IWork for a council in E England. NEw boss has just emailed to say that she has checked my time sheets - on a couple of days last month i have written start time as 8am. ( work from home since covid) I did not however send in my 'log on' email till 8.01. I am being asked to go back and amend my time sheet.
Wtf?? Do I say don't be ridiculous that is a complete waste of taxpayer money or do I just play along? Worth saying that I often work a bit over and don't log this as feel it's petty to put for example 5.07 on a time sheet. Wwyd? Aibu to think jesus get a bloody life??

If you sent it at 8:01 then obviously you must have logged on before that seeing as it can take a few minutes to log on! How nitpicky. Even if you’re paid by the hour surely one minute wouldn’t affect that.

Make a point of logging off at 17:01!!!

I'd just say "Oops, thanks for the heads up - will change it now" and then do a massive eye roll to myself and be glad that they've let me know they're one to watch for pettiness in the future.

Your new boss is incompetent, but the point about arguing with idiots is very true. You might as well log everything super precisely than argue about it, just make sure that other people have to do the same, I.e. that this boss isn't being sexist/racist etc.

Be as petty as her. Time how long it takes you to switch on your computer, fire up your emails, send one to yourself AND receive it. Just because she received it at 8.01 doesn't mean it was sent at 8.01!

Hopefully it will take more than a minute to do that so you can tell her sweetly that you're actually logging on at 7.59, and then you can adjust your timesheet accordingly

Utterly ridiculous of them. Make sure you do your timesheet at the exact time (starting and ending), keep her email so that if anyone mentions it you can say you are only doing what you have been asked to do.

A lot of companies have to ask staff to log on to show they are working minesabottle because tbh some workers will start and finish whenever they feel like it, leaving others to pick up the slack. We’ve had to introduce similar at our place.

Update the start time but update the finish times too if you can see what they are e.g. if you can see you sent an email at 5:03 then you know it's after that.

Agree check the time it says your email was sent on your sent items.

Also send your "log on" email and then go get a coffee/brush your teeth or something just for your own small act of rebellion

I could not work for people like that, it would drive me to distraction. Micromanagement at it's absolute worst, but yes. I'd start logging 5.07 exactly as my finish time, if they want to play it like that.

It takes more than a minute to log in especially from home - the boss is being a prick. I bet she wouldn’t complain if OP’s timesheet showed she logged off after her usual finishing time! Half an hour, say, is taking the piss; one minute really isn’t. It’s probably taken me longer than that to type this!

But in all seriousness, track all your time, switch off completely out of work hours, and don't give an bloody inch.

If your manager is new to local authority, they could genuinely be absolutely lost - there is no onboarding or handover (at least I've never seen one) - you are expected to pick up and run.

Is there a peer you could sound out? This isn't a normal management ask....

YANBU, unless it’s a timesheet claim for an external funder? External auditors can be an absolute nightmare if they find the tiniest fault, can open up a massive can of worms, ridiculous yes but I’ve seen it happen over tiny, clear mistakes.
