Moving to South Yorkshire...recommendations needed!

Posted on another board but reposting here due to traffic

Due to job circumstances, I will be looking to move to South Yorkshire in the near future but dont know where to start!
I'm from Leicestershire originally which I find not a very friendly place (where I was anyway), and now based near Leeds. I love the North compared to the Midlands but I've lived near very grey cities in build up areas and just want to live somewhere with a more village type lifestyle with little independent shops etc.

My job will be based near Sheffield but I've been looking at Chesterfield, Barnsley, Wakefield and the surrounding areas too. Does anyone have any suggestions from their experience of South Yorkshire of where would be nice?

@WaltzingBetty calm down Braveheart, you don’t need to defend Barnsley and Rotherham at all costs . .

Exactly the sort of thoughtful and intelligent response I'd expect from someone who makes uninformed sweeping statements, cannot follow clear logic, and likens asking objective questions to being 'Braveheart'. I'm going to take a wild guess and assume that your history knowledge is on par with your geography Grin

One more thing to consider @DilemmaADay

Proximity to football stadiums - the Bramall and Hillsborough areas can be a nuisance on match days

brushandmop · 07/07/2020 10:44

no one mentioning Doncaster Grin

Mamamamycorona · 07/07/2020 10:45

We moved to west Yorkshire, from the south east, in January. Despite lockdown it hasn't been as hard as I expected. People are much nicer, the water tastes better and the scenery! I'm confident my children will have better choices here, than in the area we moved from

Prettybluepigeons · 07/07/2020 10:46

Are they shite welcoming in Barnsley!!!
Very very unwelcoming I'd say! Local town for local people !

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 07/07/2020 10:48

By secondary school.

Silverdale or Tapton
High Storrs
Meadow head/King Edwards
Stocksbridge/Penistone/Bradfield
Ecclesfield
Newfield
Handsworth
Birley Spa

This list isn’t all the schools, but the best ones. Also Sir Henry Fanshawe in Dronfield and Eckington/Dinnington are Ok.

Lady Manners/ Hope Valley in the Peak District. Both really good l think.

Whiston in Rotherham.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 07/07/2020 10:49

I mean Wickersley in Rotherham. Got a friend who works there

GinDaddyRedux · 07/07/2020 10:50

Nope.

ConstanceSalinger · 07/07/2020 10:50

@brushandmop

no one mentioning Doncaster Grin
I thought about it but on a budget of £210k it's in the middle area of not enough for somewhere nice and top end of the less desirable areas for Doncaster.

Lots of lovely areas between Barnsley and Sheffield:-

Penistone, Oxspring (where I live), Cawthorne, Wortley, Thurgoland, Silkstone Common.

Only 20 minutes to Meadowhall, 30 minutes to Sheffield, 20 minutes to Barnsley. There's also a great retail park at Stocksbridge called Fox Valley which is close to all the areas I mentioned. All are also near to the motorway.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 07/07/2020 10:54

Oh and we moved here from out of the area and couldn't have been given a warmer welcome to be honest. We have been here 10 years and have lots of friends locally, there's an amazing community spirit.

MrBennsshop · 07/07/2020 10:54

We used to live near Chesterfield. I'd never go back. Its a very deprived area.

@atomicblonde30 no one is looking too deep into anything. It's just being explained that you should not tar two large areas with the same shitty brush. It's neither constructive nor helpful

atomicblonde30 · 07/07/2020 12:26

Don't fall out @Witchofzog and @atomicblonde30, you've both offered me some great insights

Oh really . .

Another vote for Meesbrook for your budget OP, I wouldn't look at places like Stocksbridge, it's too far out. Crookes or Walkley might be a good shout but they're very studenty.

Having said that I've just had a look on Righmove and there seem to be a few around Hunters Bar for your budget. That would be ideal, you'd love it there, loads of little independent shops, cafes etc, good arty vibe and Endcliffe Park on your doorstep.

I think a lot of people may be offloading student HMOs at the moment, could be a good time to snap up a bargain!

Really don't understand the uneducated, horrible remarks about Barnsley. I've lived here a few years now and had no problems at all. Yes there are rough areas but there are much much worse areas in Sheffield. I feel very safe in Barnsley.
You can't judge somewhere you've never lived before, and I imagine most of the posters saying nasty stuff about Barnsley have never stepped foot in the town, never mind lived here!

Crookes and Walkley are not as studenty as they used to be. Lots of families and professionals in these areas now however there are still some students although I think this adds some diversity and vibrancy to areas.
Hunters Bar is also nice but I think that is also a bit studenty not that it would bother me. Close to nice parks, schools and lots of independent shops.
Basically in the areas mentioned above and Meersbrook on that budget you will probably be looking at terraced houses with on road parking and potentially small gardens. None of these things bother me as I am very location/vibe dependent but I know people may choose a bigger property, garden and parking over location. It really depends what lifestyle you want.

Tartan333 · 07/07/2020 12:53

Midsommar, I went to Barnsley city centre a few months ago one Saturday afternoon and will definitely not be returning anytime soon!

Tartan333 · 07/07/2020 12:54

Sorry that should say Barnsley town centre!

SaskiaRembrandt · 07/07/2020 12:57

If you're working in Sheffield and want a nice villagey feel, just live in Sheffield.

atomicblonde30 · 07/07/2020 12:58

Who says everywhere I’ve lived is shitty??

Let’s see now

Barnsley - bleak and depressing
Rotherham - cess pit
Sheffield - quite like it actually, friendly
Hong Kong - lovely bit warm like
London - very nice, bit smoggy though
Salcombe - idyllic
Montpellier - okay-ish probably would only visit again
Barcelona (gothic quarter) - amazing would 10/10 live again

Oh look seems like I’m not the common denominator only that I’ve pissed you off because I think (like many others on here) Barnsley and Rotherham are a bit shit.

I currently live in Sheffield you don’t see me up in arms foaming at the mouth of the negative comments it’s received, cos whadda ya know others people’s opinions don’t invalidate mine nor do they mean mine are factual for me and evidently helpful for the OP.

SaskiaRembrandt · 07/07/2020 13:07

@Ukholidaysaregreat

Spanieleyes wot a cheek. 😂😂 East Sheffield has plenty of hidden gems. And house prices much better. Research high school catchments carefully if that applies to you OP.
This is true! If you don't have a very big budget look at the east of the city. We lived there when we first moved here, and it was really nice, very rural but with shops. The only reason we moved was because I wanted to be closer to work, and also to be able to go out in the city centre at night without paying eye watering taxi fares.

We live in the west of the city now, and it is lovely, but expensive.
