To ask what you think of Eastern Europeans living in the UK?

Bananasinpjs7 · 11/07/2020 13:19

I have lived in the UK for almost 10 years which is pretty much a 1/3 of my life. I never thought I’d stay this long but met my partner here and decided to build a career in an industry that we don’t really have in my home country... yet.
I’m trying my best... language wise I think I’m pretty fluent. English is the language I speak 95% of the time.
I try to fit in as much as possible, learn as much as I can about the UK to understand it’s history and culture...
But I feel extremely left out ... I feel people look at me and think ‘she is from eastern eu’ as if it has some sort of stigma. It feels like if you are from somewhere glamorous like France or Scandinavian countries you are much more accepted... I’m so tired of constantly feeling like this

No, you aren’t bullying me but you have attempted to silence anyone who has questioned whether or not FOM is all good.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 12/07/2020 18:39

Ermm no. I just pointed out that this "get a flat and benefits" straight off the plane isn't something that applied to every Eastern European. Which is pretty obvious as there are many countries in that area, that joined at different times under different rules and restrictions.

deragod · 12/07/2020 18:43

So at least you started to uncover what you were hiding. Again what particular country do you mean?

TazSyd · 12/07/2020 18:43

No one said it applied to every Eastern European. However not every Eastern European is self sufficient either. Denying that and attempting to silence anyone who questioned FOM is what got us to Brexit.

I’d suggest you have a look at which countries Brits tend to emigrate to. Losing the automatic right to emigrate to Eastern Europe isn’t something that concerns most British people.

TazSyd · 12/07/2020 18:44

@deragod

I don’t understand your riddles.

GrishainDisguise · 12/07/2020 18:47

Plenty of Eastern European countries worry that some of their towns are going to be empty within the next generation as the youth is gone.
This is only partly to do with immigration and partly to small birth rates.

  1. Why do you assume I don't know already and need to have a look?

2.I haven't actually expressed my opinion about FOM one way or the other.

  1. I replied to people about the whole "benefits and flats" thing, explaining that it's not always the case and it's not all sunshine and rainbows , easy access just because you're from EE.
  1. I also replied to a poster who claimed she doesn't like ANY ex USSR states . I might've been slightly dickish on that one.Grin

Where exactly have I bullied or tried to silence people? Or even commented on FOM?

Proudboomer · 12/07/2020 19:31

Grisham and part of the reason the birth rate is declining is that women of child barring age have gone to Western Europe.

mollypuss1 · 12/07/2020 20:42

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

GimmeAy what’s wrong with anything I’ve said? I’ve said I don’t agree with sweeping statements of positive or negative.
You’ve made your hatred of Russians very clear making you a xenophobe
mollypuss1 · 12/07/2020 20:43

Sorry, that was directed at @GimmeAy

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/07/2020 20:46

Yep not guilty on the Russian front.

GrishainDisguise · 12/07/2020 20:47

@Proudboomer Not exactly. Birth rate has been falling for at least two generations now in Eastern Europe. It must be education.
In the 80s I was the only one in our class who was an only child, everyone else had one sibling. I have 1 child.
I have 2 friends with 1 child, 1 friend with no child and 2 friends with 2 adopted children.

This is why I dispair for the UK. ENGLAND voted for Brexit, not Scotland, not Wales, not Northern Ireland, You English are so full of yourselves you can't see the bigger picture. Reading what I have read here this evening, bring yourselves to a different country and let's see how you think then!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/07/2020 21:16

This is why I dispair for the UK. ENGLAND voted for Brexit, not Scotland, not Wales, not Northern Ireland ...yes all part of the U.K. last time I checked.

Emeraldshamrock · 12/07/2020 21:25

Grisham and part of the reason the birth rate is declining is that women of child barring age have gone to Western Europe I don't believe that is the reason I think they're sensible. There is many EE families around here the majority have 1 DC possibly 2 with work it is very hard to get childcare plus high rent. Excluding the Roma they've lots of DC

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 12/07/2020 21:25

It must be education.

And for some countries access to birth control and abortions.

Welliesandpyjamas · 12/07/2020 21:31

My impressions of Eastern Europeans is as diverse as my impressions of any other 'group', and this is based on both living in an Eastern European country and living in a "shitty fenland market town" (as described by a PP upthread). Some people - of any background - are nice, and some people - of any background - are horrible. I have wonderful friends. Some of them happen to be Eastern European. When I lived in Eastern Europe, I was always the English woman, regardless of how well I learnt the language and adopted local life, and regardless of how many times I explained I was Welsh 🤷🏻‍♀️ In conclusion, my experiences lead me to find that humans are a funny lot and sometimes you bond and sometimes you don't.

Wow, you’re a special kind of unpleasant.

You’re sweeping generalisation of ‘us English’ says more about than us.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/07/2020 21:44

Also IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 Wales voted to leave!!!

Emeraldshamrock · 12/07/2020 21:50

In Poland there isn't government support to enable you to have many DC you are expected to work, the setup sounds well run, my friend was born to a single mother but her DM was provided with child care to work not benefits to stay at home.
Similarly to their pension if you haven't contributed through employment then there is no pension pot for you.

InOutofmymind · 12/07/2020 22:43

The ex Soviet states were Soviet for only about 30 or 40 years, hardly enough to make them so different?
Personally the EE i know are lovely wam people.

Also, as their economies have improved, many are returning home, after all you wouldn't stay in the traffic congested BoJo run UK if you had a choice.

WhatifIfeellikeacat · 12/07/2020 22:52

Outofmymind, Soviet Union existed for 69 years and before that it was shit as well.

DonutCone · 12/07/2020 23:04

@inoutofmymind I have honestly never known a Polish person to return to Poland once they have settled in the UK.

All the figures I've set have suggested to decrease in Polish people in the UK is because they have taken UK citizenship.

Actually Wales voted for Brexit.

Personally I dislike saying a whole area voted for or against. Plenty of English and Welsh voted Remain and a sizeable proportion of Scots and Northern Irish voted Leave.

The beauty of the referendum (regardless of whether we like the result or not) was that it gave a voice to those with different views to the majority in their constituency. Individual votes counted.
