairdressers work in a partnership, they received a £10k grant on the premises and also received SEISS grants. They were fine. I know this as they are friends and were asking me advice de applying for the SEISS grants. So really, they were fine! I appreciate the fees may have gone up due to PPE etc but really, lavish tips? 🙄

@jinglinghellsbells

You're wrong. I find it infuriating on here when posters post incorrect stuff as if it's factual.

I don't know a single self employed person who was eligible for any help whatsoever.
Here's who I know and the reasons why not(

  1. Over the £50k cap. = £0
  2. New business. =£0
  3. Earnt under £1k per year so no tax return. =£0
  4. Earns £10k per year but also earns £11k per year in an employed role. =£0

@Northernsoulgirl45 Those figures are not wrong. If you claimed, you ought to know. Yes, the payment was backdated and first payments were made in May so some people would have little income for a few months. However, anyone who is self employed ought to be saving something for a rainy day as s/e is always unpredictable.

HMRC take an average of your last 3 tax returns for a 3-month period. So if you earned an average of £600 a month (based on your annual return) over 3 years ( 2019, 2018, 2017) you would get 80% of that for 3 months. So that would be £480 x 3.

I got what I expected based on my average earnings for the last 3 years.

Err well given my cut and colour is £200, I don't think so....

My salon has added basically a PP fee, to cover all their extra costs. I happily paid that.

I had my haircut last week. There was a £2.50 surcharge for PPE and I did give a £10 tip . Feel they deserve it .

@arethereanyleftatall Well I know loads of people who got the grant including ME! Don't tell me what I don't know when my grant was exactly what I expected. I'm not stupid, thanks.

Your list includes the exceptions!
Are you aware you have listed those? I also covered a lot of that in my previous post.

  1. Over the £50k cap. = £0

Gross income, but very few people earn more than this.

  1. New business. =£0

So no record of tax returns- as expected.

  1. Earnt under £1k per year so no tax return. =£0

Earned under £1k a year so no need to declare income therefore not eligible.

  1. Earns £10k per year but also earns £11k per year in an employed role. =£0

As I stated in my previous post- if the employed income is more than 50% of total income - no grant.

You've not actually made a point- you've listed exceptions.

I’ve been and paid normal price, usual tip. The hairdressers were furloughed on full pay.

You're missing the fact that you're being told that you were wrong to say there's not a limit on profits to get a grant from the self employed scheme.

You said There is no limit, do you now accept that was incorrect, there 100% is a limit.

No one's disagreeing with you on the method of calculation

My hairdresser came this week. I usually give a tip of about 15% but I gave more this time. But also remember they will have been able to claim a good amount from the government too....

I've just paid £240 this afternoon ( 5 hours in the salon).

I neither tipped nor doubled it. My debit card cried.

@JinglingHellsBells I said that it was wrong to say that there is no limit when there is. Those who earn too much can't claim and those, like me, who has taken on more work in the last year than previous years received a fraction of their usual salary. In my example my grant for 3 months was half of the amount I earnt in March.
It really pisses me off when people go on about self employed getting all this free money when the scheme is in many cases not generous at all.

Crownduals · 13/07/2020 22:17

My hairdresser has added on an extra £15 for Ppe.
That will be nearly £100 in total and I’m not paying any more.

They may have been closed, but no doubt getting funding from the Government though. I am not paying any more than I did before

It's nice to be generous, but paying double and posting about it on the internet, seems a bit virtue signalling to me...

@LostTrust I can beat you on that, mine is £12 yearly!

I do not understand how some people can spend so much on their hair! My hairdresser informs me that mine is in tip top condition, gloriously thick, and others have said they would give their right arm for it. And I spend the above on it a year in a small independent salon.
