Ant infestation - help please!!

I have been reading old posts but thought that a new product may have come out by now!

Has anyone any tips on how to get rid of the blasted things in the house? I know we need to find the nest - how? The anti bait things - how many would we need?

My skin is crawling writing this! Is it worth getting a pest control company in or are they mega bucks?

You don't have to find the nest. Just put an ant bait station down along the ant's route in your home, and leave then to take the poison back to the nest. Don't kill them when they appear. Let them take it back. One worked for me, but I think they may come in packs of two. Try one first and see how it goes.

This is brilliant. Just put a tiny bit down-lots of ants will flock and then the next they, they’ll all be gone!

I also made sure anything that might attract them, sugar, for example was kept in Tupperware containers or the fridge/freezer. No idea where the nest was or where they were getting in but I haven't seen them since.

I've just used some ant powder in a line across the doorstep as they were coming in through the front door. Worked a treat

These are excellent. Get a few and put one in each corner of the room, then put one outside the doors, too. They just disappear. My mum had them in her cupboards and on the counters in the kitchen - there were loads of them. After an hour or so of putting these down, there wasn't one to be seen.

Just to say when you’ve got rid of the infestation if you want a natural alternative to keeping them at bay. Put some Peppermint oil on some cotton wool and put it in the corners of wherever they have found a way in. (Obviously block up any holes you find beforehand). The peppermint makes it very difficult to find their way back along the scent trail they were using. We found one poor ant going round in circles all night because he couldn’t find his way out again so it definitely works!

Agree with everyone else. Ants aren’t an insect that ‘infest’ they tend to march through the house or march in and out again if there’s a good source. You just have to block their march route. They’re very cool creatures.

I agree ants are cool, I actually like watching them. They are so busy and proactive!

We had a terrible infestation in my student house (I know, right? Fancy that...). Anyway we bought the Nippon stuff my mum used but it didn’t touch the sides. In the end I bought insect killer spray you weren’t supposed to use in the kitchen, and used it in the kitchen. All around the skirting boards with all food well out of the way. For three days every morning it looked like we had spilt tea leaves all over the floor. Fourth day, done and dusted...

Talc works - ants hate it and refuse to cross - also safe for pets and children. I sprinkled it thickly along the door step and the ants went away.

Home Defence ant bait station. I used to have loads of the little fuckers marching up my kitchen worktops from a gap under the back door, these stations really did the trick. Since I've had my patio redone I've not has an issue... touch wood!

I find that Antstop spray, if you use it early enough will stop the little buggers coming in your house. Spray it all round your external door frames and window frames in April/May and they don't bother you all summer. It dries within a few minutes so shouldn't bother pets etc.

We used to put a little pile of sweets away from our home. They stopped coming in our home then. I don't like the thought of killing them.

Yes yes yes to the ant bait station. But a couple and position then wherever you see movement.

The Nippon powder says safe for pets. I've been a lot more inclined to believe that since watching a blackbird (with a distinctive tail feather) eating hundreds of dead ants on our patio and in our conservatory after I'd used it - it was back again the next day, so it had obviously done it no harm!

I’ve just ordered some deathlac after this thread inspired me to do more research - says it’s safe once it dries.

Look all around your skirting boards etc, there will be like earth or shavings where the nest is.
I have cats so didnt want to use bait stations etc so when I find one I use clear silicon and seal it up. First year in our house we wer overrun, now it's rare we see them in the house
