AIBU to be shocked that my primary school DS told me that they are not allowed to mention or talk about Black Lives Matter. Apparently teacher said that it is a political issue and therefore against the rules to discuss? They are Year 5. I am angry and shocked.

solidaritea I know what you mean.

The other thing to consider on topical discussions is that classes soon work out which teachers they can get off topic quickly. Certainly by secondary years some students are the master of the derail and are remarkably skilled at asking apparently innocuous or topical questions knowing that if the teacher gets onto their pet subject, or simply likes long irrelevant tangents because they're a 'cool teacher', that they can get out of work and the teacher can't blame them because "but we were talking to you miss/sir".
