to think that cheese on toast is not a snack?!

To me snacks are crisps, biscuits, nuts, that kind of thing.

Cheese on toast is a light meal like lunch or tea if you had a big lunch.

Just watching the Ranganathon, which I think is improved by being online weirdly, and they mention that CoT is the nations favourite lockdown snack!

Forgot to add that a bacon sandwich is about #3, and for me thats also a lunch/tea/supper meal rather than a snack!

I think cheese in toast is a fairly substantial snack. Cheese in crackers-definitely snack. Bacon sandwich definitely in lunch category for me. IMO it’s about preparation ease!

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/07/2020 00:44

@Haggisfish

For me crackers and cheese can be either. A couple of crackers and cheese, snack. More than that, lunch.

I’m with you OP. It’s more than just a snack. A snack is a piece of fruit or a bag of popcorn or something.

It’s not something you’d eat between meals. Unless your meals are taken nine hours apart ...

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 08/07/2020 00:46

Packet of frazzles = snack

Cheese on toast = preparation = not snack

Boom45 · 08/07/2020 00:54

Depend on your lifestyle/appetite. When I worked in a warehouse, lugging boxes about and stacking pallets then if I had a snack it was something substantial like cheese on toast. Something proper between meals because I was always hungry.
Now I work in an office (or a desk in my bedroom at the moment) a snack is an apple or a chocolate bar or something.
Lifestyles make a huge difference to your snack perspective....

BerriesAndLeaves · 08/07/2020 00:55

I'd have it as lunch but they might mean something people would have if they were hungry when they got back from clubbing etc. I remember having kebab, pizza, chips etc in the evening after going out when i'd already had dinner earlier when i was young (and skinny) I'd never do it now.

Tiggytigert · 08/07/2020 00:56

No definitely too much prep for me! Snack is something quick and handy!

Itisbetter · 08/07/2020 00:57

It’s a snack if you just make it for yourself and a meal if everyone gets some

Rumbletumbleinmytummy · 08/07/2020 00:57

It's a meal to me atleast!

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/07/2020 01:01

Fair point @Boom45

But I work a very physical job, and I still cant quite get the idea that its a snack! But I am wondering now if its how I was brought up.

My mother would say she was frugal, because we didnt have much money. I say that she was tight as she valued savings above any sort of luxury (and sometimes even what I would consider to be basics neccessities) We werent allowed snacks at all, only three meals a day. She went mad once that we had embarrassed her by going a bit mad with crisps when we had people round for tea as we were never normally allowed them and it showed her up!

I do still feel guilty if I eat anything outside of a proper meal time.

And there was plenty of money I now know, apparently it caused huge rows between her and my dad that she wouldnt spend the money he was earning on decent food and few treats and squirrel it all away for "one day...."

Days not come yet....

I know what you mean, I used to have a toasted sandwich as a snack after clubbing, A friend of mind considered a bowl of cornflakes a snack too..which I did find odd. She would have it at bedtime as a school girl, I stayed over at her house and her mum got out the corn flakes for us to have before bed...in my house it was a cup of bornvita or horlicks at bedtime!

FlamedToACrisp · 08/07/2020 01:18

Greedy pig here - and even I agree it's a meal. I would have it in the evening if I stayed up many hours after my evening meal, but then I'd consider it to be 'supper' - a fourth meal because my day was longer.

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/07/2020 01:19

I find the concept of supper weird too!

I know someone who's kids have had supper before bed every night since they could hold a spoon. Usually a bowl of cereal. THey dont seem to be hungry for it, its just habit, but surely if they have eaten a good dinner (and they do, they are not grazers) its just food for the sake of eating?! They dont seem to enjoy, they sit and eat it in the same way that they sit and read a school book (say). Just doing it and getting it done like another job.

Dullardmullard · 08/07/2020 01:20

They’d be bloody war in mine if I told them it was their dinner, lunch maybe but they’d want something else too go with.

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/07/2020 01:20

@FlamedToACrisp

Not your supper, I get that if your day is 6 hours longer than normal, you would need more fuel. I mean the snacky type supper.

Grilled cheese... Oh. I am hungry now.

Anordinarymum · 08/07/2020 01:21

Depends on your version of cheese on toast. Now if you are talking Welsh rarebit, now that is a meal : yumm :)

Bettercallgall · 08/07/2020 01:21

It's on my dds list of snack ideas for her anorexia recovery.

tabulahrasa · 08/07/2020 01:23

It’s dual purpose? Surely?

Could be either a light meal or a large snack... any sort of toast thing or sandwich works as both do they not?

Ploughingthrough · 08/07/2020 01:26

I would definitely consider this a small meal - probably lunch.

It's on my dds list of snack ideas for her anorexia recovery I think in this case what is considered a snack is probably different, as she will need denser, higher calorie food at smaller intervals. I hope DD is doing well.

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/07/2020 01:28

ANorexia recovery is a different kettle of fish though, I hope she recovers and is doing well. Flowers

MiddlesexGirl · 08/07/2020 01:28

Cheese on toast is no more prep than a cup of tea so could be a snack. Or bulk it out with some salad etc and it's lunch.
One sandwich, no fruit or sides can also be a snack.
Like pp have said, it depends on your activity levels and metabolism.

Heyhih3 · 08/07/2020 01:29

I suppose it’s in between I wouldn’t be full if I had cheese on toast alone for my lunch. It’s not filling enough. But I wouldn’t have it just before I made dinner either.
