Are you being told to clean toilets at work?

If cleaning toilets wasn’t previously anywhere near your job description?

It’s being claimed on another thread that this is just part of the new normal, everyone is pitching in. I’m not convinced.

YABU - I’m being asked to clean toilets

YANBU - I’m not being asked to clean toilets

If you are, are you ok with it?

a shared cleaner moving room to room during the teaching day seems like a very good way for all the 'bubbles' to end up cross-exposed

It's what my teaching job involves - 2 or more classes each day, something's up to 4 or 5. Primary school (infants) - I do PPA (and other forms of absence) cover.

Plus presumably needing to clean the children's toilet area for each class I'm with during that time.

peasaregood · 13/07/2020 18:36

Anyone saying that teachers should be expected to clean toilets because it’s the ‘new normal’ and ‘everyone is mucking in’ now has the polling data to tell that person to fuck off
yes, it's a 3/1 split, but many replies will be from people who haven't been asked to clean toilets as their work environment hasn't really changed.
If you have someone who works in an office of 10 adults and the cleaner is still operating, then no, they won't be asked to clean loos.
You started this thread wanting it to be about teachers so it's a tad disingenuous to imply a poll about all workplaces equates to peoples' opinions on what teaching staff should and should not be doing.
At least be honest next time at what you are actually asking

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 13/07/2020 18:40

Also....

Lots of the people losing jobs may be young retail workers still living with parents, they may have no children. Their benefit entitlement maybe nothing more than JSA. You won't get a lot of hours cleaning for that.

pippitysqueakity · 13/07/2020 18:41

If cleaning should only happen in breaks, what’s the point ? Children go all the time. Child A with Coronavirus, which obviously no one knows about goes at 9.15. Break at 10. 15. Ten other children from same or other classes have gone in meantime. Teacher misses their chance to desanitise self in general but does toilets, because teacher.
By that time 10 other children are happily, unknowingly spreading it far and wide.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 13/07/2020 18:42

Not to mention the fact that the children will be going to the toilet in the break times because they aren't allowed to go during lessons!

TheFallenMadonna · 13/07/2020 18:43

I'm not being asked to clean toilets. I'm cleaning toilets because I'm not asking other teachers to clean toilets, and toilets have to be cleaned.

noblegiraffe · 13/07/2020 18:45

You started this thread wanting it to be about teachers

Making it a general thread on AIBU not mentioning teachers but simply asking if people are being asked to clean toilets at work was me wanting it to be about teachers?

I wanted it to be about people who are not teachers, because the claim was that people who are not teachers are all pitching in cleaning toilets at work. Clearly this poll shows that claim to be bullshit.

Not sure brown noses is quite the right turn of phrase for this thread ! Grin

Or, maybe it is...

rwalker · 13/07/2020 18:47

Problem solved just go and tell them it's clearly beneath you with your academic skills .

canigooutyet · 13/07/2020 18:48

If teachers are cleaning in their lunchtimes and breaks, then when do they get some time off?

Others suggesting it's fine to have a bottle of the bleach in the toilet need to remember when their kids were young. Think about what we had to keep out of reach. Education especially you cannot leave a bottle of bleach hanging around the toilets.

I know all these have stopped at the moment, but how would Ofsted or whoever view it if they saw bottles of bleach in toilets unsecure in the reach of children/vulnerable.

COSHH doesn't just apply when the boss feels like it.

Maybe more people need to look into their own rights before using their own examples of how others businesses, private or not, could operate.

But then I suppose it a pupil got hold of a bottle of cleaning stuff, it would be the teachers fault.

And compared to how some seem to hate their colleagues from previous threads before CV, are you even sure you want to give them free access to all the cleaning stuff? Grin And I'm not just talking about those in education!

This thread does not represent the whole of the UK unfortunately... many posters on here that have been ‘mucking my in..

Purposely starting threads that you know will
end up like this really isn’t doing you or teachers any favours. You really hate working in a school so just leave!

ToBBQorNotToBBQ · 13/07/2020 18:51

Yes we have been asked to clean the toilet after using it. New normal.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 13/07/2020 18:51

@peasaregood actually no.

OP explained very clearly she did the poll because a lot of people claimed they're asked to clean toilets ,despite it not being their job and that it's perfectly normal and everyone should pitch in. Which is obviously bullshit.

The question was never "should teachers clean toilets?".

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 13/07/2020 18:52

@ToBBQorNotToBBQ what about cleaning it after colleagues / clients?

noblegiraffe · 13/07/2020 18:55

Confused I like teaching. And I’ve not been asked to clean toilets.

Tbh until someone pointed out the profession of the op I didn't know. But then I don't start reading an op and try to work out their background.

WrongKindOfFace · 13/07/2020 18:56

@Sr1nkleOverSalad

Pretty sure even maths teachers can accommodate 5 minutes of scheduled light cleaning in a whole school cleaning timetable.Hmm
They probably could, but cleaning secondary school toilets is in no way just five minutes of light cleaning.

The government should ensure schools have enough funding to pay for the additional cleaning needed. (They should ensure they have enough funding full fucking stop.)

Newdaynewname1 · 13/07/2020 18:56

We are not back yet, but I fully expect us to clean. We always have cleaned Labs between users, wiped down desks etc. Its just normal.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 13/07/2020 18:57

I'm a teacher. We are definitely not being expected to clean the toilets. And I'm not prepared to. I've got enough to do.

The other thing in school is that there is nothing to clean them with - bleach etc is not left in the toilets for H&S reasons.

Presumably there are (teens) who might drink it - or pinch it to squirt in each others' eyes. Goodness knows. But there certainly aren't hazardous chemicals left unlocked anywhere.

ToBBQorNotToBBQ · 13/07/2020 18:57

No, everyone cleans it after they use it then we have a cleaner come in every day. We don't clean after each other. Though we do have a rota up to clean door handles/ printer / kettle etc twice a day.

Davincitoad · 13/07/2020 18:58

Teachers shouldn’t be asked to clean toilets

If my schools asked me do that I’ll suggest they put their head down said toilet

Riv12345 · 13/07/2020 19:11

Oops sorry i didn't realise it was a teachers thread 🙈

ChristmasFluff · 13/07/2020 19:11

Yes I am cleaning toilets, no it's not usually part of my job. I'm probably the best-paid cleaner the organisation has ever had. I don't mind. I've done cleaning jobs in the past anyway.

Evelefteden · 13/07/2020 19:13

So why are you posting provoking threads? You know exactly how’s its going to turn out. Are you purposely trying to cause ill feeling towards teachers Confused
peasaregood · 13/07/2020 19:16

Are you purposely trying to cause ill feeling towards teachers
haha, I like this theory.
Giraffe is actually a really pissed off parent and is being a stroppy arse to bring on teacher bashing.
Cunning giraffe :-)
