Why is The North seen as backward and undesirable?

Can't understand why The North, seems to get looked down on , except when someone wants a holiday home somewhere pretty, or a big house for cheaper prices.
There are Universities, theatres, good schools, roads that aren't clogged all the time( and some that are...)spectacular scenery... So why is there still a perception that somehow The North is 'less' everything than the South?

In fact it says 'Hatfield and the North '...Grin

I must say that as a southerner I have had some attitude and assumptions made by northerners.
Most recently some girl on a course I was doing started on about 'soft spoilt southerners'....and about hiw 'ignorant' people from the south were....in a really pointed way.

I wouldn't have minded only it turned out she was living rent free in her granny's massive annexe!

Also I am older so thought I had passed the age for such non sense.

Silly cow.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/07/2020 22:22

Can someone of the South please confirm if the absence of gravy in your chip shops is a truth or a horrific lie designed to keep people away?

Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 22:23

Then once when I was young I was sitting on one of the narrow benches on James St Covent Garden with my back to the crowd. There had been a big match on. Some northerner grabbed my azz really hard with both hands and squeezed and then went off laughing g with his mates .
I jumped up and shouted something at him...and he called me a...
'Tory voting southern bastard'....

So you know. ...there are reasons why one sees anywhere north of Walsall as a bit iffy.

Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 22:25

It's true we have no gravy....
We do have gherkins though....otherwise known as 'wallies'

SleepingStandingUp · 10/07/2020 22:25

Glad to hear Walsall isn't iffy 😂😂😂

But why would they do that to you? Are southerners being punished like women suffer period pains cos of Eve
Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 22:28

Grinoh it probably is proper iffy but one has to draw the line somewhere....

Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 22:29

Wait...what? No gherkins?

mollypuss1 · 10/07/2020 22:34

I heard that there’s no gravy in KFC in that London. That’s just sacrilegious if true.

BankofNook · 10/07/2020 22:34

Definitely no gherkins. Why would you put gherkins on your chips!?

SleepingStandingUp · 10/07/2020 22:36

Why would a chippy have gerkins. We have gravy, them up North have cheese and gravy Thry win.

God I want chips, cheese and gravy now

BankofNook · 10/07/2020 22:36

Southern Gregg's don't sell ham and pease pudding stotties.

If it doesn't have KFC gravy is it even really a KFC?

Not Midland ones tbf
Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 22:37

A gherkin is the perfect side dish!
Gravy is just wrong. Doesn't it drip all over the place?

BankofNook · 10/07/2020 22:38

Northern gravy doesn't drop because its thick enough to stand a spoon up in it.

BankofNook · 10/07/2020 22:38

*drip

Stotties are the food of the Gods but pease pudding is just wrong.

What like over your food or over the floor? yes to the former, no to the later. It's only like having gravy on your roast but with chips and cheese instead

I'm sure we had gravy in the Tower of London KFC. Or maybe I imagined it. They charged money to use the (rather minging) toilets, it was a whole scandal.

BankofNook · 10/07/2020 22:41

Nooooo! Stottie, butter, big slices of ham, thick spread of pease pudding. Heaven on bread.

Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 22:42

I just can't imagine gravy on chips....Sorry.

Here in Wales where I live now they insist on throwing a pile of tasteless stretchy cheese over their chips....weirdos.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/07/2020 22:43

Tasteless stretchy cheese? Don't they use normal grated cheese?

My DH would agree with you but I cannot stomach it. Whenever I go to Newcastle I have to bring him a tub back and it HAS to come from Dixon’s the Pork Butchers.
BankofNook · 10/07/2020 22:44

Do chippies elsewhere do parmos? Or chips, garlic sauce, and cheese all mixed together?
