To have had one small glass of champagne last night (26w pregnant)

Basically, what I'm trying to establish is how many mums can actually say they didn't have a sip of alcohol during their entire pregnancy?

Last night I celebrated a friend's birthday with a very small glass of champagne, just less than half of a standard size champagne flute. This was my first drink since a couple of weeks before I conceived, aside from a few very occasional sips of other people's drinks here and there (e.g. tasting a cocktail DH made a few weeks ago with a small sip). I have no particular plans to drink again whilst pregnant, but I won't rule out another small drink at some point before I give birth if I fancy it.

I'm pretty comfortable with my decision, but am just wondering whether in reality most mothers engage in the occasional drink in pregnancy or stay strictly tee total?

OP posts:
Rubbleonthedouble1 · 28/06/2020 18:23

Never had a sip throughout any of my pregnancies x

namechanging2020 · 28/06/2020 18:53

I am on baby 4 and had the odd drink with all of them. They all seem fine. Also accidentally smoked with the first baby before I knew too.

IdblowJonSnow · 28/06/2020 18:59

Don't be daft OP. Nothing wrong with a small drink in pregnancy occasionally.
Hope you enjoyed it.

CluelessBaker · 28/06/2020 18:59

Most of the mums I know had the odd small alcoholic drink once they were out of the first trimester. There is no good evidence that a small amount of alcohol now and then is harmful.

I personally haven’t yet (16 weeks) because pregnancy sickness makes me feel unable to stomach it but if I could I wouldn’t be concerned about a half glass of champagne.

The ‘I would never risk it’ group aren’t looking at the actual risk, which is tiny and much smaller than many other things I expect they did during pregnancy (such as travelling by car or gardening), they’re just moralising out of a misplaced sense of superiority. Competitive pregnancy is a very real phenomenon.

2020StepAwayFromTheCake · 28/06/2020 19:10

Not a single drop. Each to their own but I didn’t want to risk anything with my baby he was so precious.

updownleftrightstart · 28/06/2020 19:28

The "I wouldn't risk it, my baby is too precious" comments are hugely annoying and insulting. It's suggesting those who had a tiny drink don't care enough or don't love their children as much as those who had no alcohol at all. When in actual fact those who have had a small drink may have just done enough research to know there is no risk at all with the tiny sort of amount OP is talking about.

LaurieMarlow · 28/06/2020 19:38

I didn’t want to risk anything with my baby he was so precious.

I’ll ask you too, did you get in a car?

Perhaps you’re another of these mums claiming to have avoided cars for nine months. Wink

coffeeforone · 28/06/2020 19:44

YANBU. I hope you enjoyed it! I did the same in both pregnancies. I don't believe there are any risks in having the occasional small glass.

Montsti · 28/06/2020 19:45

I had a small glass of champagne here and there with all 4 of my pregnancies. My obstetrician said it was absolutely fine. I didn’t drink in the 1st trimester with any of them (I found out at 4-5 weeks with each one) but post 14 weeks if there was a special occasion then I had one glass of champagne...

Lockdowners · 28/06/2020 19:48

No evidence that very light drinking causes any harm.

Jellybeansincognito · 28/06/2020 19:52

There’s no evidence that it doesn’t though either
@Lockdowners

Which is why the guidance was changed to none.

NoWordForFluffy · 28/06/2020 20:08

Which is why the guidance was changed to none.

Nope, that was because they didn't trust women to understand what the previous limit was.

GreenLeafTurnip · 28/06/2020 20:11

I didn't but I lived on salt and vinegar Pringles and cheese sandwich for the first 18 weeks so I'm not sure that's any better than a small glass of wine here and there!

anotherwayout · 28/06/2020 20:12

@Jellybeansincognito
There’s similarly no evidence that exercise is not harmful, or watching tv, or eating McDonalds, or chocolate, or taking paracetamol or absolutely anything really because how can you prove the absence of risk? Until there is some sort of evidence that something may cause harm what possible reason is there to exclude it completely?

passthemustard · 28/06/2020 20:13

@bluemoon2468

When I was pregnant with my first baby 19 years ago the NHS advice was 'one or two glasses of wine once or twice a week'

I literally drank this through my entire pregnancy. She is absolutely fine. Waiting for A level results - predicted A*s

I'm now pregnant with my 5th and I am no way drinking alcohol like I did all those years ago but I will have a small glass occasionally. I have in all my pregnancies and my kids are fine. Better than fine.

I would have had a whole glass of champagne if I was you though....

wlv12 · 28/06/2020 20:14

I’ve been pregnant 3 times and haven’t drank in any of them, I just would have worried and not enjoyed it so seemed pointless.

Almostfifty · 28/06/2020 20:21

I helped a pal out with his pub when I was pregnant. There was a woman that came in every night (apparently, I only did the odd night) with her partner, who had about four pints every night. She was the same number of weeks as I was. I never touched a drop throughout all four of my pregnancies.

I remember telling our midwife about her, and she said she thought she'd done the same through all three of her pregnancies. This was long, long ago, before midwives would never mention another person.

We both had perfect babies. I think it was luck on her part, but I'll never know.

OP, one small glass of something lovely once in a while will not hurt your baby. I hope you enjoyed every drop.

1stmonkey · 28/06/2020 20:37

For the first two weeks (before i knew) i had two hen do's and a birthday and drank more than i can ever remember doing before. Once the morning sickness started i couldn't even stand the smell. Then after about 4 months i had a small glass of red every friday evening to celebrate having survived another week with a 3 hour commute everyday. Some thought i was evil but soon learned to mind their own business.

C1u4toff · 28/06/2020 20:44

I had two glasses of champagne on my wedding day at 32 weeks pregnant. I would never have drank regularly but if it was a special occasion I may have a small glass of wine.

lesleyw1953 · 28/06/2020 20:45

FAS isn't always related to the amount of alcohol consumed. We were taught that there is no such thing as a safe amount. Why take the risk?

Napqueen1234 · 28/06/2020 20:47

Absolutely fine. Ignore the self righteous I never did a single thing out of line blah blah. It’s found to be completely safe.

rhowton · 28/06/2020 20:56

My pregnancy craving was frozen raspberry rum cocktails. I had one at the end of each trimester. There is absolutely no evidence o suggest drinking rarely and in small quantities impacts baby at all. A bottle a night, another story. A small glass of wine every month, no problem

TheoneandObi · 28/06/2020 20:57

I was one of those who got horribly drunk before realising I was pregnant 25 years ago. Poor tiny (unplanned) foetus must have been hit hard. He's ok though, a beautiful 24 year old man with a degree from Cambridge and a wife. So he's turned out ok. I'm obv not advocating deliberately pickling your baby, but having had such a tiny drink please don't worry. Worrying could do more harm than the drink!
I must hasten too that once the pregnancy was confirmed I miraculously lost any desire to drink. Ditto with baby number two.

BetteDavisWeLuvU · 28/06/2020 21:03

Not a drop, can't see the point at all....i’m very much all or nothing though, can't see the point in having half a glass, neither here nor there is it. If it had been a wedding I might have done for the toast but not for a birthday.

BetteDavisWeLuvU · 28/06/2020 21:04

@TheoneandObi soo many people do this until the placenta takes over at 12 weeks they're not going to be exposed to it really. It's getting pissed post 12 weeks that’s the issue.
