to think that cheese on toast is not a snack?!

To me snacks are crisps, biscuits, nuts, that kind of thing.

Cheese on toast is a light meal like lunch or tea if you had a big lunch.

Just watching the Ranganathon, which I think is improved by being online weirdly, and they mention that CoT is the nations favourite lockdown snack!

Irish answer... toasted special with chips in the pub is lunch. Toasted sandwich at home is after school/before practice snack. Ritz crackers with cheese and grapes is elevenses.

GrumpyHoonMain · 08/07/2020 12:15

I also had a boyfriend at uni who could spend all day scoffing sandwiches, crisps, toast, cereal, chocolate, biscuits and pasties but if he hadn't had a meat and two veg hot dinner would insist "I haven't eaten today".

Lol my husband is the same.

NothingIsWrong · 08/07/2020 12:21

I've just had cheese on toast and a yogurt for lunch. Was properly yummy.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 08/07/2020 12:28

When you all say cheese on toast toast do you mean
No 1
Or
No 2
?

@SchrodingersImmigrant

When you all say cheese on toast toast do you mean No 1 Or No 2 ?
I mean no 1 but with 1 slice. But fuck me no 2 looks good.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 08/07/2020 12:32

@GrumpyHoonMain same, but I forgot to crop the second slice off😁
And yesssssss

Iloveyoutothefridgeandback · 08/07/2020 12:49

No 2 is a cheese toastie if you are in the UK, or a cheese jaffle if in Australia

cologne4711 · 08/07/2020 12:57

I would call no 2 a toasted sandwich.

Anyway cheese on toast is a light meal for me, not a snack.

midnightstar66 · 08/07/2020 13:39

Imagine my absolute horror when my laziness that has evolved over lockdown has led me to buy sliced cheese instead of our usual blocks of various cheddars and the only type available in my fridge is EDAM!!! One cannot make cheese on toast with Edam and I'm now left with a craving thanks to this thread. Had it on chilli oatcakes instead which was most definitely a snack but a disappointing one in the circumstances!

Goatinthegarden · 08/07/2020 13:57

@AnnaBanana333

Why are people so horrified at a 200-250 calorie snack?

There are a lot of women on here with disordered eating. MN food threads are quite sad.

I def don’t under-eat, but I think it’s too much for a snack because I like to eat 300ish calorie breakfasts and lunches and then a bigger evening meal of about 6-800calories. A few nights a week I’ll have a wee dessert too. Maybe a latte if I’m out and about.

I might have a bit of fruit or something between meals, but I wouldn’t have a sit down snack like cheese on toast.

Rumbletumbleinmytummy · 08/07/2020 14:12

I wanna bloody know how people are making cheese on toast for 200-250 calories?
Or are we talking that for each slice? I'm on a diet and so hungry. Trying to figure out how I can "afford" a cheese on toast!

midnightstar66 · 08/07/2020 14:17

@Rumbletumbleinmytummy yes, even the rather exaggerated over 300 calorie version was based on one slice im afraid

SchrodingersImmigrant · 08/07/2020 14:17

@Rumbletumbleinmytummy ryvita rye and pilgrims lower fat cheddar. It's REALLY good.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 08/07/2020 14:19

Or normal slice (approx 100g) and serving of Cathedral cheddar (approx 100cal).

But yeah. It's a 1 slice.

Maybe they don't have large breakfasts and lunches. Or lattes or deserts. Personally though I have all of those things and honestly don't have the first clue how many calories are in any of my meals. I'd goes more than you have listed but I might fancy a larger snack if I've been active or the time between meals is long.

LovingLen · 08/07/2020 14:23

It’s not only 250 calories is it, surely that is just the cheese.

amusedbush · 08/07/2020 14:23

1 is cheese on toast/toasted cheese, 2 is a grilled cheese. A cheese toastie has lines on it from the toastie machine but a grilled cheese is fried in a pan.

Nonononon · 08/07/2020 14:30

loving well it depends on how much cheese you use but.. a portion of cheese is 30g so that comes in at around 120cals (assuming you use cheddar, not sure if calorie content of others) and bread is around 100cals.
Obviously you can add various toppings like tomatoes, onions, ham...

tiutinkerbell · 08/07/2020 14:40

I'd deffo class it as a snack... I had a chicken pitta yesterday as a snack between lunch and dinner Grin... (and about 4 other snacks in between)!

There was a time in my life when I didn’t have a clue how many calories were in my food either, but since I hit my thirties, I have to be a bit more aware of what I eat and know when to stop or I put weight on.

When I was in my twenties, I probably would have snacked on cheese on toast at 4am after getting a kebab on the way home.

lillylemons · 08/07/2020 14:53

dd 12 would disagree she see cheese on toast has a snack she would laugh at me if I give it to her for a meal.

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/07/2020 17:10

Almost 50/50 split then!

I have to admit to being a bit shocked that anyone could manage 4 slices of it for lunch, I am annoyingly not quite able to manage 2 so I cant have it unless DD is around to hoover up the left over half slice. I just find it really stodgy.

  1. Cheese on toast
  2. Toasted cheese sandwich

To me a snack is something you eat between meals if you're a bit peckish. Cheese on toast is a light meal [lunch] or breakfast .

my2bundles · 08/07/2020 17:47

I would call it lunch my teenager would call it a snack 😂

TheFluffiestCat · 08/07/2020 17:51

I'd say lunch. Seeded bread @262 calories for 2 slices, mature cheddar about 40g @166 calories = 428 calories. One slice of cheese on toast isn't worth the gas to cook it.
