To feel disheartened about not losing weight but losing inches/sizes

Fressia123 · 09/07/2020 09:58

I'm 8 months pp. I actually like how I look (I'm a size 8). I train five days a week and I'm conscious about how I eat. In two weeks I've lost a bit more than half a pound. (I've been consistently following my plan for 8-9 weeks now). I've lost a decent amount of inches (started as a large 10) and my waist is now around 27in. Yet I'm still classified as overweight. You can see my muscle tone and all of that and I know I'm healthy and again I think I'm more or less the size I want to be but staying overweight is starting to get to me.

Nhs website asks for ethnicity in calculating bmi. For example, Asian ethnicity comes up as needing to be a lower weight than white ethnicity. I think it's due to genetic dosposition for certain illnesses and maybe due to frame/bone density?

Fressia123 · 09/07/2020 14:22

I'm classified as "other" . Genetically we're definitely more predisposed to cardiovascular conditions

If you're concerned about your health OP look for other indicators like blood pressure, cholesterol etc rather than BMI.

GlottalStrop · 09/07/2020 14:31

BMI is a perfectly effective gauge for most people's weight and size. The minority who gain and maintain muscle regularly through training and/or have a natural predisposition to it are indeed the minority.

The rest are sailing down that river in Egypt.

Pleasestoprainingnow · 09/07/2020 14:37

@PhoneLock

Have you estimated your body fart percentage?
😂🤣😂

Thank you, I desperately needed a laugh

Pleasestoprainingnow · 09/07/2020 14:44
I have scales like these too. Excellent for tracking weight with the app.
TheFlis12345 · 09/07/2020 14:55

I think your scales are off as well, I am 8 inches taller than you, and nearly 6kg lighter but am a size 10. Unless you have body builder levels of muscle it doesn’t add up.

Newdaynewname1 · 09/07/2020 15:06

@TheFlis12345 and if you have the muscle levels of a bodybuilder, size 8 is unlikely to fit. muscles take space as well

Fressia123 · 09/07/2020 15:09

Please ignore my poor boobs... This photo is from a couple of weeks ago. I'll post one clothed too

With clothes (the other ones are carrying the baby).

Get new scales. unless you are a spectacular pear shape (or sucking your tummy in a lot), there is no way you are 67 kg

SharonasCorona · 09/07/2020 15:12

You don’t look like 67.5 kilos at all. (I still can’t see your weight mentioned in your first post, I must be goi nag blind!)

I don’t think you have anything to worry about OP.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 09/07/2020 15:17

You're very toned. I have a friend who is about the same size as you and would probably weigh less but she has zero muscle tone. You have defined biceps. Stop weighing yourself, you're fine.

Redyellowpink · 09/07/2020 15:22

OP, do you have a v long body and short legs? That pushes up your BMI as obviously trunk weighs more than legs, but in the same height, if that makes sense

Fressia123 · 09/07/2020 15:23

Yes Red my trunk is "longer" than my legs so to speak.

@monkeyonthetable

The BMI assumes people's weight is excess fat. If you train hard then you will have a lot of solid muscle which is much denser ('heavier') per cubic cm than fat. So you can be tiny and quite heavy but perfectly fit, which sounds like it describes you. Lots of professional sports people fall into NHS 'obese' category due to muscle density. It's not a perfect measuring system. Be proud of how strong you are and how slim you look.
This isn't really true, especially for women. Most women cannot gain that amount of lean muscle without serious body building and diet control (and possible 'supplements'). Bodybuilders don't generally use a BMI chart, they measure bodyfat % instead.
Redyellowpink · 09/07/2020 15:31

YesRedmy trunk is "longer" than my legs so to speak.

That's it then, I have the same thing. My bmi is around 21, so healthy weight, but I look quite skinny as my trunk is very long compared to my legs. I am 5'10' though so you cant really notice. I know this because I used to be anorexic and my doctor told me that, with patients with v long trunks, upper arm circumference is a better measure of being underweight than bmi

ShowOfHands · 09/07/2020 15:37

I'm roughly the same height as you op. This was before lockdown when I was running 50km a week. I've been lifting VERY heavy weights since then and have bigger shoulders and arms but still only weigh 53kg. I can't get in a Gap size 8. I'm an 8 in some places, 10 in others.

I can't work this out at all!

Fressia123 · 09/07/2020 15:51

Show when I was that weight I was a UK size 4. I had to wear kids clothes. I was also running around 100km a week as I was marathon training. I think I've always been heavier than I look, which would make sense with what Red is saying.

OP posts:
zingally · 09/07/2020 15:53

Honey, unless you're 2ft tall... Which I doubt... If you're size 8, and have a 27 inch waist, you're not over-weight.

Use your eyes and a bit of common sense.

ShowOfHands · 09/07/2020 16:08

I have a short abdomen and short thighs but long calves. I'm really out of proportion.

I reckon next to each other, we would look rather similar size wise yet you weigh 14 kilos more than me and fit into smaller clothes. Confused

rosiejaune · 09/07/2020 16:39

@merryhouse

Ok, this "waist half your height thing" is bollocks.

I mean, if it's more than that then obviously that's too much. But saying "it's fine, it's less than half" is ridiculous.

Most adult women are above 5ft, ie above 60 inches. A 30-inch waist is not small.

The ratio is about health risks. So if your waist is more than half your height, you are at significantly increased risk for health issues. But still below half can be increased risk.

A 30" waist is small for me though (5'11'').

Fressia123 · 09/07/2020 19:41

There's another thread with a similar vein.. "what's your weight given you're 5ft3" of what I've seen I'm definitely the heaviest for my size

OP posts:
Oddgirlout · 09/07/2020 19:49

I'm a bit surprised by the poster who thinks a 30 inch waist isn't small!

OP it must be muscle. I've lost about 4 inches off my hips over lockdown and barely moved on the scales. I am working out about five days a week though
