Why is The North seen as backward and undesirable?

Sibsmum · 10/07/2020 13:26

Can't understand why The North, seems to get looked down on , except when someone wants a holiday home somewhere pretty, or a big house for cheaper prices.
There are Universities, theatres, good schools, roads that aren't clogged all the time( and some that are...)spectacular scenery... So why is there still a perception that somehow The North is 'less' everything than the South?

@Devlesko I really don't agree that is 'friendliness', it's just chatiness. I am from about as north as you can get without being in Scotland, and I absolutely HATE being talked to by people I don't know on a bus, at a bus stop, in a queue, etc. I would never ever start up a conversation with someone I don't know if there wasn't a reason for it.

Yet I manage to be perfectly friendly. I'm just not chatty.

InstantMango · 12/07/2020 15:17

Chips should be crispy, golden and fluffy on the inside, sea salted not soggy and covered in gloop.
The thought of it makes me heave.
Do people really have fish, chips and gravy?

Tomato ketchup with bacon.
I think it's bit of a myth that people up north chat on buses and southerners don't.
I didn't really come across it, they sat there on their phones, listening to music, reading as they do everywhere.
Every where I've lived it's usual to thank the driver as you get off , ask if people need help.
Someone always jumps up where ever you are in the UK.

c0co · 12/07/2020 15:18

I think part of “friendliness” though, is having some respect and actually gauging whether you are possibly making someone a little uncomfortable / awkward.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t find people in the North more friendly at all because I find that, often, on public transport, they are shouting at you, rather than talking to you. It can be a little obtuse and sometimes bordering on rude, especially if they’ve been drinking or have bad hygiene, etc. Also, the conversation can be very inane and repetitive.

I find people in London perfectly polite and pleasant but they don’t need to shout at you - “Alright luv.... Smile it might never happen “ yadda yadda or make “hilarious” jokes for attention. They just let you go about in peace.

InstantMango · 12/07/2020 15:21

I agree with sage
People who yap and yap usually just like the sound of their own voice ,its nothing to do with being friendly.

Malbecfan · 12/07/2020 15:25

I'm from the north, have lived in the SW for 22 years and cannot wait to sell up & move back north again. My dad is still based there and when we visit, my southern-born DDs always comment on how kind and friendly people are. I hate the entitled people here who think they are a cut above just because they live here. They aren't; many are narrow-minded rude tossers who have no clue how to drive or behave properly.

Anyway, the football is infinitely better in the NW of England than any other part of the country... Wink

c0co · 12/07/2020 15:28

Why would the people in the SE think they’re better then everyone else “just because” they live in the SW? Grin Based on what exactly? What are you on about?

c0co · 12/07/2020 15:31

People in the SW not SE!! (Through I’m sure you have something to say about the SE too) Grin

Wolfgirrl · 12/07/2020 15:33

I am from the SW. I can confirm that we are indeed a cut above the rest.

EasternDailyStress · 12/07/2020 15:36

I live in the East, and we don't ever get a mention in these debates!

I think "The North" is not favoured, mainly because of the weather. I think there are also a lot of rural areas, and the it is less densely populated than the South, therefore feels more remote.

InstantMango · 12/07/2020 15:37

I think it's chips on shoulders time @c0co
No gravy Grin

If you think everyone else is entitled, a twat blah blah it's usually your problem.
Time to stop generalising negatively about whole areas and look for the good in people.

x2boys · 12/07/2020 15:44

I dont think most people would have gravy on their fish? Just their chips ,I however do like it on both particularly when it soaks into the batter but that's just a peculiarity of mine I also like curry sauce.on my fish and chips ,don't knock what you have,nt tried😂

x2boys · 12/07/2020 15:48

The North feels more remoteConfusedit depends where you live in the North I can confirm living on the edge of a,large town in a working class suburban area it's anything but remote!

Gravy on chips is amazing. In fact, when I was at secondary school we often got chips with cheese & gravy. Don't knock it until you've tried it. 😉
x2boys · 12/07/2020 15:52

I quite agree @Morsmodre, not sure why you have quoted meConfused

blosstree · 12/07/2020 16:01

@InstantMango it's not a myth! I've lived both north and south.

InstantMango · 12/07/2020 16:55
@InstantMango it's not a myth! I've lived both north and south.
So have I !
People didn't just randomly chat in either place only if they one someone.

Do you mean just chips with gravy, curry sauce, cheese Mors
I've never seen anyone here having just chips, always fish and chips, scaampi and chips etc
I can see that just chips might need something extra.

InstantMango · 12/07/2020 16:55

Do people really have fish, chips and gravy?

I usually have curry sauce with my fish, when I get fish I get cod bites rather than tail end and I jumble them up with chips before pouring curry sauce over them.

Mushy peas are also acceptable with fish.

Some people do have gravy though.

Do they do chippy butty down South? Because chip butty splash is popular here. It's a chip butty with a splash of curry, gravy, or peas so it all sinks into the bread. Mushy, soggy deliciousness. Then with batter added so you get a bit of crunch in with the soggy.

Red sauce on a fry up, DH prefers brown, both like Hendersons Relish on our beans. No black pudding because its rank, DH prefers Lorne sausage to sausage shaped sausages, and I like a slice of fried bread.

The North starts at Hull? There is 120 miles worth of "south" between me and Hull.

x2boys · 12/07/2020 17:16

Pie or pastie barms are also favourites near me 😂

Hingeandbracket · 12/07/2020 17:20

Why is The North seen as backward and undesirable?
Because some people are ignorant twats. This can be an advantage though.

Chip butty is always homemade.

My DF would take white crusty bread, an inch of butter, fill with hot chips and salt.
It's seen as an older persons thing here and my late DM hated him doing it Grin

I think I'm just not a fan of anything soggy as none of the chip butty combos appeal.

I'm very near the coast so the fish is bit is the appeal and everyone has their favourite.

SleepingStandingUp · 12/07/2020 18:48

Do people really have fish, chips and gravy? only the weird.
Chinese curry sauce on anything battered
Gravy on pie or sausage OR plain chips.

Chippies here don't do butties or cheese, but agree homemade chip butty is amazing. Or chips in a cheese butty.

We do have orange chips though

TazSyd · 12/07/2020 18:50

Yep, I get my gravy/curry sauce/mushy peas in a separate container as I like them in chips but not the fish.

Shane dinner’s already on. I fancy a chippy tea now Smile.

c0co · 12/07/2020 18:52

We don’t have a chip shop. I don’t think I’ve had fish and chips since 2006 when we moved house and it was the only thing going.

It’s all Açai bowls, sushi, Thai, poke and supergreen smoothies round here. Grin

I have literally never seen gravy on chips. Not joking. Sounds vile to be fair.
