To think the UK is sleep walking into an economic disaster

Covid is obviously doing significant economic damage and harm. The UK public seem to have not embraced mask wearing as a prevention to spread meaning further outbreaks are likely as the virus lingers in the air according to scientists.

On top of this Govt stimulus seems to be too small for the crisis that we face despite promises of a new deal. The stamp duty cut appears to be a blatant attempt at keeping house prices artificially high when a correction is needed especially in the South East.

A transition agreement extension is now impossible and little progress has been made on trade talks with the European Union. Regardless of your stance on Brexit it appears that a No deal scenario would create economic harm to some degree in the short term.

So you have a severe recession that could get worse with a no deal cherry on top, whilst being led by a govt that hasn't exactly proved its competence in recent months.

Aibu to think we should run for the hills?

WE most certainly didn’t vote for this shambles of a government or Brexit. I most definitely didn’t. Those who did can own it, it’s fuck all to do with me

The nation voted for Brexit and, on a constituency basis, the vast majority voted for Johnson.

I don't like it any more than you do but until the nation chooses differently, we are stuck with the Tories and an isolationist european policy.

Many of us in Scotland have had enough of this particularly English shitshow and we're heading for the emergency exit.

I genuinely believe that we will be voting for the UK to split within the next year. We have been forced to choose our favourite union as apparently we can't have two at once these days - most of us will choose the EU over the UK.

I live in another EU country. I bought an item for my daughter's birthday from the US last week. Something special that I couldn't find anywhere else. I've just received the import bill. With tax and charges it's almost £60 for a £90 item. Shock

We do most of our online shopping with UK companies. That'll all be stopping once no deal brexit hits. M&S, Tesco, Next, Amazon, Cadbury's, Lakeland, Debenhams, John Lewis, Boots, Asda, Top Shop, Simply Be to name a few. All of them sell to customers in the EU online and I can't see anyone wanting to pay an extra 60% on top of what they currently pay.

I think she means £60 fees for a £90 item, i.e. £150 total.

Rights of UK citizens in the EU will vary by country and depend on what the UK offers their citizens. If it's not reciprocal there will be no special treatment.

No, the import bill was for £60. That's how much we had to pay on top of the £90 including delivery we paid for the item. £150 for a feckin hoodie.

I paid £20 customs for a blanket from Grandma in the US once. She forgot to tick the "gift" declaration.

Don't worry OP.

Think of all the single people who have died from COVD 19 who's ripening pension pots will now go into the Governments pockets because they haven't got a spouse, civil partner or dependent child.

That might soften your economic woes for a bit.

So at last we have a Brexit thread - no Brexity stuff going on in the Brexit Board - mostly CV19 related; hardly surprising as that does appear to be a quite important thing really.

It does look pretty likely that CV19 will have lots of detrimental impacts, globally, including the UK.

Meanwhile, Brexit looms and negotiations continue, albeit not too well and not much negotiated yet. Although there is still enough time so I wouldn't place a bet on No Deal just yet.

I don't think many are sleepwalking to their doom - most are facing doom as their immediate possibility.

Maybe, the UK exiting the EU during an economic crisis caused by a global pandemic, might not be the best time to do so. Or, it might actually be the best time to do it.

I've no crystal ball.

Corbyn and Swinford should NEVER have agreed to December's GE

Dam straight, the people should not be allowed a say, its not like we live in a democracy or anything Confused

Democracy should only be allowed when it elects someone that agrees with your opinions. Otherwise it should be banned.

We don’t live in a democracy. We live in a kingdom ruled by a monarch, we don’t have a real constitution, the upper house of our parliament is unelected and the majority of our lower house is full of people who represent the wealthy elite in the UK.

Merely casting a ballot doesn’t mean you live in a democracy - People vote in Russia and the majority of them believe they live in a democracy.

This.

Something like 7% of people have a private education, but overall 29% of MPs, including about 45% of Tory MPs. Two thirds of the Cabinet are privately educated.

I have nothing not much against private schools, I worked in one, but they are not representative of the rest of the UK population. MPs are supposed to represent their constituents.

It's not really a democracy when there's only two parties that have a hope of winning and the wealthy elite sponsor parties that serve their needs. Our media is also very biased and owned by people with massive influence in politics. It makes a mockery of the whole thing.

And a majority of people did not vote for this government. First post the post is unfair but the parties like it as it gives them a unfair chance of winning.

Less than 30% of people in this country voted for the current tory government. The vast majority voted other ways but under first post the post, the tories were greatly successful and hence are first past the post greatest champions, when others have tried to bring in different fairer systems.

The way the candidates are put forward is unfair in many areas with lots of constituencies having only 2 choices. Not all parties are available in all areas and many ballot papers are spoilt because of this.

We really don't. We don't want our standards eroded to keep Britain happy. You may want inferior cheap shit from China and the US but we don't. We don't want you having access to our market without having to follow the rules. You've made your own cake. Eat that instead of trying to take a bite out of ours.

@Charlottejbt

which hills are we supposed to run to ?

The Vosges and the Jura are nice this time of year. I'm moving our first van load of stuff to eastern France on Tuesday. We Brits all have until the end of the year to move to Europe and thus keep some of our rights under the Withdrawal Agreement - better start packing, I say.

yes we can leave all the low income chuff behind too as they'll never have the means to just piss off to France, oh dear.

yes, I shall just have a chat with DP and see what we can do.
can we take our cleaners and nannies with us?
