To say this needs fixing before she visits?

Shortly after start of lockdown, my (adult) DC cracked the loo seat in their bathroom. As a temp measure they taped it up however I told them they needed to replace it, I would pay for it but I needed them to source a replacement. I have been working FT from home, they are both furloughed. Also it's not a standard loo seat so I knew it wouldn't be a simple trip to B&Q. I have my own bathroom.

So months have passed. It's not been done because they are both lazy and I have enough to do without micro managing them. Eldest now wants girlfriend to visit (not sure if this is within lockdown rules, however they and her family all seem to think it's fine so whatever). I've said they need to fix the loo seat before she does. Cue lots of huffing and puffing and how unfair I'm being and they haven't got time etc.

So AIBU?

YANBU at all OP. Carry on.

Jenjar · 14/07/2020 09:04

so I have stuck to my guns...however although they have looked (and definitely spent some time looking not just a 5 min 'can't find it') they cannot find a replacement seat anywhere, they've tried Amazon/Ebay/ bathroom retailers.

No idea what to do now. Or indeed how to replace the seat!

Does it have a make printed on it anywhere? Best bet would be for someone (your kids) to email a picture of it to a plumbers merchants or bathroom shop x

callmeadoctor · 14/07/2020 12:27

I think mine is similar so don't think they are uncommon (bathstore.com)

RandomMess · 14/07/2020 12:44

Ours has some buttons that you press to release it, not at all obvious but you need to detach it And take to proper bathroom place.

Jenjar · 14/07/2020 13:18

It's the detaching it that is proving the issue, there are no buttons and no visible fixings, just the hinge you see in the photo. Nothing else. All the 'how to remove a toilet seat' guides reference either removing with the push release buttons (which it doesnt have) or unscrewing from below with bolts (you can't access back of it as it's all enclosed).

Think we have identified a suitable seat now but until we can remove this we won't know.

OP posts:
RandomMess · 14/07/2020 13:19

I think on ours the whole hinge is the push release

Xiaoxiong · 14/07/2020 13:24

We need @PigletJohn on this thread - bet you anything they will be able to take one look at that seat and tell you how to detatch it.

Belowwreck · 14/07/2020 13:34

its your house, buy your own damn toilet seat.

Some people are just weird.

AGlassStaircase · 14/07/2020 13:34

Yanbu

You should have no guests until it is fixed as it’s unhygienic and also dangerous (slip hazard?) and I think it’s reasonable to expect them to fix it considering you are working fulltime and they are not and it’s mostly their bathroom.

I hope they manage to sort it out.

DameFanny · 14/07/2020 14:08

Is the hinge a lever-off cover for the actual mechanism? Can you get a flat blade under and prise up a little?

Also, keep sticking to your guns!

RandomMess · 14/07/2020 14:18

Ok ours has the button on the seat lid!

PigletJohn · 14/07/2020 14:20

Get a plumber in.

You can pay for her out of the rent they've being paying you.

if the WC is newish, look for the maker's name, because it is probably a proprietary accessory, specially designed to be incredibly expensive, and unobtainable after a couple of years.

PigletJohn · 14/07/2020 14:21

Brokenbog

Jenjar · 14/07/2020 14:27

The fitting is dead flush to the pan, can't get anything under it.

I am reluctant to pay to get anyone in because I'll potentially have to pay twice (once for them to come out and then second time to fit the replacement). Plus my experience with local tradesmen has been so poor I just don't trust anyone!

There's absolutely no manufacturer name anywhere; loo and seat are about 10 years old and predate the whole push release set thingy.

shop.brokenbog.com/twyfords-debut-toilet-seat-lid--hinges-in-mahogany-finish-other-finishes-available-137-p.asp How much? Is it made of gold?? OMG gonna have to work out what my toilet seat is Grin

callmeadoctor · 14/07/2020 14:28

Sorry OP I know thats not your toilet lid, just looking at prices!

PigletJohn · 14/07/2020 14:28

post them some photos

diddl · 14/07/2020 14:39

@Jenjar

Just to update, they've not done anything about it. Apparently the GF won't mind Hmm
You'd think he'd want to get it fixed for his GF.

Tbh if my boyfriend cba & would be happy with me using a broken toilet seat, I'd be quite pissed off!

Jenjar · 14/07/2020 14:42

We've found a possible (and reasonably priced) replacement from a small retailer (albeit same one for same price is also on Amazon) - I've emailed them with a photo to ask if they consider it will fit but I suspect they will say they can't tell without seeing the fixings, which we have no idea how to get to. I don't want to order it unless it will fit. But it's impossible to see how to get the current seat off.

OP posts:
DameFanny · 14/07/2020 14:43

Also OP, you've completely messed up my search history now, I hope you're proud Grin

PigletJohn · 14/07/2020 14:48

If it's dame fanny's one, the grubscrew will be accessible from the back, so out of sight. once undone, it might be quite easy.

Good spot.

callmeadoctor · 14/07/2020 14:48

Loving this thread, we all need to search, although I suspect DameFanny has found them Grin

Jenjar · 14/07/2020 14:53

DameFanny thank you - that is indeed the hinge, you're a star.

On closer examination (through zooming my phone camera as it's so tiny) I can see the teeny little bolt on the reverse of the hinge (in the picture where it says L & R).

However it is miniscule, no idea if we have an allen key small enough (plus then we have to try and fit said allen key in the tiny gap between back of seat and cistern!) But we do seem to be a step further forward at least.
