i get so at them. there is one on a busy road and we have to use it for the school run and today 6 cars went past before someone stopped for us to cross..... isnt it a traffic law that you have to stop at a zibra crossing when someone is on the road???

it really makes my blood boil

they're supposed to stop if someone is ON the crossing I think yes.
not sure if it's law or just highway code though

This happens to me too. I get very about it.
I also thought it was the law to stop.

i'm there with a double buggy and school kids and yet they still drive past - sometimes really fast.

i think i'm going to complain to the council and get them to put a lollipop person there - am i mad???

I have just found this

'If the traffic does not stop, then you can carefully put one foot on the crossing. This means that the right of way is legally yours, and the traffic must stop so that you can cross'.

lovecamping- Good idea to complain i think. If its a primary school a lollipop lady would be a good idea.
The one i cross is to pre-school so i don't think they would use a lollipop lady there.

I am driving a instuctor.

The rule is, you dont have to stop for someone waiting at the zebra crossing but it is courteous to do so. So basically, stop if its safe to do so. To consider who is behind you and how sharply you will need to brake to stop safely. If however, someone steps off the path onto the crossing then you MUST stop.

today's situation was a joke, they were definitely safe to do so and still did not stop ... thats it tomorrow i'm going to step onto the road and see what happens. unfortunately most of the time i'm pushing the buggy

i used to think that tey had to stop if you're waiting, until revising for my theory and finding out that they dont have to stop till you're on the crossing (you'd be damned if im pushing my buggy out till people stop!!!)

although curtosy (why oh why cant i spell today and cant even work out how to spell!!!) woudl be great! but we know most people are ..........................!!!!!!

but would one risk to actually do that...I mena to start crossing with the traffic not stopped............................................................................................. .................................................................................................... .................................................................................................... .................................................................................................... .................................................................................................... .................................................................................................... .................................................................................................... .................................................................................................... .................................................................................................... .................................................................................................... ....................................well..not me...not the way they drive round here....lol....
kinda a stupid rule really isn't it? I mean either it means they have to bloody stop or not....grrr....
I rememebr from driving lessons that my driving instructor told me, that you have to wait for them to have completely crossed, incase they change their mind, etc....

I dont know if this would work, but you could petition for a pelican crossing instead of a zebra. So it would be traffic light controlled, we have one of these outside my dcs school, not that anybody uses it cos its been put in the wrong place!

Yep, they have to go all the way off the road before you can drive on.

Handbrake should be on too when stopped incase you are shunted from behind and pushed onto the crossing.

btw...just to clarify this ...he told me because a driver infront of us started to drive just after the pedestrian left his side of the lane....
not because I was being impatient...
admittedly...don't think I knew about teh handbreak part, lol....learn something everyday!

what you mean those //// ones...doesn't it mean you are not allowed to aprk in that area, which obviosuly doesn't count for just standing...or do you mean those that are across the whole junction...that yellow box thing...that means that part has to be left free at all times...
[hoping I am right here emoticon]

Haychee - I take you up on that! No stopping and no overtaking.

In respect of Zebra crossings, if a pedestrian steps onto the carriageway before the driver is within the limits imposed by the zig-zag markings then the driver MUST give way to the pedestrian. If the vehicles are in a flow, then precendence by the pedestrian is hard to achieve as no one likes to stick their head into the firing line, so to speak!
