To think racism is everywhere?

I just watched this mini film thing and it's really gotten me quite upset.

I'm black and no one has ever been really openly racist to me but I've had loads of times where stuff has happened and I know it's because I'm black. No one ever talks about the little things and how much anxiety it causes!

These guys did nothing to anyone but have been treated unfairly anyway. One guy was even told he wasn't a human being.

Am I unreasonable for feeling I'm not welcome in the western world even though I was born here and so was my mum. Sad

Ah ok. I see what you mean now. Apologies for my assumption.

Pinkyyy · 09/07/2020 22:01

@srownbkingirl no problem at all

Komacho · 09/07/2020 22:02
**@Crispsnatcher* it truly is. What's worse is that the same people who are fighting for their own equality, have no interest in that of others. After all, there is no freedom until we are all* equal.
You mean people who claim to be against racism and yet still support racists like Donald Trump...

Pinkyyy · 09/07/2020 22:05

@Komacho Excuse me?

user1471565182 · 09/07/2020 22:05

Havnt you been racist af on other threads Pinky?

Pinkyyy · 09/07/2020 22:07

@user1471565182

Havnt you been racist af on other threads Pinky?
Please show me an example to support your allegation.
Livelovebehappy · 09/07/2020 22:14

pinkyyy your point is entirely valid. You experience racism, and have every right to mention it. Don’t allow yourself to be bullied off a thread.

Pinkyyy · 09/07/2020 22:40

@Livelovebehappy thank you, I really appreciate that. I'm not sure why I've upset people just for talking about my experience.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/07/2020 23:06

I wish I didn’t agree with you op but sadly I do

I also can understand the frustration felt for not allowing this thread just to be about a black womans experience because we have to be honest here or ask ourselves why we do not want to hear this we all know the worse day to day racism is towards black people we can’t deny it we shouldn’t deny it. Look at history look at what happened in America look at America now in 2020 look at South Africa look in our prisons look in our mental health units look to our governing boards look to our senior police/nhs directors/judicial seniors positions and it is right there in front of us

We all know other ethnicities have suffered and still do no one is claiming they don’t

Pinkyyy · 09/07/2020 23:16

we all know the worse day to day racism is towards black people

I'm sorry but I don't agree whatsoever. I also don't agree with people trying to one up each other with regards to who experiences the worst racism.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/07/2020 23:20

You don’t fair enough

roxfox · 09/07/2020 23:34

Things have derailed a bit but thanks to everyone who has understood.

Anyway I just want to say that originally when I posted I had just watched the film so I did have black people in mind when I made my comment about racism being everywhere.

I said "You mean people who claim to be against racism and yet still support racists like Donald Trump..."

Lifeisabeach09 · 09/07/2020 23:46

Yes I worry for the next generation.

Don't. As bad as racism still is, it is better than it used to be. Look around, you see more mixed-ethnicity couples and children than ever! Now go back 20 years...far less so. Fifty years ago, almost non-existent.
Diversity and awareness is growing but racism is still ever present. Times are changing but move slow.

Lifeisabeach09 · 09/07/2020 23:47

*then

Foxinsocks1 · 09/07/2020 23:50

For years I thought it was rare as it’s not evident in my circle. Then I mixed my circle up and recently I’m seeing it more sadly. BAME definitely seem to be victim most as is evident from social mobility and prospects however it’s across all of society.
My job as I see it is to challenge it when I see it, raise my children right and with an awareness of it and to continue my work to give all of society the best chance and ensure equality in that.

Pinkyyy · 10/07/2020 07:22

@Komacho Haha you're so funny and witty for repeating yourself.

JRUIN · 10/07/2020 07:40

You're right to say that racism still exists OP, and from all races towards all races. Unfortunately some people will use any excuse to hate and bully, you only have to glance over posts on mumsnet to see that.

PablosHoney · 10/07/2020 07:55

@JRUIN you’ve seen racist posts??

Whatafustercluck · 10/07/2020 07:57

I'm the epitome of white privilege - would have said a few years ago that racism is dying out, not seen it happening with my own eyes since school days etc. Then was horrified to hear the stories my mixed race friend shared with me. Simple fact is we all live in our own bubbles. I surround myself with people who hold similar values to me and was lulled into a false sense of security that just because I never personally saw it happening because I have a lovely family and friends who are not racist, that meant it isn't happening. Speak to any non-white person and they will have a similar story to tell.

BerriesAndLeaves · 10/07/2020 09:00

Yanbu op. The only people I'd be interested in hearing about how prevalent racism is, is the victims of racism themselves. People who aren't from the minority group themselves are in no position to decide how prevalent it is against that minority group.

Nefelibata86 · 10/07/2020 09:28

I think it's unfortunate that the thread has derailed into whataboutery. Clearly racism and discrimination exist towards various groups. A skin colour or name immediately denotes someone as a potential target though, in a way that (admittedly I imagine) the travelling community are not so demarcated, perhaps their difference being more subtle? It just so happens the spotlight is on blm at the moment. In spaces where discrimination against other groups is being discussed I wouldn't dream of detracting from that by bringing in my own different experiences personally as as evidenced here the discussion gets wayfair, loses traction and opportunity is lost

Nefelibata86 · 10/07/2020 09:29

Waylaid! Blush

Cadent · 10/07/2020 09:30

we all know the worse day to day racism is towards black people

I'm sorry but I don't agree whatsoever. I also don't agree with people trying to one up each other with regards to who experiences the worst racism.

Are you having a laugh? What a ridiculous comment. Black people are dying due to racism.

Pinkyyy · 10/07/2020 09:47

@Nefelibata86 do you have any idea what you're actually talking about? Nobody is detracting form anything. The OP asked a question and I answered it. Why shouldn't I talk about the racism I face?

@Cadent no, what's ridiculous is your comment.

I'll be leaving now. Quite clearly people only care about racism from white to black people.
