To ask what you think of Eastern Europeans living in the UK?

Bananasinpjs7 · 11/07/2020 13:19

I have lived in the UK for almost 10 years which is pretty much a 1/3 of my life. I never thought I’d stay this long but met my partner here and decided to build a career in an industry that we don’t really have in my home country... yet.
I’m trying my best... language wise I think I’m pretty fluent. English is the language I speak 95% of the time.
I try to fit in as much as possible, learn as much as I can about the UK to understand it’s history and culture...
But I feel extremely left out ... I feel people look at me and think ‘she is from eastern eu’ as if it has some sort of stigma. It feels like if you are from somewhere glamorous like France or Scandinavian countries you are much more accepted... I’m so tired of constantly feeling like this

@GimmeAy

I suppose I'm saying that I don't like the former Communist States much. Former members of the USSR. They're just different.
Ofc they're bloody different! They've had years of being controlled where they work, where they can live, how much they can spend, who they can marry, what they can watch, what they can buy, people disappearing in the night, listening stations next door, barely any contraception, abortions made illegal, water, electricity and food rationed, very little access to the outside world etc.

Think you'd be any better?

Yes but if your post doesn’t suit deragod’s position of Eastern Europeans = good and British = bad then you are a racist oh I know the British are such racist Chavs and everyone foreign is so cultured and hard working Hmm....people are people and prefer a system which doesn’t let scumbags in automatically ....sadly you can’t ship out born and bred scumbags

LazyFace · 12/07/2020 15:46

ComeOnBaby: Can I steal your 'shitty toilets are better than people' comment? This could be my new ethos for any cleaning related work. Grin

People are fair and most would prefer a system that means we can stop known criminals at the border and ban them from entry. Try getting a visa for entry into Canada, Australia, NZ, USA with a criminal record.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 12/07/2020 16:07

I think we find it hard to warm to people who find it hard to warm to us

I have to admit I'm not feeling particularly warm towards you, but that's because of your comments not because I was born under a communist regime.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/07/2020 16:13

GimmeAy what’s wrong with anything I’ve said? I’ve said I don’t agree with sweeping statements of positive or negative.

deragod · 12/07/2020 16:41

@TazSyd @OnlyFoolsnMothers why so nervous.

Oh, I don't think that only people who work more than 20hrs a week are worthy. Don't project your views on me. Wink

TazSyd · 12/07/2020 16:47

@deragod

I can’t speak for @OnlyFoolsnMothers but I’m not nervous about anything.

As from 31st December, we’ll have stricter border checks in place, just like other countries do.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/07/2020 16:54

What about nervous?

TazSyd · 12/07/2020 17:07

@deragod

You do realise that Brexit doesn’t mean a ban on all EU citizens coming here, don’t you?

Brexit does mean that we’ll be able to stop EU citizens who are criminals from entering (not sure why you think we should be letting foreign criminals in, in the first place?).

Brexit also means that EU citizens who are able to prove they can support themselves will also be welcome to come and live and work here, just like citizens from other countries are.

Proudboomer · 12/07/2020 17:30

FOM has had a real impact on some communities and I am not talking about the ones in the uk.
Communities particularly rural ones where every family has several members working elsewhere in Europe. Whole families have been fragmented often leaving children and older family members at home and reliant on money being sent home.
Plenty of jobs go unfilled as the wages are poor and more can be earned working unskilled jobs in Europe. Agencies have sprung up in places like Romania bring in workers who are often exploited. Left owing the agency for their travel, stuck in substandard housing which they are ripped off for and working long hours for minimum wage.
Romania And others have blamed FOM for what they call their brain drain as they lose their skilled workers to Western Europe and they are not the only country who resent the west for stealing their youth As they are not in a position to compete financially with the west.

Plenty of Eastern European countries worry that some of their towns are going to be empty within the next generation as the youth is gone.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 12/07/2020 17:43

Nah, @Proudboomer . Haven't you heard? We all get flats ,benefits and loans immediately after getting off a plane.Grin

TazSyd · 12/07/2020 17:49

@ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble

Your disdain for this country and citizens is apparent from your posts. Why do you choose to live here?

Theskyisblueithink · 12/07/2020 17:50

@Proudboomer
I heard some countries, (including I think Poland?) are trying to entice people back. Offering tax breaks and other incentives. They need healthy working age people.
It's one thing people travelling for pleasure or adventure. Quite another to be forced to do so out of desperation, because the economic situation was/is so dire in your own country. The only people benefiting from that are those who exploit. People forced to work and live in awful conditions. We're seeing the conseqences with the corona outbreaks in sweatshop factories and meat plants.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 12/07/2020 18:04

@TazSyd seriously? That's what you got from my posts?

If there's any disdain, it's not for the country or the people. It's for the system that sets people up to be exploited,used and abused. A system that knew full well what these "agencies" were up to. A system that meant that when I ended up sexually assaulted at work , got fired for not putting up with it, got my wages kept I had no way to fight back.

So yeah I have a certain disdain for the system. I also don't like how it treats other vulnerable people old,poor,disabled etc.

DonutCone · 12/07/2020 18:27

So in my opinion EE’s are seen as doing low skilled jobs and taking out more than they put in, especially those who come with young families. a German, in contrast, would be perceived as being a more high skilled, high earning immigrant, as Germans are VERY unlikely to leave Germany to be a cleaner or carer in the UK. So fundamentally the attitudes to immigrants are based on if they are seen as drains or assets.

TazSyd · 12/07/2020 18:28

@ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble

You do realise that attempting to bully and silence those who wanted to have an open conversation about the pros and cons of FOM resulted in Brexit?

Brexit doesn’t affect my right to live and work here. In fact it doesn’t affect me at all really. If I have to get a visa to go to the EU on holiday, I’ll just go elsewhere. Most Brits don’t want to emigrate to Eastern Europe, they’d rather go to Aus, NZ, Canada, USA.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 12/07/2020 18:31

Now I'm bullying you?

Fuck me...
