My mum died back in 2015. After her death we learned so much about her including accepting we had a abusive childhood. So to access the records we could file caps hopefully

Potentially. I know you're allowed to access court documents if the case relates to you (like children of custody battles can access them when they grow up). I think it would only be things that are relevant to you though.

Or older cases.

Was Social Services involved with you at all? If so then they should have a file on you, which might fill in some details, and you can apply for info in that.

Medical records generally no.

You can access her medical records if you were her executor or personal representative. Here's how to do it if you're in England. www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/nhs-services-and-treatments/can-i-access-the-medical-records-health-records-of-someone-who-has-died/

It's mainly criminal records that would be useful including custody. We have reason to believe she was sent to prison and want to know why. I'm in Scotland.

There might be newspaper reports of any trial.

Do you have any idea as to dates?

Criminal records, I'm not so sure.

TARSCOUT · 05/07/2020 19:50

Can't find anything on CR. You can check archives from the Scotsman etc, if you have a date you can check local paper archives etc.

www.scotcourts.gov.uk/
You could try here too.

Just incase some else is searching
You can't access someone's criminal records unless it's about you.
It's pretty much a blanket no about medical records.
