Neighbours noise

Nearly every morning normally 7am my neighbour uses their treadmill in their garage. The garage is joined to ours. Our houses are about 3 meters from the garage. I'm getting fed up waking up to their pounding. It goes on for an hour or so. AIBU to be annoyed by this?

My son has suggested we let off a stink bomb in our garage which will waft over to theirs 🤪

Have you spoken to them? They might not realise you can hear.

GrannyBags · 04/07/2020 10:04

But I think noise abatement laws only go till 7am anyway so they maybe think it’s ok.

loopykay · 04/07/2020 10:08

Unfortunately they aren't the most approachable people.

I can see why that would annoy you but not sure there is much you can do.

All I can think of is to ask him if the treadmill is near your wall and could he move it to be next to the opposite wall.

bestbrowsintown · 04/07/2020 10:11

I don't think using a treadmill in their garage at 7am is unreasonable tbh.

Femaleassassin · 04/07/2020 10:12

I would say something, that's massively unreasonable

Lightsareon · 04/07/2020 10:15

My neighbours are still partying at 7am, you don't know how lucky you are OP!

stophuggingme · 04/07/2020 10:18

Of course that’s annoying and unreasonable
It would drive me mad too.

Have you asked them to move it? Perhaps record it and then show them?

I suspect they already know though as people like this tend not to give a fuck and carry on regardless

KingOfDogShite · 04/07/2020 10:22

We had a treadmill in our garage and it was incredibly noisy when it was just on the concrete floor. We solved the issue completely by putting it on some carpet off cuts.

romeolovedjulliet · 04/07/2020 10:33

i'm with your son op that'll show 'em ! Grin

dameofdilemma · 04/07/2020 10:39

I feel your pain....neighbours six year old has taken to doing some sort of obstacle course from 6am involving jumping on and off beds...

We get on with our neighbours and they’re otherwise great so am sucking it up but starting to get headaches all the time...

Say something if you’ve nothing to lose.

pictish · 04/07/2020 11:00

Given that it’s in the garage and not in an adjoining room or anything like that, they will assume it’s not disturbing you. I actually think what they’re doing is fundamentally ok as people often exercise first thing in the morning. They won’t know it’s bothering you. I would engineer a chat.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 04/07/2020 11:03

I’d just mention it and ask whether they could put the treadmill on a rug to reduce the noise

pictish · 04/07/2020 11:16

Yep...just ask them if they can get a bit of old carpet or something to pop it on.

birthdaybelle · 04/07/2020 11:30

I once had an incredibly angry neighbour come over to tell me about something I'd been doing that was too noisy. She completely lost her shit over it and said "I've held my tongue for this long but I can't take it anymore!!!!"

It had been annoying her for 7 months. I was totally oblivious.

Literally no prizes for not saying anything. Maybe they'll just stop 😕

namechanging2020 · 04/07/2020 11:33

They are entitled to work out at 7am in their property. They aren't making unreasonable noise at an unreasonable time. If you can't approach them and have a friendly chat then you have no other option than to suck it up.

WhySoSexist · 04/07/2020 14:34

A few years ago, I had a neighbour come over a scream at me about my dogs howling all night. She ranted for a good ten minutes about how selfish I was and how I need to get them under control and that they'd been like it for months and her children can't sleep etc etc etc.
I then informed her that I'd only lived there for two weeks and didn't have a dog - I'd heard the dogs she was referring to but they weren't mine. Turns out she's actually a really great person and we get on. I guess she just needs her sleep.
My point, although a bit off, is that you won't gain anything by sitting in your house being angry. It's unlikely that they know they're annoying you so just say something about it.

KatherineJaneway · 04/07/2020 14:36

Doubt she knows it annoys you. I'd assume you couldn't hear me in the garage.

loopykay · 04/07/2020 22:44

I would like to think he would think about how much noise he's making so early, I know I do. He moved in last November with his wife and 2 boys. They haven't reciprocated our friendliness. They would rather ignore us. I've given up now.

Do the stink bomb 😂 and do it for all of us with annoying noisy neighbours! Do it with pride!

pictish · 04/07/2020 22:54

Pop a note through.

Hi - hope you don’t mind me saying but the noise of running on your treadmill is waking me up in the morning. It might well be due to a hard floor. Is there any chance you can pop a bit of carpet or matting underneath it to muffle the sound? I’d be really grateful to if you did.
Thanks
Loopy

I think that’s ok.
