To ask what movie I'm remembering?

The bits I remember:

A man and woman (i think) are killed, leaving their baby son alive.

An ape- or maybe a chimp?- loses HER baby.

The chimp/ape takes the surviving human baby.

I remember some later bits, but not much:

The human grows up and finds his relatives.

One of them- an elderly gentleman- slides down the stairs on a tray, falls, and dies.

Can anyone help? Did I dream this?

Tarzan?

paddingtonbearsmarmalade · 08/07/2020 18:37

Sounds like Tarzan? Maybe a live action version rather than the Disney one?

CoffeeBeansGalore · 08/07/2020 18:37

Sounds like Tarzan. Greystoke?

TheShining · 08/07/2020 18:38

I thought that- but I can't remember Jane!

I believe it was in the 80's. I would have only been about 9, so 1990 latest?

Does Tarzan's dad die on a tray?

I've never seen it.

Pelleas · 08/07/2020 18:39

I think this is Greystoke - The Legend of Tarzan. Although based on the Tarzan stories, the name Tarzan doesn't feature in the film. Christophe Lambert plays the adult Greystoke, with a French accent.

Skinnydecafflatte · 08/07/2020 18:39

I’m not sure but it did remind me about the BBC tv series First Born with Charles Dance. That was really good (or seemed so back then!) Wondering it’s on somewhere? Am intrigued to find out the answer to this though.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 08/07/2020 18:40

Greystoke was 1984 & starred Christopher Lambert.

CastleCrasher · 08/07/2020 18:40

Lucan? He was raised by wolves but then goes off and find his family.
Or a version of mowgli/ jungle book, there are lots of versions out there

TheShining · 08/07/2020 18:42

It's Greystroke- thank you SO much! I thought it was "Gorillas in the Mist" and just traumatised myself by watching about 3/4 of it 😂

The original Planet of the Apes?

EasyAndy101 · 08/07/2020 18:42

It's 100% greystoke

Pelleas · 08/07/2020 18:42

Greystoke is definitely the only Tarzan film in which an old man (Tarzan's grandfather) dies by sliding downstairs on a tray.

Jane never appears in the jungle scenes - she's the ward (I think) of the grandfather and they meet for the first time at the grandfather's mansion.

x-posted!

Ooh First Born @Skinnydecafflatte thank for reminding me of that! It was really good.

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/07/2020 18:45

Sounds like Tarzan or Greystone.

LovingLen · 08/07/2020 18:48

It’s Greystoke,

TheWernethWife · 08/07/2020 18:49

Greystoke, with the gorgeous Christopher Lambert. Ralph Richardson played his grandfather.

There is a bit of a sex scene where he "makes love" to the Andie MacDowell character only he does it from behind - obviously he's only seen animals doing it!!!

Pelleas · 08/07/2020 18:52

He reverts to chimp-like behaviour at any point of high emotion, including the lurve scene. It's a great film, one of my favourites.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 08/07/2020 18:52

That was Ralph Richardson, that was such a sad bit! Love that film. Andie McDowell’s first film part and they dubbed over her Southern accent with Glenn Close!

TheShining · 08/07/2020 19:13

I've just rented it from Prime...thanks guys!
