Kasabian singer gets community order for beating up his partner

She was left bruised and battered and it sounds like he tried to strangle her. It was witnessed and reported to 999 by a child.

He will do 200 hours community service.

His actions are so shameful he has left the band but not shameful enough for him to do more than this as a punishment.

It sends out the wrong message completely to me.

Sounds like his partner didn’t want charges pressed but the police went ahead and that there was a history of domestic abuse.

I imagine a year in rehab and then the band reforming with interviews about his redemption and rehab saving his life.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/07/2020 09:04

Weird, but sadly predictable, that the first apologist on that tweet is a young woman suggesting that there may have been provocation...

Link to sentencing remarks

@Worstemailever

Well, apparently, he received a lenient sentence because his ex girlfriend said that she wanted to get back together with him (according to some media reports of the court case). In which case, I have less sympathy for the victim than I do for her poor poor child who witnessed domestic abuse and intoxication and then could be subjected to yet more!
DV is such a complex thing. Victims often want the perpetrator to ‘be forgiven’ because that’s the dynamic that is in the relationship, one of power and control. Victims need support to break away from the abuse, it’s all too easy to say we’d do something different in her situation.
CockCarousel · 08/07/2020 09:28

I imagine a year in rehab - According to the BBC article the courts have ordered he does a 5 day rehabilitation course. 5 fucking days!

UgaBaluga82 · 08/07/2020 09:29

CCTV of a violent beating and strangulation and he gets community service?
WTF?!?

Do women really matter so little?

Poor child that had to witness that ☹

mrs2468 · 08/07/2020 09:43

Yet Caroline flack with suspected DV was dragged through the press.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/07/2020 09:53

@UgaBaluga82, the reasoning is explained in the sentencing note posted up thread.

I don't agree with the level of sentencing, but it is limited by the sentencing guidelines available for the offence he was charged with. The sentencing guidelines are generally woeful for such crimes, sadly.

I stand corrected re who heard the case though: it was a DJ sitting in the Mags.

The sentencing note is horrifying re the assault. But does explain the reasoning.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/07/2020 11:51

The sentencing note is horrifying re the assault. But does explain the reasoning. I quite liked the rather extreme clarity of that. It gives people somethong to pick up and use to get the sentencing changed. We don't need a law degree to understand the issues. The more judges, of all types, who do that the better.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/07/2020 12:04

It's really clear, isn't it?

Sentencing guidelines have needed a shake up for a long time (look at the shitty sentences for causing death behind the wheel of a car for another example alongside DV where they're woeful in the extreme).

@MinnieMD

The band have released a new statement saying he misled a lot of fans.

twitter.com/kasabianhq/status/1280581544705495041?s=21

I don’t know much about them, will they be able to continue without him?

I don't see why not. Serge can sing (has a better voice I always thought) and writes a lot/most of the songs (or he used to when I knew them),
dannydyerismydad · 08/07/2020 13:27

Really disappointed with the fans today.

Cries of Tom being kicked while he's down. Err. I think you'll find that's what he was doing to his partner.

Apparently he was a lovely bloke when fans met him in the pub. Yep. Drunks usually are lovely in the pub, it all goes to shit when they get home.

It sounds like he has massive issues with substance abuse and he absolutely needs help and support to overcome these issues. But let's reserve our sympathies to the real victim here.

Intruiged · 08/07/2020 14:34

I think the band had their hands tied with the first statement they made, and in the second they made clear they had thought Tom's own statement would be an admission and apology. The band did nothing wrong, this was probably their last straw. Serge is the creative power in the band, I hope they can salvage it.

slipperywhensparticus · 08/07/2020 14:44

Happened to my friend recently he smashed up her home put his hands around her neck the police NFA it within 12 hours due to lack of evidence her kid witnessed the whole lot he bragged on social media he gave her a slapping but there is "not enough evidence" and he might be able to get a harassment warning against her because she put a picture up warning people what he was capable of

HepzibahGreen · 08/07/2020 20:06

I think I'd rather do a couple of months in nick than 200 hours' community service.
You've never been in a prison, have you? If you had you wouldn't say that.

jobhunter7 · 10/07/2020 14:57

@RainRainGoAway2020

Not a fan. But I guess they could carry on without him in this instance. In most bands, trying to carry on without your front man would be difficult.

Not advocating or condoning domestic abuse in any way... but bands don't tend to kick out members for this sort of thing.

savemejebus · 10/07/2020 15:07

I don't know if anyone has read the comments under his most recent statement on Twitter but my god they are abhorrent.
"I for one forgive you" says one fan. Didn't beat the shit out of you love, did he?!
"If your missus forgives you, so should we" 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

DopamineHits · 10/07/2020 16:02

I've only just read up on this. I love Kasabian's music, but Tom always came across as full of himself and in love with all the "rock god" stereotypes.

His statement shocked me. Who cares that he's fine, doesn't he understand that he's not the victim? What about the fiancee he's been attacking? What about the fact that his little girl witnessed his violence and had to call the police for help? Honestly it doesn't sound like he has any self awareness, and that makes me very concerned for his partner, and for his child.

DopamineHits · 10/07/2020 16:04

Kasabian have done the right thing. It would have been easy for them to play off the "she forgave him, so..." bollocks, or go on hiatus until people started to forget. I always preferred Serge's voice anyway, I don't think Tom's David Essex sounding self will be any great loss.
