Door to door canvassing

Is door to door canvassing allowed at the moment? I'm in Wales so I know the rules are different here but I wouldn't have thought it would be allowed anywhere at the moment.

I've just had someone knock my door trying to get me to switch energy suppliers. He was wearing a visor which was slightly alarming in itself when I opened the door and he didn't step back from the door after he knocked.

I'm normally polite to canvassers. As much as they annoy me they're just trying to do their job but I was quite short with this guy. I said "This is ridiculous. We're in the middle of a pandemic, you shouldn't be going around knocking people's doors" and shut the door on him. Now I'm wondering if I was too harsh and perhaps out of order.

I had someone in a blue high viz and face shield knocking an hour ago, I was on a Teams call when he knocked so I ignored it, he then stuck his head around the window, looked at me and motioned for me to open the door. Had to mute my call while I told him to go away

How rude! Just because you're home doesn't mean you are obliged to answer the door to unsolicited callers. They get on my wick at the best of times.
