to think that cheese on toast is not a snack?!

To me snacks are crisps, biscuits, nuts, that kind of thing.

Cheese on toast is a light meal like lunch or tea if you had a big lunch.

Just watching the Ranganathon, which I think is improved by being online weirdly, and they mention that CoT is the nations favourite lockdown snack!

1 slice = snack

I'd give it to toddler DS for snack sometimes. I got the idea from the toddler groups we used to go to ore lock down. They'd also so crumpets and scotch pancakes as a snack.

2 slices would be a lunch

Bacon sandwiches are a breakfast.

Durgasarrow · 08/07/2020 02:01

If it's open faced, I'd consider it a snack. If it's a sandwich, a meal, especially with sides. It isn't really any more calories than a handful of crackers and cheese or a handful of nuts or a chocolate bar, depending on how it's prepared.

Mothership4two · 08/07/2020 02:03

Definitely would be counted as a snack in my house with 3 men who (to me) eat enormous amounts and not lunch/dinner/supper. I would happily have it for lunch. To me a snack is a piece of fruit or a cracker.

Ginkypig · 08/07/2020 02:06

Hmm see I think it could be either.

I almost certainly could have it at say 3 or 4pm and still eat a meal later in the evening but equally I could have it for my lunch or tea In Place of a meal and not feel like Iv Skipped a meal.

That being said, if I'm honest I could very rarely be arsed to put that much effort in for a snack so I tend to not eat food like that as a snack.
My snacks would be something easily grabbed without much effort. Crisps etc.

Iloveyoutothefridgeandback · 08/07/2020 02:11

People are over complicating it. Surely it just depends how hungry someone is?

ARoseInHarlem · 08/07/2020 02:16

It’s cooked, therefore not a snack.

A single slice of bread wrapped around a slice of cheddar cut off the block, eaten standing up with one hand while doing something else = snack

Toast, buttered, cheese grated on top, Worcestershire sauce, popped under the grill, eaten on a plate with mustard = fairly decent lunch

BigChocFrenzy · 08/07/2020 02:22

Cheese on toast is a meal:
protein, fat & carbs with plenty of calories to fuel me up

I never snack between meals

Yeahnahmum · 08/07/2020 04:58

It's a snack for sure.

Pitterpatterpotter · 08/07/2020 06:26

My teenager would disagree with you! Apparently 3 pieces of cheese on toast is a reasonable snack followed by a bowl of cereal!

ChasingRainbows19 · 08/07/2020 08:00

I’d class a sandwich or cheese on toast as part of a meal ( lunch mostly) but my meals are small portions anyway.Snacks to me are more pickybits: crisps, biscuits, veg sticks/dip.

RedElephants · 08/07/2020 08:15

I love cheese on toast..
Doorstep white bread toasted, a very thin spread of Marmite with a layer of cheese, right to the edges and grilled till bubbling. Yum Grin

Blimey, it makes you realise why we have an obesity crisis if people seem that a snack Shock

Ifailed · 08/07/2020 08:28

A snack is food you don't need to eat.

doodleygirl · 08/07/2020 08:36

I think it could be both. If I had it as a snack it would be one piece. Lunch or dinner would be 2 pieces, plus some salad.

ShaunaTheSheep · 08/07/2020 08:37

Favourite lockdown breakfast/brunch/lunch/afternoon tea/whatever for the teens is a bagel topped with toasted cheese and salami, or a piece of cheese on toast. It’s quick easy and hot. Not sure why a PP said snacks had to be cold?

Surely the rule of snack is it can be eaten without spoiling your appetite for a main meal?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 08/07/2020 08:41

Depends, doesn't it. I eat light lunch at 12 and dinner is between 7 - 7:30. So at 3:30 I get "snack" and that can easily be something like cheese on toast.

Sorry, bit a single cheese on toast as in 1 slice of bread seriously isn't lunch or a dinner...

SchrodingersImmigrant · 08/07/2020 08:44

I think the problem is that no one actually knows what snack is😂
Is it a mini meal at regular time between lunch and dinner (or even breakfast and lunch) like some countries have?
Is it a random something at random times?
Is it constant munching?

Everyone imagines something else under the word snack.

Oh bore off. 🙄🙄
CherryPavlova · 08/07/2020 08:53

The trouble is snacks are dismissed as small items you can just pop into your belly without thinking. They are nothingness, so ‘don’t count’. Cheese on toast actually has some reasonable nutritional benefit and is more filling. You notice you’ve eaten it.

You shouldn’t be snacking unless you are actually hungry. If you are hungry a biscuit or packet of pickled onion monster munch aren’t the answer. Cheese on toast would be better.

Whether it constitutes a meal would surely depend on how much you have and whether you have anything with it?

Lucked · 08/07/2020 08:56

I had it for lunch on Saturday so meal for me.

However if someone else is making it for themselves and offer to make you some and it is outwith a meal time then I would consider it a snack.

Howmanysleepsnow · 08/07/2020 08:57

I just googled and 1 slice is 313 calories... that’s more than the salmon, new potatoes and veg I had for dinner last night. Anything with more calories than an evening meal (my biggest meal of the day)surely can’t count as a snack.

Beebeet · 08/07/2020 09:00

If I was really hungry between meals I would maybe have one slice as a snack, with tomatoes, red onion and peppers on top so less cheese, rather than reach for chocolate and crisps, but 2 slices is a meal!

Housewoes23 · 08/07/2020 09:00

A snack to me is something to be eaten on the go if you're really hungry but meal isn't an option, because of no cooking facilities or another feasible reason. So desk at work if not had time to take lunch yet.. Fuel in middle of a long walk or similar. However I guess a small portion could tide someone over if they weren't having a main meal until later. I think it is filling though, and I'm rather gluttonous.

TheSoapyFrog · 08/07/2020 09:00

It's like a raw cheese sandwich which I wouldn't have said was a snack. I would consider it as part of lunch or supper.
