We are visiting my parents who have moved to Pickering. We are staying in their annexe for a week.
Pre-Covid, we had planned lots of days our - steam train, museums etc but now all are closed.
Can anyone please recommend things we can do in the surrounding area please? 2 children with us who are 13 if that’s relevant.
So far we have Whitby Abbey and Pickering Castle which are open,
Thanks

Dalby Forest?
Wharrem Percy?
Fountains Abbey?

Robin Hoods Bay or Staithes are nice to visit. Saltburn has a lovely beach. Eden Camp, though I don’t know if it is open. Flamingo Land?

Helmsley Castle? York for a wander? Van Gogh exhibition in St Mary’s is open for booking. Castle Howard grounds are open I think.

Scarborough Castle is now open ( pre-booking required).
Scarborough Sealife Centre also open again.
Scampston Hall gardens.
Yorkshire Water Park at Wykeham is partially open - walk or cycle round the lakes for free, paddle boarding.
Day on the beach at Scarborough - maybe rent a beach hut to make it special?
Beck Hole, Goathland.
Helmsley - just round the town, or ( another!) Castle.
Bird of Prey Centre at Helmsley is excellent. Flying demos.

Hutton le Hole is interesting.

Rievaux abbey near helmsley, lovely walk from there to it, fountains abbey and studley royal - great day out, horcums hole, huge hole in the landscape on the north york moors, whitby - lovely to wander round with all the little ginnels, indie shops, fish and chips, pannal park and the museum but parking can be horrendous ! Sandsend just down the road from whitby but again parking can be bad.

We often go to Dalby forest then Helmsley to the ice cream parlour. It’s amazing and probably back open now. It’s near the main car park.

BlossomBear · 12/07/2020 09:31

Hutton le Hole is beautiful , it has The Ryedale folk Museum which is open .

sunnyday1976 · 12/07/2020 09:34

When are you going? The NYMR opens (albeit with a different timetable) on 1 August.
Robin Hoods Bay, Helmsley, Dalby Forest, York and crabbing in Whitby. The Bar Walls are open in York, hire a little boat on the Ouse and the Viking Centre is open(ing). I don't think it'll be too long before the National Railway Museum opens. A walk at the Hole of Horcum for moorland views.
The ice cream shop at Helmsley (Ryeburn) is open - went yesterday and had gorgeous honeycomb ice cream!!

BlossomBear · 12/07/2020 09:35

Hutton Le Hole also has a really lovely Tea room Called The Barn ,the food is exceptional , they are open and are dog friendly.

minielise · 12/07/2020 09:40

Ingleton waterfalls walk is nice, wear swim stuff under your clothes because there are nice areas to swim.

Scarby9 · 12/07/2020 09:51

Just remembered that Flamingo Land has also reopened.
You are spoilt for choice.

annie987 · 12/07/2020 11:24

We’re coming home on 1st August typically so miss the opening date for a few places but plenty of ideas for things to do so thank you!
