I was chatting with my friend the other day, and i'm actually wondering why kids don;t learn this as standard?

In primary kids will be taught French (for example) but not BSL/Makaton? Baby Signing is around and about, seems shame it's not continued in schools.

I think it's a lovely idea but tough to fit into the curriculum, especially with many deaf children now using cochlear implants instead of BSL.

This,
Children are now being implanted at younger and younger ages. I think the youngest child we've had on my ward was about 6 months old.

You clearly have no idea of what school budgets look like now!

^this

Our budget has shrunk (in real terms) so much that we have had to cancel our French teacher, we have two teachers who are leaving (one retiring, one moving overseas) and not being replaced, three TA redundancies and reduced hours for some other support staff. Our budget is still in deficit....

Seems like a bit of a waste of time given how many people leave school jacking basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Not much to add to this but I’m an interpreter and most of my family sign basics which has meant they can communicate with my Deaf friends, even if they aren’t fluent. Dd2 manages Deaf club games with level 1, but obviously she’s picked up more via this.
