Stolen iPad - anything I can do

annie987 · 27/06/2020 22:25

I stupidly left my son’s iPad on the backseat of the car at the hospital. When I got back I noticed I hadn’t shut the windows properly and predictably the iPad had gone.
I have used find my iphone and no location is showing. I’ve put it in lost mode remotely but it won’t activate unless it is connected to the internet.

It has never been used for banking, the email address connected to it is one that my son only used for PlayStation network stuff.
There were a few random photos on it but not much.

We’re fairly safe aren’t we / there is nothing they can really use it for fraud wise is there? I guess there is a payment card set up to his Apple ID.
Is there anything I can do to remove it?
Thanks

Did you have a passcode set up on the iPad? If so there’ll be no way anyone can access anything.

As for the Apple ID, can you log in to it via Apple’s website and change all of your details on there?

Did you mark it as lost in your apple account? That will disable it if it connectes to the internet.

Yes have marked it as lost. Ooh yes - it had a passcode on it so that reassured me a bit.
It was a crappy old iPad mini 2 - it’s v old.

Was there a passcode or not? Was it secure or easily guessable?

The thief may be able to use the card linked to the Apple ID unfortunately, if they can guess the passcode or if there wasn’t a passcode. However they would need internet access, and you can set iCloud/find my up to erase the device once the iPad connects to the internet to thwart that.

Would probably be safest to cancel that card & get a new one.

For your insurance company you probably need to report this to police via 101. There may be cctv. The police will probably not investigate - but stealing things from hospital staff/visitors is extra scummy, so you never know.

Might be worth investing into cameras for your car. My dash cam is motion activated and would have caught the perp.

If it’s a cellular iPad call your network as hey can blacklist it

The passcode wasn’t easily guessable.
I’ve marked it as lost. I didn’t set to erase it. Is that the best thing to do?

Erase as you’re not getting it back. It’s not like you accidentally left it somewhere, someone stole it.

annie987 · 27/06/2020 22:44

That’s true. Thank you

Sorry to hear that.

DDs ipad got stolen a few years back (we thought), police came to the house to investigate! Replaced on insurance (paid £50 excess) Found several years later wedged inside IKEA daybed, slightly warped 😳 . Only discovered taking bed apart to sell.
