I'll start by saying I like my job. The company is great, cool colleagues etc... They me MW for a job that yes it's simple but I could do much more. In fact before I left on ML the idea that I was going to get back to more responsibilities but COVID changed the business (for better) and now they need me for something else (which is fine). I think this would hurt slightly less if I didn't have to reject a job offer for £70k+ but it required relocating and we couldn't do it.

Anywho I'm taking this with philosophy as it's just a means to an end. My current job will help me fund my retraning in clinical psychology.

As much as it's sucky I know I'm fortunate to still have a job given the pandemic.

I'm struggling to understand your OP never kind what the actual issue is. Is English your first language? Sorry.

tobedtoMNandfart · 30/06/2020 08:41

*mind ... woops!

It sounds as though you are content with the status quo, Fressia. I don't see what the AIBU or not is about as you are accepting and will be rewarded later on.

Well done you!

Nonononon · 30/06/2020 08:51

Yes keep being grateful you still have a job. I'm about to lose mine due to covid, I'd love to be able to keep my minimum wage job although I remember feeling pissed off we were so poorly paid for the job we did (care work)

You have a plan so that's good. Ride it out for now and work towards your retraining, its a means to an end after all.

SavoyCabbage · 30/06/2020 08:55

You must have something going for you if you were offered a £70k job.

ShadowMane · 30/06/2020 09:00

So you turned down a 70k job, and are working for min wage?

What is it you do?

RaspberryToupee · 30/06/2020 09:00

I’m struggling to understand how you’re working for MW but were offered a job paying £70K. They are worlds apart. Surely if they need you for something else now, more than your original role, this is the opportunity to enter into salary negotiations?

Fressia123 · 30/06/2020 09:04

I'm in content moderation, but the £70k job was based on my many years of BPO managing experience angling outsourcing teams of 100+ employees).

Yes, eventually I'll move to a hybrid job of content management/moderation/support. In the hierarchy of the company all of those guys are more or less the same level (maybe the content manager is slightly higher up). The difference between me (and the rest of my colleagues) is that I speak 4 languages.

OP posts:
YaYaDingDong · 30/06/2020 09:08

Do you need 4 languages to be able to do your job though? I'm guessing not if no-one else has these skills.
So, admirable though that is, it's irrelevant in this context.

Fressia123 · 30/06/2020 09:09

For that £70k job I had to pass all sort of filters, tests and a panel interview. I was very proud to get it, but unfortunately they decided to move the role to a different location. They didn't let me know until I had the job offer. I thought it was fairly sneaky if them. Anywho, it was a very proud moment for me, which in a way let me to realise that I can retrain if I out my heart into it.

OP posts:
Fedup21 · 30/06/2020 09:09

That’s good that a minimum wage job will fund you to a retraining in clinical psychology.

Starthere · 30/06/2020 09:11

Your situation can't be that bad if you can afford to give up 70k for NMW Confused

Never mind clin psy training.

Have a think about the people who will be your patients if you do become a clinical psychologist.

Nooch · 30/06/2020 09:12

Why do you need to fund your D. Clin Psyc? Training places are funded at band 6 so more than minimum wage. Just curious.

Fressia123 · 30/06/2020 09:12

What I will be doing know is entirely language based yup, but they never hired me because of those langauges. It eventually came clear that that was the best use of my skills.

Their business exploded in LatAm and nobody speaks Spanish nor Portuguese that's where I come in handy.

Raella50 · 30/06/2020 09:12

You are choosing to work a minimum wage job and now feel upset that it’s paying minimum wage. That’s unreasonable, yes. YOIoh have the hoover kf working for 70k+ (which th vast majority of people on minimum wage don’t) but you are choosing not to locate and to put your further studies first. That is a privilege I’m itself to be able to afford to retrain and turn today mrke moneye elsewhere. Give yourself a shake and realise how lucky you are! It sounds as though you have a career track in mind so stop feeling sorry for yourself, get on with it and enjoy the rewards at the end.

Fressia123 · 30/06/2020 09:13

Is the master's that I need funding for. I can't just give up my job and become a FT student I need some sort of income.

OP posts:
GinDrinker00 · 30/06/2020 09:16

YABU. You choose to work for minimum wage... so you can’t now be upset about that?

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/06/2020 09:16

Why couldn’t you take the £70k for a year, save, and then do your masters? If you can turn down £70k for MW your financial situation must be good.

Fressia123 · 30/06/2020 09:17

We're a blended family with 50/50. Relocation is not that easy. We put our family first even if that meant some "financial struggle" for now.

OP posts:
Fressia123 · 30/06/2020 09:18

I have just explained why. It was turning our children's world upside down.

OP posts:
Raella50 · 30/06/2020 09:21

That is your decision. You have made these decisions - lots of people don’t have as many options. Just stop feeling sorry for yourself.

Nooch · 30/06/2020 09:22

If you are really motivated by money Clinical Psychology probably wouldn't be the career for you. You probably aren't as you didn't take the job. Don't get me wrong, you can make decent money in private practice but before you get to that point the path is long. There is a bottle neck of band 7 and 8a jobs in the NHS with not much career progression beyond that. Many get burnt-out in the NHS and leave.

Getting on training courses is another matter with only a 15%success rate. You will also need a lot of relevant experience and you are right, a lot of trainees nowadays have also completed masters.

Good luck though.

gotothecooler · 30/06/2020 09:25

I'm confused. Surely it's not a case of £70k job or MW job? There has to be something in between?

Fressia123 · 30/06/2020 09:27

Yes Nooch I'm fairly aware of all of that. I'm.noy motivated by money. I'm.motovated by my own MH experience, the sense of helping others and a curious and scientific mind.

Even band 7-8 for us would be a significant jump anyways so again not an issue. I'm cer aware of how competitive it usy, but I like s challenge and I'm fairly cobfy in that way. I just need the relevant experience. Which in this case my current job can fund it too. If I struggle to find paid roles I can always volunteer, having the cushion of my current job is priceless in that way.

OP posts:
Disquieted1 · 30/06/2020 09:28

I've never heard of anyone going from minimum wage to a 70K+ job offer before.
You have given hope to millions.
