Moving to South Yorkshire...recommendations needed!

Posted on another board but reposting here due to traffic

Due to job circumstances, I will be looking to move to South Yorkshire in the near future but dont know where to start!
I'm from Leicestershire originally which I find not a very friendly place (where I was anyway), and now based near Leeds. I love the North compared to the Midlands but I've lived near very grey cities in build up areas and just want to live somewhere with a more village type lifestyle with little independent shops etc.

My job will be based near Sheffield but I've been looking at Chesterfield, Barnsley, Wakefield and the surrounding areas too. Does anyone have any suggestions from their experience of South Yorkshire of where would be nice?

@Tartan333 speaks the truth and offers good advice. In my opinion Blush

WaltzingBetty · 07/07/2020 09:19

There’s no way you’ve lived in every area of both Rotherham and Barnsley as to be able to not label them shitholes, or are you telling me you have?
Your logic is faulty @atomicblonde30

You'd need to live in all parts to universally say they're all terrible, but only need to live in one or two nice spots to demonstrate that there are nice exceptions which is what @Witchofzog is clearly saying.

And she's right - there are nice pockets within the Rotherham and Barnsley areas (and I say that as someone who has lived in many different places in the UK). You clearly don't know them as well as you think you do.

Bbang · 07/07/2020 09:19

As @NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace said come join us in Meersbrook! It’s lovely here, otherwise known as the Lentil Belt 😂

Tartan333 · 07/07/2020 09:24

Thank you @nicelegsBlush

Witchofzog · 07/07/2020 09:25

@atomicblonde30 How did I censor you? I disagreed with you (as others also have) And I wasn't the one making sweeping statements. I haven't lived in all the areas either but I have lived in a fair few since the early noughties. Most were great. One, a so called deprived mining village was lovely and welcoming with beautiful countryside and fantastic community spirit. One supposedly nice area left me cold but was still perfectly fine. But I am able to say there are some good and some bad areas for both which is fair and measured. Your blanket "Don't go there - it's awful!" statement isn't. Oh and I have also worked as an HCP in the community in both areas too so a very similar experience to yours.

The only difference here is I’m not as arrogant to discount someone else’s lived experience in favour of my own for no good reason.

So because we think there are objectively nice parts (good schools, low crime rates, strong community) to a large area that you've written off as a 'shithole' we're 'discounting your lived experience' Because you've only lived in bad parts you get to judge all of it?

If we're being objective then what is it exactly about South Anston, Thorpe Hensley and Whiston that make them 'shitholes' in your 'lived experience' @atomicblonde30 ?

DilemmaADay · 07/07/2020 09:42

Dont fall out @Witchofzog and @atomicblonde30, you've both offered me some great insights :) my in laws are from Royston, Barnsley and said they wouldnt live anywhere else and they love it.

A few recommendations for Meersbrook! I love the hippy vibe and it sounds like my kind if scene. Likewise for all the peak district outside areas.

I once had a job in my early 20s where I travelled through Manor Top in Sheffield so that's my only experience of the area, so all your opinions are helping loads

you need to chill and stop taking life so seriously. It’ll be a lot more fun when you stop making everything so seriously and maudlin.

they are absolutely bleak, depressing shitholes

Just leaving this here so the hypocrisy is clear....

Blooming heck OP! If that's your experience then literally the only way is up! Grin

Heavenights · 07/07/2020 09:50

I've read replies on here - I wouldn't rule Crookes out if I'm honest.

There is a lot of students on there but there is a hippy vibe on there.

Same with nether Edge as well.

Meersbrook is okay but Heeley has had some shootings on there last week.

Giraffe888 · 07/07/2020 09:51

I’m from Barnsley but live in Sheffield.

Barnsley has got nice areas! Cawthorne, Darton, Barugh green

For your budget in Sheffield you’d get good amount for your money in Deepcar which Is lovely and as someone mentioned there’s the new fox valley

Penistone/Oxspring are also really nice

JacobReesMogadishu · 07/07/2020 09:52

I used to work in Sheffield and the traffic can be awful. Whereabouts is your new job located? Because you're looking at places south and north of sheffield. I'd stick to whichever side is near your job. The M1 can be bad, junctions getting on/off the M1 can be awful. I could spend an hour driving through Sheffield, most of which was stuck in a traffic jam waiting to get on to the M1.

Feellikedancingyeah · 07/07/2020 09:54

Bear in mind the winters in the peak District! Lovely but harsh in winter

Feellikedancingyeah · 07/07/2020 09:55

Crosspool /Crookes/Lodge Moor / Walkely all good

atomicblonde30 · 07/07/2020 09:55

@WaltzingBetty calm down Braveheart, you don’t need to defend Barnsley and Rotherham at all costs . .

As written above I’m sure @DilemmaADay Can make up her own mind based on the opinions everyone has given her on this thread.

atomicblonde30 · 07/07/2020 09:59

Meersbrook is amazing! @DilemmaADay a real eclectic hippy vibe, very laidback and good for families has three fab schools. Woodseats also lovely and just up the road from Meersbrook, for further afield Crookes as mentioned is nice.

IAintentDead · 07/07/2020 10:00

Well I hope all this helps.

I'm in Hoyland and I love it because it feels so rural (where I am) and yet so very convenient for Motorways etc.

From the extra information you have given I would say look at an area including Grenoside, and out from there to Penistone. Bits of Barnsley to the West of the M1 or just to the East of it. That will give you easy access to Sheffield centre and to Barnsley and Wakefield.

Penistone grammar is an excellent school so that would be a very serious consideration for me

I absolutely agree with this. Massively oversubscribed I hear too. Time was us lowly folk from HD8 had a chance of getting in. Now you need to live in the new development at Grammar School Gardens!

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 07/07/2020 10:16

Meersbrook is okay but Heeley has had some shootings on there last week.

It did, admitted. But this was in and around the Arbourthorne area and was focused within a small group of people. Let's keep things in context. You are extremely unlikely to encounter random gun crime while you're going about your business in Sheffield.

I've lived in Heeley for 27 years and it's been, and still is, bloody amazing Smile
