Why is The North seen as backward and undesirable?

Sibsmum · 10/07/2020 13:26

Can't understand why The North, seems to get looked down on , except when someone wants a holiday home somewhere pretty, or a big house for cheaper prices.
There are Universities, theatres, good schools, roads that aren't clogged all the time( and some that are...)spectacular scenery... So why is there still a perception that somehow The North is 'less' everything than the South?

Erm @BankofNook London did NOT vote leave. Much of the rest of the country IS quite racist 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷🏿‍♀️

Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 22:45

No I think there must be some special flavourless catering cheese esp for chips at the cash 'n' carry....

BankofNook · 10/07/2020 22:46

Dixons! I'm hungover today and I could really use a Dixons breakfast bun but our nearest one is still closed.

Sorry for all the food talk, I've hit the "could eat my own arm" stage of hangover recovery.

There is more to the South than just London, other areas of the South did vote leave and much of the rest of the country is not racist.

PS: Newcastle voted Remain.

I dare you to make chips and cover them in gravy and EAT THEM
mollypuss1 · 10/07/2020 22:49

@BankofNook

Do chippies elsewhere do parmos? Or chips, garlic sauce, and cheese all mixed together?
I’ve only seen Parmos in Teeside.

You can get chips, garlic sauce and cheese in Blackpool. Dunno if it’s a thing here but I’ve had it from the local takeaway before and they didn’t seem to think it was odd when I ordered it.

Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 22:51

I will definitely do that next time I have chips.
But you have to promise that you will put a gherkin on the side next time u have chips...Grin

Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 22:51

Whatever is a 'parmo'?

BankofNook · 10/07/2020 22:57

A parmo is a chicken breast, flattened, covered in breadcrumbs and then deep fried. Its then covered in bechamel sauce and cheese and grilled to melt the cheese. Loads of takeaways here do them (Northumberland) but Teeside claims the original. There are variations on it with barbecue sauce or bolognese instead of bechamel and things added like pepperoni or jalapenos.

Tollergirl · 10/07/2020 22:59

@Destroyedpeople - so nice to hear someone else calling them "wallies" - I'm a north Londoner now living in Cornwall and my DC and DP think it's something I made up! We always used to ask for a couple of wallies with our fish and chips when I was young!

Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 22:59

Oh that does sound tasty...in london the Italian sandwich shops sell similar.
Or they did .....

I'd have to buy some first 😂
Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 23:01

Hah north London high five!
I think 'wally' is v geographically specific term......

Preparefortheflaming · 10/07/2020 23:02

The Northerners are just as judgemental about Down South! I’ve got northern family but am a southerner. We are chalk and cheese and my northern family are often quite rude about southerners! It’s like they don’t remember that’s where I am from 😆

Preparefortheflaming · 10/07/2020 23:03

Also I’m afraid it is very different up north. It’s actually like another planet!

Not all of “The Northerners” are judgemental and I suspect your basing your view of “The Northerners” solely on your experiences with your family.

Thankfully we don’t have one collective Northern mind.

Pixxie7 · 10/07/2020 23:18

I don’t think it’s looked down on, I certainly don’t but more that due to years of poor investment it is not perceived of such a fun place to live particularly amongst the youngsters.

Turkeydrumstick · 10/07/2020 23:47

I miss parmos so much! I don’t understand why every takeaway doesn’t do them,
Also red salt should be on every cheesy chip, first time I went outside of Preston and asked for red salt on my chips and I’m sure he thought I was asking for drugs.

Ginfordinner · 10/07/2020 23:57

That simply isn't true of most northern cities with universities. Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle spring to mind as being (under normal circumstances) lively and buzzing places with loads to do. They simply aren't as big as London, that's all.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 11/07/2020 00:03

I'm 'down south'

My local chip shop does neither gravy or gherkins. And their curry sauce is shit. I've definitely had chips and gravy though. No idea who taught me that combo! (Also my phone kept changing 'chips' to 'child'. I have never eaten child and gravy! they are better with bbq sauce )
All the KFCs in my town (we have about 4) do gravy. I think KFC gravy contains crack.

And they're all in the South. From where I'm sitting - and I am no where near the 'top' of the mainland, Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool are all nearer London than they are to my house.

You're all southerners.

dreamingmama · 11/07/2020 00:15

The only thing I miss about the north is

Real chippy chips and gravy.

I once asked a chippy in twickenham if they did curry sauce, I think he actually put korma in the tub.
It's just not the same

Apart from that.
I don't miss nothing family 🤫

dreamingmama · 11/07/2020 00:15

Except my family GrinGrinWink

jennytheonionslayer · 11/07/2020 00:39

As far as where the north begins, if you look at a map and draw a box around the M25, anything outside the M25 to the west is Cornwall, anything outside and to the east is Norfolk, Anything South is Brighton and the bit outside to the north is upnorthshire.

Upnorthshire is a strange and cold place full of whippets and ferrets and which goes all of the way to Jockland and the highlands.

KingOfDogShite
It’s a ploy by northerners to stop southerners moving there.

You took the words right out of my mouth.
