Kasabian singer gets community order for beating up his partner

She was left bruised and battered and it sounds like he tried to strangle her. It was witnessed and reported to 999 by a child.

He will do 200 hours community service.

His actions are so shameful he has left the band but not shameful enough for him to do more than this as a punishment.

It sends out the wrong message completely to me.

I can understand they had to be careful not to reveal any details regarding the case but they could have said that aspects of his behaviour didn't align with the values of the band rather than pretending he just had mental health or drug/alcohol problems.

How weird I didn't pick up on this when I read that he left the band, after I fell down a massive rabbit hole after reading about singer Ryan Adams issuing an apology for arsehole behaviour towards women and ex wife Mandy Moore.

RainRainGoAway2020 · 07/07/2020 16:02

I used to know him and he always seemed like a lovely guy - just goes to show.
I don’t believe he has a child with the woman he attacked so it’s not a custody issue if she wants him back.

notacooldad · 07/07/2020 16:13

Oh I didn't know about Josh Homme kicking the photographer. That’s shitty
Battery charges ( on both sides) were also reasons for his divorce.

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 07/07/2020 16:15

The law is woefully, woefully inadequate in dealing with DV cases.

Yes. It absolutely is @Backbackandforth.

Nyclair · 07/07/2020 17:06

He received a lenient sentence because his fiancée didn't support the prosecution, they are still together.

Chewy85 · 07/07/2020 17:55

I feel so bad for the victim and hope she finds the strength to do what’s right for her and her child soon. No child should have to ring 999 or witness abuse, physical or verbal. The article says it isn’t the first time so I doubt it’ll be the last

Doyoumind · 07/07/2020 18:00

Reading between the lines, I wonder if there could have been issues in his previous relationship based on some thing he has said in the past.

At least there has been a lot of condemnation of him now the truth is out.

There was an announcement a couple of days ago from kasabian saying he was leaving. Now we know why! Shock

Wishforsnow · 07/07/2020 18:15

What a pathetic excuse for a man. He sentence is so lenient and he still thinks he is the victim. Sounds like your garden narcissist. Hope the child is OK.

YerAWizardHarry · 07/07/2020 18:16

@Worstemailever I don't think it's his child that saw but rather the ex girlfriends child.

He has a child to someone else though Angry

Fatted · 07/07/2020 18:19

To be fair to the rest of the band, they probably legally could not say much until he had been in court. I think they have done what they can and it's good they came out and said it before.

Community orders are very common for this type of offence. If anything he has been given a harsher one.

Fatted · 07/07/2020 18:20

The system is flawed. I'm not condoning it by any stretch of the imagination.

Hingeandbracket · 07/07/2020 18:25

In any thread about a controversial issue there always seems to a be "move along, nothing to see" post like this.

I am astounded by the (lenient) penalty given (makes no difference if it's the same as commonly given - it's a fucking scandal) and the reaction of (some) fans.

SimonJT · 07/07/2020 18:27

While we ideally should be equals, if anything people in the public eye should be treated more harshly as an example to others.

I hope she gets rid soon, she isn’t just putting herself in danger but a child as well.

MinnieMD · 07/07/2020 20:39

The band have released a new statement saying he misled a lot of fans.

twitter.com/kasabianhq/status/1280581544705495041?s=21

I don’t know much about them, will they be able to continue without him?

MonsteraCheeseplant · 07/07/2020 21:01

Ah I see. Their last message said they weren't going to comment further but I guess they saw how badly they had come across and had to about turn on that.

DubaiDublin73 · 07/07/2020 21:48

Apparently, there had been previous calls to the house. Now fans have gone on suicide watch as the band have 'abandoned' him. No - they gave him a chance to put a statement out saying what had happened and he didn't. That's not showing he's sorry and taking responsibility.

My ex strangled me more than once in front of child. He pled guilty. He got a conditional discharge. Sentences are abysmal.

thedancingbear · 07/07/2020 21:54

He's clearly got good PR people. They've managed to spin this well.

I don't think the sentence is necessarily lenient. I think I'd rather do a couple of months in nick than 200 hours' community service. The former would be no cake walk but the latter would be humiliating. I just hope they have him picking litter and not teaching kids music or some other bullshit.

Kasabian are/were shit btw.

Tavannach · 08/07/2020 00:36

I feel so sorry for the child in this situation. I hope they're getting the support they need.

blubellsarebells · 08/07/2020 00:49

4 or 5 weeks of community service.
Doing what exactly?
Its disgraceful and the way they have treated their fans is disgraceful too.
That poor child.
Ive come across another member of the band in a work capacity and it wasn't a pleasant experience.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/07/2020 08:57

I like Kasabian and don't think I've been treated badly. Reading their updated press statement yesterday it's clear what they did and why, and that Tom let them down, going back on their agreement about who would say what pre-hearing.

Tom is a fucking dickhead. He's always been a dickhead, but now he's a convicted domestic abuser he's clearly just another bloke who hates women. I'm angry at him for hitting his girlfriend. I'm angry he did this in front of a child. I think far less of him (I'm sure he doesn't care!).

I'm not angry at the rest of the band though.

GameChange123 · 08/07/2020 09:00

There was a segment on BBC East Midlands today 2 days ago with a pre-covid video clip of him visiting a (his?) local primary school in Leicester doing the rockstar thing with pupils & teachers. It was very much of the leaving the band due to personal issues, which I thought hinted at MH issues.
