God I’m probably BU. But bloody hell I've had enough. 14 weeks of working ft, plus trying to fit in twinkl, Oak, Khan etc. Watching my Year 4 get more isolated and sad. Feeing like a loser / outsider when the school send out their weekly newsletter asking Reception to bring in x, y and z and Year 6 to remember their deposit for (insert end of year activity).

Honestly the thought of Monday makes me want to throw things at the wall, and it’s not even Sunday yet! Got a bunch of corrections sent through on last weeks schoolwork which I now have to try and fit in around Skype work calls, deadlines, appraisals. Anyone else just about had it? So tempted to tell child to not worry about it too much and have some screen time.

I don’t need help with coping or with mood or anything like that. I just need to not have two full time jobs.

tomorrow’s another day

Imagine comparing getting your legs waxed to the education of children and thinking you are making a valid point on the latter.

CountessFrog · 30/06/2020 00:29

It’s astonishing really that the education of children is seen as some sort of add-on, comparable to say, getting your legs waxed.

echt · 30/06/2020 04:26

likeafishneedsabike was making a comparison about services about accessibility due to government guidelines and the pointlessness of getting into a tizzy about the beautician. This is analogous to those who rail against schools and teachers when it's the government.

It's quite plain, unless you are being deliberately obtuse, Justanotherlurker and CountessFrog.

Oh, hang on........

CountessFrog · 30/06/2020 07:54

I was referring to the government guidelines rather than anyone’s particular attitude. I’m not sure what’s obtuse about that, unless you are deliberately trying to find problems.

Oh hang on

likeafishneedsabike · 30/06/2020 08:45

I also made an analogy about cancer patients not receiving treatment in hospital. But the power of analogy to aid understanding isn’t working here.
So let’s be more direct and literal.
Your children aren’t entitled to be educated because of your career choice or because they were not born between very specific dates. This is the fault of the government and their insane guidelines, which directly control STATE schools. Why are you not fighting for your children’s education? Why are you blaming the schools and allowing the DofE to get away with this? How are you going to justify this to your children in the future? ‘Sorry love, but I just thought your school was a bit crap and didn’t realise that you were being excluded from education by the government department which controlled it’. We need to do better than that as parents.

CountessFrog · 30/06/2020 15:15

Perhaps one of the problems is finding time to campaign, when you’re WFH and the kids are there.

likeafishneedsabike · 30/06/2020 17:17

@CountessFrog maybe that’s how they are getting away with this. Parents are so busy and exhausted by fifteen weeks of running two full time jobs.

Lemons1571 · 30/06/2020 17:41

It’s absolutely ridiculous isn’t it Sad

I think it’s how it’s been allowed to continue. It’s just appalling.

Ps fish/bicycle - did you nick your username from U2 lyrics? One of my favourite songs!

likeafishneedsabike · 30/06/2020 19:23

Yes @CountessFrog but the proper lyric was already taken by another user! We are probably showing our age now.

CountessFrog · 30/06/2020 19:33

We have to stick together in our advancing years 😂

Theforest · 30/06/2020 19:39

It really is tempting, but we are going to stick to it. Just over 2 weeks left wow!
My year 8 had a secret wobble during May, so I want to keep him on track. Year 4 is missing friends, but thank goodness for the xbox communication!!

PablosHoney · 30/06/2020 19:39

I don’t want to read all 12 pages OP but just wanted to say I take my hat off to you and anyone trying to work from home and home school, my kids are year 2, year 6 and year 8 and that has been hard enough but I go out to work and it’s easier as I’m a Keyworker so the youngest goes to school. Give yourself a break, finish early for your child’s sake too.

PablosHoney · 30/06/2020 19:57

I spent the first 3 months homeschooling and I’m still doing it as I only send him in on the days I’m working but come September it’ll be 6 months out of school for my year 8, they have been let down and the stupid messages from the schools about how well the kids that have been allowed back are doing, fuck off with that. In September it’s got to be full time for all or part time for all

Lemons1571 · 30/06/2020 20:48

I also feel for the previous poster who saw the sahm dropping the kids at school and heading off for a days exercise and relaxation, courtesy of a keyworker DH. While the poster and her DH both faced a full day of wfh while having no choice but to ignore their child. From June 1st it’s all gone so wrong.

PablosHoney · 30/06/2020 20:51

That’s awful, I sat with my rota and applied to the school for the days I have to work and those alone, anything else would be unfair. My husband has worked throughout lockdown otherwise I’d leave DS with him

Davincitoad · 30/06/2020 20:58

Depends if you are expecting another mummy (teacher) to give up their summer and probably life for the next few years to deal
With it

Lemons1571 · 30/06/2020 21:10

@PablosHoney are you both key workers? That makes sense, and still makes sense now. Wouldn’t begrudge anyone that, as long as they are actually key workers and not trying to pull a fast one.

That’s the other thing I don’t understand, a couple where only one is a key worker, and why their kids might be higher up the pecking order for a place? How is that different to 2 non key workers both ft wfh?

OP posts:
Lemons1571 · 30/06/2020 21:11

@Davincitoad yes, I would expect the school to plan to redress the balance.

caringcarer · 30/06/2020 23:12

@Parker231, I am a foster carer so my job is doing my best for foster son. I am also s qualified secondary teacher who retired from teaching very early. For me teaching foster son is not hard and he enjoys learning. We do English, Science, PE - either a 2 mile runs of 1 hour 1-1 cricket lesson every day, Maths and History every other day along with reading, cooking and Geography once a week.

I know it must be harder if both parents are wfh or single parent.

CountessFrog · 30/06/2020 23:49

Or indeed if they are not teachers.

Lemons1571 · 01/07/2020 08:38

It’s impossible. I can’t deliver the subject in a way he understands. I have no idea about the SPAG English they do for SATS. I work 9am-6pm Mon-Fri so any schoolwork has to be done outside of that time.

I am scared that “it will all be sorted out in September” really means “we will carry on with what the kids in school have covered and assume you’ve done all the home learning and if not well, unlucky“.

We would certainly not be in the minds eye of the school when they come to allocating extra tutoring.

I’m going to shout louder I think.

PablosHoney · 01/07/2020 19:54

No but he is a head green keeper and can’t work from home.

PablosHoney · 01/07/2020 19:56

Another mummy 🤮🤮🤮 Oh yes as it’s definitely going to be binning off the last two weeks of term that does the damage here and not the 100 days they have been out of school already

Parker231 · 01/07/2020 20:00

Schools should have given spaces where both parents (or single parent) are working full time from home. These children have seriously missed out in their education over the last three months.
