To make a list for my cleaner

I have had a cleaner for around 5 months now (including lockdown period when she did not attend).

She is average and I can live with that. But her ability to take on instructions is non existent. Its small things that sum up and absolutely grate on me.

I.e. where the small plates and where the large plates go, where my toothbrush and toothpaste go (she rearranges every time), which cloths to use and which not (entirely different cupboard for my own purposes) and so on. I have mentioned some of these things to her and nothing sticks. Nothing. Nada.

AIBU to create a list for that for about 10-15 items?

I feel completely stupid to contemplate a list as I feel it would be insulting to her, but I start to resent her and I feel I need to do something to get her to do it the way I want it. I just don't get why she does some of those things.

Why accept a cleaner who isn’t good?

Hipposcape · 09/07/2020 19:38

Honestly, I'd just get a competent cleaner. It's not hard to follow instructions but some people really struggle. In my experience, those who can't follow spoke instructions also don't follow written ones.

Get a different cleaner

I don't know. I know her a bit and I would trust her with my keys once I go back to the office. Not easy to achieve for me.

I'd do the list in a friendly way, trusting a cleaner is a huge thing and if you can get the instructions across in a non-confrontational way it'll help both of you. You are paying after all!

Maybe she has poor executive functioning skills? Perhaps photos of the relevant things would help (e.g. the plates and toothbrushes in the correct places).
