Anyone successfully not gained weight with Sertraline?

I'm on sertraline for the second time. Last time I gained 2 stone and struggled to loose it.

I want to combat it this time but not sure I'm mentally strong enough.

Is there anyone who is on Sertraline for the second time and have managed to keep weight off?

I didn't realise weight gain was a side effect.. I have been on them for just over a year. I have put on a lot of weight but had put that down to my comfort eating and bad habits. I don't seem to be able to pick myself up and get motivated to do anything about my weight though.

If anything OP, when I was on it I lost weight because I was a lot more relaxed and not binge eating to deal with my stress and anxiety levels.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 29/06/2020 20:29

It doesn't cause weight gain. It can cause increased appetite so the answer is to eat sensibly and exercise I'm afraid! It can cause a decrease in appetite too.

I took up running same time as going on sertraline so assume that helped as I didn't notice any weight gain. Went out 3 times a week for around 20-30 mins at first. Have been through peaks and troughs - sometimes more and sometimes a lot less bit have managed to maintain a consistent habit of going out at least once a week/every 10 days. Never as long as 2 weeks and mostly twice a week. Massively helps my anxiety.

I lost it. But over eating was something I did to relieve depression..

I wasn't on it as long as some others have posted on here, but didn't gain weight as far as I remember. Skin changed initially, I noticed around my jaw/neck area a leathery look and feel, might sound strange but that is what happened. Just adding in as a, I guess you could say, side effects.

This. I've been on it myself, no weight gain at all. OP, you say you aren't 'mentally strong enough' to avoid a gain. Now if you've been prescribed sertraline, I assume you feel like you're at the bottom of a deep well, with no way of climbing out. Remember that the ADs won't magically get you back to the surface, they are simply a rope ladder which you have to climb up yourself. If you feed yourself the healthiest food (which is what your body deserves), you'll be able to get yourself up that ladder much more easily. If you exercise a little more, the ladder becomes even easier to climb.

I had a slight increase in appetite at the start, as I’m a type one diabetic I didn’t change my diet so my weight (well, body fat) remained the same.

Skyeshovercraft · 29/06/2020 21:12

I'm on a 150mg dose for PND and haven't gained weight, I'm actually losing weight as it's helped me manage my anxiety and stress eating/drinking. Still can't sleep though! I do sweat like I'm menopausal all the time

PanicBuyerOfGin · 29/06/2020 21:30

Prior to starting sertraline I lost 1.5 stone in 5 months due to misery and maintained the loss for a few months.

I maintained the loss for a few months after starting it as well but have now regained it all gradually.

I don't blame that on the sertraline but basically feeling better equates to increased appetite!

For me I'd rather be a bit overweight and happy than slim and miserable any day.

Cincoperros · 01/07/2020 00:58

My partner has put on quite a bit of weight since being on sertraline. Maybe 1.5 stone.
But he and I would obviously much rather he had to buy a few new shirts and trousers than feel bad like he did before.
Its worth it!

HeretoThereandBackAgain · 01/07/2020 08:15

Sertraline was awful for me. I gained weight (about a stone), despite not eating differently. Had dreadful diarrhoea and insomnia every night, so was constantly exhausted. I lasted 10 weeks then had to beg for a different medication. Never again.

Foreverlexicon · 01/07/2020 08:17

I’m on 100mg and haven’t gained any weight or noticed a change to my appetite

tinydancer88 · 01/07/2020 08:19

I lost weight because I felt more motivated and able to exercise once I wasn't so anxious all I felt like doing was hiding under the duvet!

Headspinner2020 · 01/07/2020 12:06

Thanks for all your messages. I put on weight last time as I remember having a huge increase in appetite, so much so that food was constantly on my mind and I craved carbs and sugar!!! I never had weight issues pre sertraline.

I'm nearly a week into sertraline (for the second time in my life). I'm on 50mg to start. I'm feeling exhausted all the time but appetite the same atm.

I know the key is to eat less (or healthy) and move more. But obviously, if those cravings come back it will be a huge challenge as I remember it being an over powering hunger and craving.
