Hi

I love the Georgian period interiors but I don’t have a Georgian house...would it be distasteful to decorate my non Georgian house in Georgian style?

Yes I am being distasteful?
No it’s fine and not poor taste

Thanks

I guess the real problem is you could do it and then be really dissatisfied if it looks wrong.

It would depend on the house, but 60s doesn't seem like a great match to me. But I's start thinking about what it is you like about that period, and look at lots of pictures of houses similar to yours. I bet you'll find something that has the elements you like.

Some mid-century stuff can be very symmetrical and elegant, that might be a direction to go in.

@merryhouse nasty subsidence you’ve got there. Imagine watching your supper slide down hill!

Looks lovely

It's historical appropriation!

Not really. Go for it.

AdoptedBumpkin · 07/07/2020 20:44

I don't think it matters.

I don’t think the age of the house really matters but IME Georgian doesn’t really work unless you have properly high ceilings.

Think about what you like about the Georgian period as use it as inspiration rather than trying to overlay Georgian style onto a 60’s build - or you could look at features they may have in common - colour schemes, lighting, lines and design something that marries both eras. That would be a challenge! But an interesting one, and not undoable.

Sorry but Georgian in a 1960s house will be all wrong. Proportions of your rooms and styles of your windows will not suite the Georgian interior and furniture style.
