How to tax car without a valid V5

Arrgh, have massively cocked up. Posting here for traffic.

SORNED car as we weren't using it during lockdown at all and it's parked on our drive. We are moving house on Monday to a London borough, and in order to get a parking permit I needed to change the address on the V5, so we could apply for one on Monday.

DVLA have been incredibly efficient and obviously issued the V5, cancelling the old one in the process. The trouble is it will have been sent to the new address (no-one currently living there so it will be safe) but I need to re-tax the car in order to drive it to the new address on Monday.

Just tried to do it online and it won't let me as I don't have the new number of the V5 and no way to get it until we get the keys on Monday.

What can I do? If I take the old one to the post office and explain will they be able to tax it for me then. I can't afford a taxi to drive all the way there and back for me to pick it up (round trip is 60 miles). I really don't want to go on public transport as I'm in a high risk category.

I thought I'd been really efficient so I didn't get a parking fine and now I've really cocked up.

AIBU to wish things would go a bit more smoothly for me. So stressed with the move and this is the last straw.

Something like this happened to me. I didn't have the V5 but if I remember right, I taxed it through the post office and they had a form I had to complete.

Mydiary · 09/07/2020 20:48

V62 form?

Cooper88 · 09/07/2020 20:50

I had a similar thing this week, go to the post office and they will be able to sort it all out for you.

leolion1 · 09/07/2020 21:04

A V62 form will generate a new logbook and cost you £25.
The post office should be able to tax it on the old logbook though.

Pheasantplucker2 · 09/07/2020 21:41

Thanks so much, post office it is first thing in the morning. I really hope they can do it on the old one as I don't have the spare cash for £25 really. Thanks for your help

I thought the code lived with the car? V5 has same code throughout its life? Have you got the green slip? V5c I think? Post office enter the same code.

Also I would call dela, not post office.

19lottie82 · 09/07/2020 23:40

Yes, go to the post office, fill out a form for a new V5 And when you hand it over and pay the fee, you can tax it at the same time.

@SepticTankYank
DVLA phonelines are open only to keyworkers.

NaughtyLittleElf · 13/07/2020 20:06

I phoned them and did it over the phone with the car VIN number and confirmation of a lot details about the car and me, the phone lines are open for everyone.

SepticTankYank · 13/07/2020 21:50

@Realitybites21 useless as ever then. Hmm

@NaughtyLittleElf
When did you call?

I’ve been trying daily for 3 weeks and ended up going to the Post Office on Friday this week just gone because the landline told me they’re still only dealing with keyworkers.

Someone I know has had to get a lawyer involved with them this week because DVLA lost their original DWP PIP paperwork, NOT sent back the V5 but tried to charge them £25 for a replacement and returned a cheque for an incorrect amount regarding Road Fund License. (A fraction of the owed amount)

Given this is a government department, the GDPR breaches & lack of professionalism seem to be quite significant.

I called them two weeks ago, as soon as they opened in the morning, my call was answered within a couple of rings. I had no V5 or change of ownership document but it was no problem because the car is registered in my name and at my address. They ordered me a new V5 at the same time which came about a week later.

I've been trying to get a new v5 since MArch!!!

What time are they open?

Realitybites21 · 14/07/2020 18:29

On another ongoing DVLA thread in ‘Chat’ DVLA phonelines aren’t open, which ties in with what I have said.....?
